EDUCATION

 Graduated from Medical School of the University of , in 1979.  Qualification at “Red Cross” Hospital in Athens  Got my PhD at the Medical School of the University of Ioannina, grade: “excellent”. Subject: “The Frequency of Pseudoexfoliation in ”. A clinical – epidemiological study in the four prefectures of Epirus (May 1989).  Holder of the European Diploma of Ophthalmology.

WORK EXPERIENCE

1979-1984: Rural service doctor, at “Chatzikosta” hospital in Ioannina, and other rural practices of the area. 1984-1986: Special postgraduate fellowship intern at the University Eye Clinic of Ioannina. 1986: Appointment at the Eye Clinic of the “Red Cross” hospital, in Athens, where I received the title of Qualified Ophthalmologist. February 1990: Lecturer of Ophthalmology at the Medical School of the University of Ioannina. March 1996: Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Medical School of the University of Ioannina. 1999: Tenure in the position of Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Medical School of the University of Ioannina. 2004 – today: Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Medical School of the University of Ioannina.

ACADEMIC WORK

1. During the academic years 1984-1985 and 1985-1986, I participated in training courses for the students of the Medical School of the University of Ioannina as a special graduate fellowship intern, assisting faculty members of the University Eye Clinic, in accordance with Article 3, a 145.3/b3/610/85.

Since my appointment as Lecturer at the University Eye Clinic (1990), until today, I participated regularly in the teaching of ophthalmology to medical students, as well as in their daily four-hour practice at the University Eye Clinic. 3. Taught Ophthalmology to third-year nursing students at the Technological Educational Institute of Ioannina (1989-1991). 4. Conducted series of courses in Ophthalmology at the Nursing School of the Red Cross Hospital in Athens (1986-1989). Participated as a trainer-speaker at the postgraduate courses of the Red Cross Hospital, for resident and attending ophthalmologists. 5. Participate, by elaborating in various subjects, in weekly postgraduate activities of the University Eye Clinic of Ioannina (1988 until today). 6. Participate as a speaker in the weekly “Bibliographical updates” at the University Eye Clinic of Ioannina (1990 until today). 7. Participate in the surgical training of the resident doctors of the University Eye Clinic of Ioannina. 8. Wholly responsible for training and specialization in surgery of the posterior segment. In this specialized subject, I have trained doctors of our clinic and also Heads of Departments of other hospitals in Greece (Athens, Alexandroupolis). 9. Participation as a guest speaker-trainer to postgraduate courses of other specialties at the University Hospital of Ioannina, as well as other hospitals of the area (, Igoumenitsa, ). 10. Conducted series of courses for the nurses in training at the University Hospital of Ioannina. 11. Member of the examination committee for Medical Specialties of Ophthalmology in Ioannina. 12. Participated for many years in the European Union for Medical Specialists (UEMS) for the learning of educational programs. 13. Participated as a guest speaker – trainer at the European Professors of Ophthalmology course (EUPO 2010). 14. Speaker – trainer in twenty international conferences in Greece. 15. Guest speaker in 38 lectures and presentations, in 26 international conferences abroad. 16. I teach Ophthalmology at the University of Ioannina, since 1990. 17. Participated as a specialist in many advisory boards.

DOCTORAL DISSERTATIONS

Completed: six (6) in total – two (2) as a supervisor, and four (4) as a member of a three-person committee.

Ongoing: four (4) in total – three (3) as a supervisor (Exarchopoulos D., Christodoulou E., Vourda E.), and one (1) as a member of a three-person committee (Kanari M.).

FURTHER TRAINING ABROAD

August 1988: London; Moorfields Eye Hospital, Consultant A.D. Steel. June-July 1991: Antwerp; Vitreoretinal Department of Ophthalmology, Middelheim Hospital. Training in retinal pathology and surgery (Director: Dr R. Zijvonovic). April-June 1993: Antwerp; Vitreoretinal Department of Ophthalmology, Middelheim Hospital. Training in retinal pathology and surgery (Director: Dr R. Zijvonovic). October 1996: Sweden; training in new technology of Microsurgery at the anterior segment of the eye. January 1997: Frankfurt; training in the use of new materials during surgery of retinopathies (Prof. C. Eckard). February 1998: Cologne; training in the use of specialized technology in macular Microsurgery (Prof Boeker). October 2000: Cincinnati, USA; guest of Professor Kranias – participation in his clinical and surgical work. April-October 2002: Belgium; training in a specialized center for the treatment of the entire range of eye pathology and surgery, particularly retinal and vitreal. (C. Since then, I arrange regular short visits to these, or similar, centers.  I have attended almost every International Conference in Greece.  I have attended 75 International Conferences abroad.

