He told me it had been written by Nicho- las Hendra who was living near London, Ontario, Canada. I had to find out more. For sale and wanted adverts for July can be sent to the editor via email to In 1841 Nicholas Hendra was living at Bealsmill with his parents and seven siblings. [email protected] or post them to:- His father, also Nicholas, was the miller. He had been baptised at Church in 1821. An acquaintance in Canada found the burials of Nicholas and his Jo Burt, Trehane, Trekenner, PL15 9PH with your name and contact details mother and father in London Grove Cemetery. Presumably the family had emigrat- ed together. Nicholas junior was only 30 years old when he died. The family had inside and we will try and include them in the newsletter. Next I found that in 1841 Urania was living in Rezare with her brother John, a No charge for “Free to good home” adverts. Don’t forget our farmer, and his family. Their father had died. What a coincidence! They were living next awards e.g. honours from the Queen. door.

By this time I had received a copy of the letter from Nicholas to Urania and my in- terest was renewed. The letter had actually been found in Launceston! Nicholas called her ‘my dear’ and said that ‘she was seldom out of his mind’. He seemed to have been preaching in Canada and said ‘he could get up to 7s 6d per day’ and could ’better maintain a wife and six children here than a wife at home’. He contin- ues ‘please to tell me how you are getting on at the chapel where the work of the lord is reviving among you’. Presumably this was the old chapel in Rezare and Nicholas was a local preacher rather than a curate. I could not find a record of Urania in 1851 (although I found members of her family in Rezare) and was unable to trace her marriage for some time. Did she marry Nich- olas? Perhaps it was unlikely. In fact she married John Pooley, a miller, in 1849. He was born at Ruse’s Mill where his father was the miller but by 1833 the family had moved to Landue Mill (recorded at that time as Pennington’s Mill). Urania and John were married in Copthorne Wesleyan Chapel, North Petherwin. I wonder why as their families were still in Lezant? In 1851 Urania and John were living in Landue Mill and in 1861 at Bamham Hill, Bulworthy. John died at Town Mills, St. Thomas in 1870. He was only 48 years old. In 1871 and 1881 Urania was back in Rezare living with her maiden Aunt Urania. In 1891 Urania was living alone at Beal’s Cottage, Cartha Martha. Her aunt had died. Urania Pooley died in Launceston Union Workhouse in 1898 and was buried in Lezant Churchyard. How sad! During their married life, Urania and John had had a servant living with them. I have not found any records of children of Urania and John so perhaps she had no family to look after her and money had run out. This Urania is niece of Urania Pooley. Gravestone in Lezant churchyard reads:

Sacred to the memory of Mary the wife of John Hocken of this parish who died Nov 4th 1863 aged 54 yrs also Urania daughter of the above who died May 28 1844 aged 4 yrs also Mary daughter of the above and wife of William Taylor Uglow also John son of John and Mary Hockin Feb 10 aged 24 yrs 4 33

N.H.B

It’s the end of an era. After a period of 42 years, Neil Burden is no longer our local

Cornwall Councillor. His diligence and dedication to the people he has represented should not go unrecognized.

As soon as Neil qualified, at the age of 21, he became a Lezant Parish Councillor, a role in which he continues today. Later he served both as a District Councillor and then, after unitarisation, a Cornwall Coucnillor. Throughout he has been approachable and personable, so enabling all constituents of his ward easy access to his political wisdom.

One of Neil’s notable campaigns was to fight against the closure of our local Laun- ceston Hospital, by convincing the authorities that people should be prioritized over finances. Social Welfare and health have been his great passions throughout his political career.

Being a farmer, Neil has always had an interest in wildlife and the environment, so it was only natural that he has been Chairman of the Tamar Valley Area of Natural Beauty Partnership, since its inception. His concerns extended to the organization's employees’ welfare, as witnessed by the tributes from past officers. This gem, right on our doorstep, has just been successful, under Neil’s guidance, in gaining heritage funding to the tune of £3.2 million to promote and educate within the Tamar Val- ley.

