International in The Stefan Szulc Central Statistical Library

The Central Statistical Library owns the greatest collection of world statistical publications, both current and retrospective. Yearbooks of particular countries, mainly from Europe, North America, Asia and Australia, as well as of international institutes such as EUROSTAT, UNO, OECD, ILO, WTO, IMF (from about 150 states and organizations) are of a special importance. Central Statistical Library gathers EU publications from 1962. In its collections there are journals: Agricultural statistics : quarterly bulletin, Bulletin der Europaeischen Gemeinschaften, Consumer Price Index, Eisen und Stahl, European Economy News, Eurostatistics data for short-term economic analysis, Handel, Dienstleistungen und Verkehr, Inforregio news, Inforegio panorama, Money and Finance, Manedlig Bulletin over Udenrigshandelen , Quarterly National Accounts ESA, Quarterly panorama of European business statistics, Statistics in Focus, Unemployment as well as basic statistical yearbooks: Key figures on Europe : Statistical Pocketbook 2006: Data 1995-2005, Agriculture statistical yearbook, Balance of payments, Demographic statistics, EC economic data pocket book, National accounts ESA, Volkswirtschaftliche Gesamt- Rechnungen ESVG, Enquete par sondage sur les forces de travail etc.

Centralna Biblioteka Statystyczna Strona 9 There are large analytical statistical lexicon of EU Member Countries Europe in figures, as well as precious comparison-analytical studies such as Eurostat yearbook 2004 : the statistical guide to Europe: data 1992-2002, Eurostat yearbook ‘ 96 : a statistical eye on Europe 1985-1995, monitoring the EU states development within decades, large monograph on changes in agriculture – L’agriculture dans l‘Europe des Quinze, a two-volume analytical study characterizing European enterprises - Enterprises in Europe , EU integration seen through statistics: Key facts of 18 policy areas etc. From among syntheses treating development of basic life areas in EU countries there are in the Library collection: Panorama of EU industry : an extensive review of the situation and outlook of the manufacturing and service industries in the European Union, Insurance in Europe etc. To the last interesting Library’s purchases belong EUROSTAT publications as follows:  Pocketbook on candidate and potential candidate countries ( 2010 ),  Science, technology and innovation in Europe / European Commission ( 2010),  Europe in figures. Eurostat yearbook 2009 ( 2009),  Health and safety at work in Europe (1999-2007) : a statistical portrait (2010),  Agricultural statistics : main results (2009),  Legal framework for European statistics : the statistical law ( 2010),  Using official statistics to calculate greenhouse gas emissions : a statistical guide (2010),  Combating poverty and social exclusion : a statistical portrait of the European Union ( 2010),  Youth in europe : a statistical portrait ( 2009),  Labour market statistics ( 2009  Eurostat regional yearbook (2009).

In the Library collection there are syntheses discussing the last 50 years of the European Union (Statistical portrait of the European Union 2000 : 50 years of the treaty of Rome establishing the European Economic Community) as well as the trade development in EU Member States in the last 40 years - External and intra- European Union trade : statistical yearbook : data 1958-1998.

There are basic statistical economic UNO’s publications including publications of Regional Economic Commissions and Function Commissions: UN Social-Economic Council, UN Economic Commission for Africa, UN Economic Commission for Latin America, UN Economic Commission for Asia and Pacific, UN Economic Commission for Asia and Far East Countries, UN Economic Commission for Europe, International Narcotics Control Board. The Library covers publications of specialized UN Agencies: International Civil Aviation Organization, International Labour Organization, International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, International Monetary Fund, UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, UN Industry Development Organization, UN Food and Agriculture Organization, World Health Organization, General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, UN Conference for Trade and Development, International Centre for Development and General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

Publications of the former European Economic Community (EEC), International Statistical Institute, Inter-American Statistical Institute, International Social Security Association (ISSA), International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Bank for International Settlements (BIS), Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Nordic Council, World Bureau of Metal Statistics, World Federation of Trade Unions, Benelux Economic Union. A significant group among these publications is constituted by yearbooks and journals such as:  African Statistical Yearbook,  Foreign trade statistics for Africa,  Economic survey of Latin America and the Caribbean,  Economic and social survey of Asia and the Pacific,  Statistical indicators for Asia and the Pacific,  Statistical Yearbook for Asia and the Pacific, Economic survey for Europe,  Etude sur la situation Economique de l Europe,  Economic Bulletin for Europe,  Demographic Yearbook UN.

