DRESS/BEHAVIOUR FOR RALLIES

IMPORTANT: How would you like to have horse and dog mess and dropped hay left all over your drive or stable yard? This is what has been happening at the venues we use for our training and rallies, many of which belong to members’ parents. A pooper-scooper should always be in your trailer or box so that you can clear up round your trailer or box before you leave the premises. Also you must not ride or drive over grass verges – again your parents would not like that to happen to their lawn. If you do not respect other peoples’ properties we will not be able to use them and will have to pay to use equestrian centres for all our events. Please would you note the following points:

Your instructor will not expect a spotlessly clean pony/horse but they should not have any mud on them and you and the pony/horse should be neatly turned out. A sweatshirt with plain jodhpurs and boots and gloves is fine.

HAIR – hair must be tied back neatly and long hair contained in a hair net – this is not only for tidiness sake but also for safety.

CROSS COUNTRY – long sleeves and body protectors are compulsory for all cross country practices and competitions and remember the new rule regarding skull hats only for cross country riding.

Pony Club Rules State that an effective Body Protector must be worn by competitors in the cross-country phases of Horse Trials and Tetrathlons, cross-country and pony racing events. I would advise you to take a body protector to all Inter-Branch competitions as some Branches are making it a rule that they should be worn in all competitions, i.e. show jumping as well as cross-country. The Pony Club recommends that members purchase a BETA Standard Body Protector when replacing their present one. MEDICAL ARMBANDS are now compulsory for any member, whatever age, taking part in Cross Country Competitions. Dark jodhpurs or breeches may not be worn in competitions. Tack should be in a clean and safe condition; ponies must be properly shod. Please do not bring coughing ponies to any fixture. TEAMS

Competing in a team can be great fun and also adds to your chance of winning a rosette even if you are not placed individually. Please do remember that everybody can be considered for teams even if you are not very experienced. The discipline organisers will advise you if they feel you are not quite ready for a certain standard, but we cannot ask if you would like to be in a team unless we know that you want to be on the list! - so please let us know.

We thought it might help to clarify some of the terms we use about competitions, as for those just starting out it can seem a real muddle. The Pony Club has Levels of competition which are as follows - there are other limits for spreads, speeds etc (all this information can be found at www.pcuk.org or in the relevant handbook :

Nationally the Pony Club is split into Areas, we are Area 13 and our Area Representative is Dawn Taylor.

Each Area holds qualifying competitions in each discipline for Levels 3, 4 and 5, the most successful of these qualify for the Pony Club National Championships. The Novice Intermediate and Open Champs are held in Cheshire where, as you can imagine, the height and technicality of competition will be at its most challenging. When you hear someone saying ‘she’s doing Area’ it means representing her branch in a discipline at a certain level. Our Area also holds a Mini Champs and Southern Novice Champs, to give our younger members a taste of the big competitive atmosphere.

Mounted Games have an Area Competition and usually the 1st 3 teams go to the Zone Finals for another round and only the winners of the Zones go to HOYS or the Pony Club Championships.

There are also the Hickstead Qualifiers, this is another show jumping competition for levels 3, 4 and 5 with the finals for level 5 only at Hickstead.

During the winter there are also the Dengie sponsored Dressage and Show Jumping Competitions for levels 3 & 5 approx, which culminate in Area and then National Finals in the Spring.

Max Show Jumping Max X Country Equivalent BE

LEVEL 1 0.65 m 0.60 m

LEVEL 2 Mini 0.80 m 0.75 m

LEVEL 3 Novice 0.95 m 0.90 m BE 90

LEVEL 4 Intermediate 1.05 m 1.00 m BE 100

LEVEL 5 Open 1.15 m 1.10 m BE Novice

To be selected for a branch team, you must be an active member and have attended 3 rallies and trained with the relevant training group. For most competitions, we try to send as many as possible and give anyone who is keen (and safe) a chance, but for Area we select our very best riders at each level.