Although Neil will not be our ward member on the Cornwall Council anymore his many other attributes, such as flower arranging, thespian, local historian, preacher, to name but a few, will sustain him in this next episode of his life’s journey. One thing is certain, Neil will still be championing causes and active in our community for many years to come.

Methodist Prayer Cycle On Saturday 22nd May, Andi and I left our home and commenced our prayer cycle around the Launceston Area Methodist Circuit so we could pray for our chapels and the communities in which they serve. This was a ride that was scheduled to take place in January but due to restrictions was postponed. We were very blessed to have good weather, particularly when Friday and Sunday were not suitable conditions to cycle in. We reached St Paul’s at Upton Cross first and then cycled on to Lewannick, where they have just opened their new Café Central. We cycled on from there to Wesley Cottage and by then the sun was starting to come out. was our next stop where we were met by Revd. Doreen and several mem- bers. We prayed together and blessed a shrub that had been planted in memory of Ow- en Withers. From here it was a race between Revd. Doreen and ourselves to Pipers Pool! We arrived first, taking the small back lanes. Some of the other members joined us and then we were on to Boyton. When we arrived at Boyton Revd. David and Liz were inside with the doors open. Revd. David was playing the organ, which was lovely to hear. We prayed together before all of us departed to where we were met by a cou- ple of Coads Green chapel members who were out that way. From here we travelled to Lifton and had a very warm welcome by Revd. Cathy and several members who joined us out in the sun to pray together. Checking the time, we needed to get going and make our way to Central arriving exactly on time to join in prayers with Revd. David and sever- al members. From here we travelled to the Bridge and then on to Tregadillett, Revd. David meeting us at both churches. We were now on the homeward stretch and so we travelled to South Petherwin where members were waiting for us in the chapel grounds. From here we went to Trebullett where a number of members welcomed us with a round of applause and ice-cream! This only meant one more chapel to cycle to – Coads Green! We arrived around 15 minutes later than scheduled, to another round of ap- plause by several members who were gathered there, as well as a homemade “well done” poster and bunting that had been put up. All those we met were given little an- gels as we prayed for the “army of angels to protect us all as we serve God in the places he has put us.” Over all we travelled just over 55 miles…but this was on an e-bike! We were very grateful to all those who turned out and for their prayers and the warm welcome they gave us. So far, we have managed to raise just over £2,500 for the cir- cuit, so a huge thank you to everyone who contributed. May the Lord bless you and keep you, may He make His face to shine upon you and give you peace.

God bless, Jo & Andi Smart

The Gardening Gang…

Summer has arrived and things are looking fabulous out there. Happy Summertime!

Let’s chat all things lupins. We have had successes and disasters over the years, but this year the snails seem to have left us alone – how did yours fare? Did you know that the Egyptians ate lupins (please don’t try this at home for fear that that they might poison you). Also, they were in- troduced by the Romans to improve soil fertility and then, my guessing, is that the Romans brought them to the UK with the plan to improve our soil. I’m sure there is a garden/plant historian amongst us that would know.

It’s really time to start slowing down and enjoying the garden, particularly all the wonderful colours and scents. Don’t forget to still support tall leggy plants as we are not quite out of the woods yet for breezy weather! Deadheading is as im- portant, and I know we all love to admire a bloom for as long as possible, but in most cases regular deadheading will reward you tenfold. Penstemons should be cut back as the flowers fade as well as delphiniums to encourage new and bolder growth.

If you’re a veggie grower, then peppers need to be potted on and the cucumbers need to be trained upwards.

It was with some sadness, but understanding, that we noted the Cornwall Garden Society summer flower show was cancelled ahead of time. However, they are offer- ing a self-drive visit to The Hidden Valley Gardens at Treesmill in the morning and then Tregrehan Garden in the afternoon, on the 13th of July. You can find the book- ing form and information here:

Finally, is it too soon to be discussing bulb planting in the autumn? I can feel a lazy Sunday of catalogue browsing coming on!
