2014 ANNUAL REPORT Contributing to the future of health care Dear colleagues,

The commitment and generosity of contributors to the Hospital Association Political Action Committee (NHA PAC) has played an influential role in shaping the political landscape for years to come. In the 2014 elections, the NHA PAC was integral to ensuring NHA’s financial support of candidates who will advocate for the needs of our membership. The support of our participating members, following a strong fundraising effort in 2013, solidified NHA’s ability to build a team of health care champions in our state and nation’s capitols. The NHA PAC mission remains steadfast: support political candidates who share our position that state and federal health policy should strengthen our ability to improve health care in the communities we serve.

This year was particularly significant for the NHA PAC. Not only would Nebraska elect a new governor for the first time in 10 years, but term limits would also affect the Nebraska Unicameral more so than any year since the PAC’s inception in 2010. Legislative candidates campaigned for 17 open seats. Eight incumbents ran for re-election, all but two facing challengers. With at least one-third of the Legislature new in 2015, the NHA PAC had the opportunity to help mold a new era of policymaking in Nebraska.

In 2014, the NHA PAC raised $43,338 through the contributions of 366 individuals. The number of hospital communities participating grew to 53 and the amount of the average contribution increased as well. We thank all of those who made 2014 a success; the many contributors, the NHA PAC Steering Committee for their commitment to the ideals that set the NHA PAC apart from other political action committees in Nebraska and to the NHA PAC Pacesetter Award winners for going well beyond the goals set for them.

The success of the NHA PAC since its inception four years ago is attributed to the generosity, leadership and guidance of the hundreds of people that have played a role with the PAC. With the continued commitment of those and the others who will be new to the PAC in 2015, I am confident that the fifth year of the NHA PAC will surpass all others.

The NHA PAC looks forward to working with you in 2015.

Sincerely,

Laura Redoutey, FACHE President

The impact of the NHA PAC is most evident in an election year and 2014 fully illustrated the significance of this important endeavor. The NHA PAC contributed $71,000 to 20 legislative candidates. Fifteen of these candidates that received our support were successful in their campaigns in the NHA PAC’s largest contribution effort to date.

We appreciate the commitment of our dedicated members, who allowed the NHA PAC to help shape policymaking in Nebraska this year. Each year, we strive to meet the goals set through the PAC Steering Committee to ensure that, with each election, we can strengthen the presence of champions for health care amongst our state and national lawmakers. Their influence over the laws that govern our ability to deliver care efficiently and effectively is profound and the impetus for our efforts within the PAC.

Each election introduces candidates that will make decisions on behalf of Nebraska’s hospitals for a minimum of four years. Election outcomes have a long-term impact. Consistent PAC participation results in election year preparedness that helps create long- term stability. Meeting the PAC goals set each year increases the success of the following year and, in turn, the following election. The NHA PAC, therefore, strives for continued growth that exceeds the annual goals set forth by the Steering Committee.

It has been my privilege to serve as the Chairman of the Nebraska Hospital Association Political Action Committee this year. We effected change and helped educate lawmakers on the delivery of health care. I appreciate the dedication of our members, the Committee and NHA staff in 2014, through contributions, time and effort. I look forward to a very successful campaign in 2015 as we continue to make a political difference.

8 | NHA PAC Annual Report www.nebraskahospitals.org | 9 Contributing to our future health care

“We are in a new political age, where advocacy has never been more important than it is today. Over half of our patients are funded by state and federal dollars. Practically all regulations come to us via state and federal laws. Moving forward, it is crucial that our state and federal elected officials making key decisions UNDERSTAND how they uniquely affect each hospital in our state. Hospitals ensure the quality of life of each patient and oftentimes represent the main economic engine in the community.”

Ronald J. Cork, President & CEO Avera St. Anthony’s Hospital, O’Neill

“As a prominent health care organization in McCook, southwest Nebraska and northwest Kansas, it is our mission and obligation to elect advocates for preservation and enhancement to our ability to provide for the health care needs of all of the patients and families that we serve throughout the region. The NHA PAC provides a means for all of us as health care leaders to contribute to a fund that supports political champions of our values and mission. The NHA PAC strengthens our voice and support of our advocacy efforts in our state’s and nation’s capitols. Many in our hospital community and I have supported the NHA PAC from its inception by surpassing our contribution goals each and every year in an effort to ensure and enhance our ability to provide health care services to our region for years to come.”

James P. Ulrich, Jr., CEO Community Hospital, McCook

“The NHA Political Action Committee (PAC) is our instrument to help shape Nebraska’s legislature. Offering financial support to state senate candidates who are willing to listen, support or even advocate our health care agenda has continued to drive successful outcomes for hospitals across Nebraska. With term limits, it becomes even more important for Nebraska hospitals to effectively utilize the PAC monies to support candidates who understand the importance of the health care industry to Nebraska’s health, wellness and economic development efforts. The collective voice of hospital leadership through the NHA PAC builds relationships with the decision-makers within the state capitol leading to a better future of health care in Nebraska. Let’s put forth our best effort!”
