CLERGY LETTER

Christmas – not just for children! Sometimes I hear folk say that Christmas is really just a time for children. It’s true that there will be nativity plays and carol services in our schools and churches, and children will dress up to tell the story of the first Christmas: Mary, Joseph, the baby born in a stable, angels and shepherds. I always find it moving, because it’s so lovely to hear little children tell the story, but I also find it moving because this story is so special to me. It’s special to me not as a child but as an ordinary adult

We perhaps think this story is only for children as it contains much that is supernatural: the angels, the child from God, the bright star . . . these parts of the story go beyond the rational; as adults we may think we’ve grown out of such things. Also, as Jesus is born, the angels bring a message of peace on earth and goodwill to all people which seems so much at odds with the shocking news of terrorism and conflict in our current world. I know, too, that many of us are struggling with personal darkness. All of this might lead us to think the Christmas story is simply a fairy tale, a cosy legend with a happy ending, but not connected with our adult world or lives.

However, the precious message of the Christmas story is that God chose to come close to ordinary human beings in all the joys and sorrows of life, and that he chooses to connect with our world and ordinary lives today. Out of love for us, God entered our world in the form of a helpless baby and put his life into the hands of ordinary human beings. As a result, God understands us and longs to come close to us, to shine his light into our lives at times of darkness as well as times of dazzling joy. So this is a story not just for children, but for all of us, whatever our circumstances. The Christmas story tells us that God is here with us, wherever we are, however we feel.

God is with us - as adults we may struggle to make sense of it. Children have no difficulty believing and wondering and making the leap of faith to live as though it were true. This Christmas we warmly invite you to come to any of our church services to hear the Christmas story again and to dare to believe as Mary, Joseph and the Shepherds did. What happened to them 2000 years ago transformed their lives. I pray that this Christmas you too will meet God, who loves you as you are, and come to know his gifts of peace, love and life.

On behalf of all of us in the clergy team, I wish you every blessing at Christmas! The Rev’d Emma Davies “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teach and admonish one another in wisdom, and sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” (Colossians 3:16.)

So, come and do just that… …at Swinford Rectory… …on Thursdays 3rd & 10th December…

Each week there will be a very informal Eucharist in the sitting-room, with lots of time for quiet and for sharing Scripture and prayer with each other, starting at 12 noon on the dot!

Then at1 pm we’ll share soup and bread and water at a Hunger lunch, with proceeds again to Christian Aid to continue our support our Syrian brothers and sisters: we’ll be away by 2 pm!

All of the summer migrants are long gone and we are now starting to see the arrival of our regular wintering birds. The number of redwing and fieldfare has built significantly over the past few weeks, working their way through the last remaining berries and apples in the hedgerows around the village and surrounding fields. My garden feeders are being topped up regularly now with the normal visitors including nuthatch, great spotted woodpecker, coal tit, long tailed tit and greenfinch.

Stanford Reservoir This autumn and winter I have taken over the completion of the Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS) which is a monitoring scheme for non-breeding water birds in the UK, managed by the British Trust for Ornithology. The nationwide survey has been running since 1947 with around 3000 volunteer counters participating in synchronised monthly counts at wetlands of all habitat types. The data that is collected is used to assess the overall size of waterbird populations, helping to determine trends in numbers and distribution, and assessing the importance of importance of individual sites for waterbirds. So far, I have completed 3 counts (September to November). I have included the data so far below.

The highlights have been the presence of 3 red crested pochard, regular sightings of kingfisher, increasing numbers of goldeneye and wigeon (both winter visitors) and good numbers of tufted duck and pochard. In addition, I found a Mediterranean and Caspian Gull (both uncommon visitors) in the roost a few evenings ago.

Other birds to look out for around the village during the winter months As and when the weather gets colder the pattern of birds around the village change. Over the past few years we have had a good number of wintering blackcaps (normally a summer visitor but increasingly over wintering in the UK), waxwings, which get pushed through from Scandinavia and brambling.

And don’t forget…………….our garden birds will become increasingly reliant on feeders so keep these topped up throughout the winter months. Chris Hubbard VACANCY FOR A SCHOOL GOVERNOR AT SOUTH KILWORTH COFE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Alternatively, please email [email protected] or call me on 01858 571134 to discuss further.

SOME CRIME PREVENTION ADVICE

A few weeks ago prowlers were found in the garden of one of the village’s houses. This led to the rare sight of police officers in South Kilworth (touching wood as I type!), and the even rarer sight of me helping my uniform colleagues with actual police work.

As a result, there have been a few discussions in the pub about how you can help protect your property and what to do.

So, a few basic points to consider…

Firstly, property crime is falling and it is rare in villages such as South Kilworth (touching wood again) so incidents are not common.

However, · Potential burglars will probably have travelled into the village by car, in many cases from a nearby city. So if you notice an unusual vehicle or something / someone that looks out of place, make a note and if in doubt call the police. · Most burglaries occur when there is no-one home, so whether you are leaving the house for a few minutes, the day or a fortnight, remember to shut and lock all your windows and doors · If you have locks on your windows and a burglar alarm installed to your property it is important you use them. A dog can be just as effective! · Get a friend, neighbour or relative to keep an eye on your house or flat. Even the smallest of jobs such as collecting post from the letterbox, sweeping up leaves, putting dustbins out and even mowing your lawn, can make it seem as though someone is home. · If your neighbour is away for a few days, park your spare car on their drive · Invest in some automatic time switches, which switch lights and radios on and off at set times. · Take photographs of expensive items - they may be useful to police to identify the goods and return them to you, should you be unfortunate enough to have them stolen. Keep a note of serial numbers, unusual marks, etc. If you are a MAMIL (Middle aged man in Lycra) don’t rely on your shed / garage security, use locks on the bikes as well. Most thieves are opportunists so the harder you can make it the more likely they are to walk away empty handed

On the night of the prowlers, I walked round the village with my brave spaniel and it was quite obvious who was home and who was not, so it is worth thinking about.

In relation to suspicious callers, again these are rare but …

· Most people who call at your home will be genuine but sometimes people turn up unannounced, with the intention of tricking their way into your home. You should always be aware when someone you don’t know calls at your door. They can be convincing and often persuasive. · A genuine caller will not mind you closing the door for two minutes while you check their ID and most will be happy to make an appointment and return at a later date or time. · If in doubt don’t let them in and call a friend / neighbour

If you have information about crime in Leicester, and Rutland, you can contact the police on 101 or Crimestoppers, which is anonymous on 0800 555 111. In an emergency call 999

More detailed and specific advice is available on the website, www.leics.police.uk

I know most of this is obvious, but it does help to check the basics from time to time.

Cheers, hope this helps Chris Barratt