Centralna Biblioteka Statystyczna Strona 12 The Library possesses metodological studies including unique publications edited by the League of Nations, UNO (Statistical Papers), EUROSTAT, publications of European Statisticians Conferences etc.

The Library covers foreign theoretical literature on statistics and demography including classical items by :  David Begg (Economy),  Alan Barryman (Population system. A general introduction),  Richard Gunst and James Hess (Statistical design and analysis of experiments with applications to engineering and science),  Larry Toothaker (Introductory statistics for the behavioral sciences) and many others. From the beginning of its activity, the Library has been gathering foreign journals, especially in statistics and demography by purchase or exchange, for example, with UNO, OECD, EUROSTAT, IMF, ILO, ICAO, American Statistical Association, International Statistical Institute, Royal Statistical Institute, Library of Congress, Royal Statistical Society, Bureau of Census in Washington, British Museum Library), also with Statistical Office Libraries, with libraries of scientific associations and institutions as well as universities, etc. The methodological, analytical and source journals on statistics and demography were gathered from several dozen years. Centralna Biblioteka Statystyczna Strona 14 Allgemeines Statistisches Archiv, gathered from 1930; Revue d’Economie Politique from years 1888-1890, 1894, 1898, 1914- 1999, Biometrika, gathered from v.10 (1914/1915), The Economist - from 1915, Wirtschaftsdienst – from 1917, Wirtschaft und Statistik, gathered from R.1 (1921), Monthly Bulletin of Statistics, UNO publication gathered from 1919, Journal de la Societé de la Statistique de Paris – in collection from yearbook 55 (1914), „Journal of the American Statistical Association”- full set of yearbooks from 1890/1891, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society (to the year 1887, title Journal of the Statistical Society), gathered from 1847. Within the last title are edited currently 4 series (A,B,C,D), including : Journal of the Royal Statistical Society. Series A being, to some extend, the primary title continuation, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society. Series B, which was edited as „Supplement of the Royal Statistical Society” in years 1934-1948, gathered from vol.1 (1934), Journal of the Royal Statistical Society. Series C (Numbers from 1953 and Journal of the Royal Statistical Society. Series D gathered from 1997 belong to the most valuable foreign journals in the Library. The most valuable collections in Poland are cartographical sets of over 5000 atlases, maps and plans. They include, among others, foreign publications (German, Russian, Austrian, English and French) from XIX century to nowadays. To facilitate users to „move” in the OPAC card index, conducted in the ALEPH Integrated Library Computer System, bibliographic descriptions are grouped in bases and logical sub-bases. The BASE: EUROSTAT is one of bases facilitating search all publication edited by the EU Statistical Office and gathered by the Polish Central Statistical Library. Each user may search a position within any base or sub-base or choose an option ALL DOCUMENTS covering the whole set search. Choosing the index card of key words in the OPAC, a reader can write “European Union” and the searching is automatically limited to papers on EU questions being in possession of the Library. Using links on the Library WEB it is possible to contact any e-catalogue of each library in the world. This makes easier to find an information. For example, it is possible to connect Central Library of European Commission from the CSO’s WEB (www.stat.gov.pl) and from that page – to ECLAS (catalogue of Central Library of European Commission, RESEABIB – Library Net of General Directions and Divisions of EC, EUROLIB (libraries of the community association - http://ec.europa.eu/libraries/doc/index_pl.htm).
