SHORT COURSE DETAILS

5D7215 KEUM-BOO ON CHASED AND REPOUSSÉ

Tutor: NANCY MĒGAN CORWIN

Dates: 5 DAYS SUNDAY 3 SEPTEMBER – FRIDAY 8 SEPTEMBER

ABOUT YOUR COURSE:

This course focuses on learning to chase and then how to apply 24k gold foil using the Keum-boo technique to the chased and repoussé irregular surfaces, a technique that entails a different approach than fusing on flat .

You will spend two days making one or two simple chased items of jewellery, based on the tutor's finished samples.

Demonstrations will include the step-by-step process of making two simple silver jewellery items with irregular and textured surfaces; finishing these with findings; depletion silvering of the finished jewellery and finally applying the Keum-boo technique of fusing gold to silver.

The tutor will demonstrate various ways of heating the jewellery to the appropriate temperature for fusing using a hot plate with specially formed supports in red , steel and . The emphasis will be on learning to problem solve the technical challenge of fusing gold onto chased, textured and repoussé surfaces. You should leave with a basic understanding of how the process works and how to problem solve in your own studio.

You are invited to bring a couple of previously chased sterling or fine silver jewellery pieces to class for Keum-boo application as well (no stones or other materials although silver settings for stones that can be heated for depletion silvering are acceptable). The tutor will determine if it is possible within the course time and level of instruction if these pieces will work for the Keum-boo process.

At the end of the course, you should have a minimum of one to two simple, and beautiful, pieces of finished silver jewellery and the ability to use this technique with a few tools in your own studio.

The tutor will bring chasing tools for you to use during class. However, you are invited to supply your own chasing tools, and pitch bowls if you have them.

A basic or beginning knowledge of chasing and repoussé or related technique is required.

LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE Skills development. For those who have taken a related course or have some existing skills. The focus is on further developing and building of skills working towards independent practice.

REQUIRED PREPARATION: Focus in class and come prepared with all required materials and supplies.