CLINICAL WORK

Since 1990, I have been an active member of the Eye Clinic of the University of Ioannina, and participate fully in the clinical, surgical, educational, and administrative work. 1. I have organized the retinal department of the clinic, particularly the surgery of the posterior segment of the eye. 2. I have been in charge of the above department since 1990 (24 years). I have performed a great amount of surgeries (200-250 annually), concerning vitreous and retinal microsurgery. 3. I actively participate in the majority of other surgeries that take place in our clinic. 4. I perform a large amount of laser surgeries. 5. I am involved with specific diagnostic tests, such as fluroangiography, indocianine green angiography (ICG), ultrasound A and B, and optical coherence tomography (OCT).

6. I have used many times treatments like verteporphine (PDT), intravitreal injection, and implants (anti-VEGF, Ozurdex, JETREA). 7. I monitor and treat many patients with posterior segment pathology.

ADMINISTRATIVE WORK

1. President of the Ophthalmological Society of Western Greece and the Peloponnese (2001-2003), and Member of the Board of Directors (Vice President - Treasurer - Secretary-General) for many years. 2. Founding Member of the Greek Vitreoretinal Society in 1995, member of the Steering Committee for many years, and President of the same company (2002- 2004). 3. Greek representative at the European Vitreoretinal Society (EVRS). 4. Chairwoman of the organizing committees of scientific conferences, of the Ophthalmological Society of Western Greece and the Peloponnese. 5. Chairwoman or member of the organizing committees for the PanHellenic and International Ophthalmological Conferences. 6. Chairwoman or member of the board during lectures, announcements, and round tables. 7. Part of the Board of Greek Federation of Ophthalmological Societies. 8. Greek representative at the European Union for Medical Specialists (UEMS). 9. Member of the European Board of Ophthalmology (EBO). 10. Member of the selection committee of Ioannina, granting medical specialties, since 2004.

SCHOLARSHIPS - FUNDED RESEARCH PROJECTS - MULTICENTERED STUDIES - RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

1. Fellow of the State Scholarships Foundation (following examinations) during Medical School. 2. Grant from the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF), through the district of Epirus, for the submitted subproject: “Strengthening Research Equipment for the Study of Macular Diseases”. 3. Participation in funded research program, “Training in Health Matters”, by the EEC, for recording and treating Diabetic Retinopathy, titled: “Education, Inventory, Troubleshooting, and Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy in Epirus.” 4. In charge of research protocol:  European epidemiological cohort study on the safety of use of pegaptanib in exudative age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD). (Completed). 5. Participation in research protocols: a) Observational study to assess the safety of ranibizumab, in patients with choroidal neovascularization due to age-related macular degeneration (Completed).

b) Epidemiological research work to assess the incidence of macular edema due to age-related macular degeneration, wet type (wAMD), diabetic macular edema (DME), and secondary edema following retinal vein occlusion (RVO). (Completed). c) A prospective observation study to assess the effectiveness of intravitreal aflibercept injection in routine clinical practice in treatment naive patients with wet age – related macular degeneration in Greece . (Completed). 6. Continuous collaboration, of multiple years, with the Laboratory of Biological Chemistry of the Medical School of University of Ioannina. One of the subject matters: Molecular mechanisms of the function of the inhibitors of the tyrosine kinase in angiogenesis in the cornea (experimental study). Publication in medical journal, Cancer Research, 2004. 7. Cooperation (as the scientific coordinator of the University Eye Clinic) with department of Medical Genetics and Biology at the Medical School of the University of Lausanne, for the study of patients suffering from congenital retinal diseases. 8. Collaboration in a clinical and research level with the hematology lab, the Nephrology Clinic, the Clinic of Endocrinology, the Department of Neurology, the Laboratory of Molecular Biology, and the department of Hygiene and Epidemiology. 9. Participation as a partner in two large multicenter European studies which involved the treatment of complicated or simple types of retinal detachment, which resulted in the publication of 3 papers in the journal “Ophthalmology”, in 2013 and 2014.
