GoCamels.com • 3 Season Outlook 2011 BASEBALL CAMPBELL FIGHTING CAMELS Baseball Season Outlook 2011 After notching the program’s first streak of back to back winning seasons since 2001, and its most wins in nearly a decade, Campbell looks to build on that winning tradition in 2011.

The Camels return four starters in the field and one on the mound from last season’s 28-27 team, who posted wins over in-state rivals North Caro- lina State and East Carolina at Taylor Field. Eight other letterwinners will also return for fourth-year head coach Greg Goff.

All four of those returning starters in the field batted at least .348 last year, with senior Cameron Nelson posting a .396 clip during his junior season. Fellow senior, Ellis Lowe, batted .382, breaking school single-season records for most hits (92), doubles (31), at-bats (241) and sacrifice hits (12).

Campbell has set 43 different school or individual records over the last three years, including 19 during last season alone, including: stolen bases (119), hits (696), doubles (159) and fewest walks allowed (3.73/game).

Coach Goff breaks down his roster and gives an in-depth look at the 2011 Camels.

On the 2011 season… We’re really excited about this year for our seniors. We have some kids that have been here for three years, gone through the rough times, and have gotten this program turned around. Ellis Lowe, Alan Denman, Colin Parker and Cameron Nelson, guys have paid their dues, give us great leadership for the first time in our program. I think that’s going to trans- late into the little things that we’ve been asking our players to do over the last three years and we really feel like that’s a huge attribute to this team.

Biggest improvement from 2010 to 2011… We don’t have a tremendous amount of depth, but I feel like the quality of arms we’re going to throw there is good. We lost some quality pitchers from last season in Jeff Rydman and Logan Davis, but I feel like the stuff that our pitchers have is also good this season. Last year we had some quality starts and really didn’t have anyone late in the game, and this year we’re going to be able to put some guys together that will be able to finish some games. We’ll also be able to identify some rolls that we would maybe want to move over there a little bit as well, like Bryce Grady. haven’t been able to in years past. That should translate into more wins. At second base we have Ellis Lowe and Corey Forrester. Ellis has been a On being able to and run the bases well… starter for three years and should be an all-conference guy. I really feel Those are some things that we like our players to be able to do. I think like there is a lot of stability there at second. Corey, the freshman, has this year is probably the most athletic team that we’ve had since I’ve been come in and really pushed. He’s a really good athlete and we’re looking for here. We have a lot more guys with better speed and that should translate some great things out of him. into more runs for us. We’ve been pretty good offensively and we feel like that’s something we will continue to do. I fell like with all the guys we At short we have some newcomers. The new bats may tone that down, but the way from Miami. Both of those guys can play good defense, it’s just a matter we play the short game and run, I think it’s going to be a positive for us of which one is going to swing the bat. I feel like those two guys are really and I don’t think we’re going to lose a lot of offense, or take a lot away going to contribute and make our defense a lot stronger than what it was from what we do. a year ago.

We’ve added some guys that can really run. I feel good about our offense. At third base we have Kyle Holmstrom, Erick Gaylord and Bryce Grady. We’re going to have to figure out what we’re going to do in the DH spot, Bryce could play some second or first, depending on how his arm comes but we’ve got some young guys that can really hit and I think we have 11 around. He can hit, so you have to find a spot for him. We feel good about or 12 guys that are going to be fighting for nine slots, which is exciting for the guys we have here. Matt Marksberry is com- ing off a redshirt year, and we feel like he could be a special left-handed for us. We brought a bunch of new guys in too. Jake Smith could be at the top of our rotation. Ryan Mattes is going to be good for us after pitching a little more than 20 innings last year. He’s a little bit stronger now, and he throws a lot of strikes. We feel like he’s going to be in the mix as a middle reliever.

We brought in Ryan Koopman and Brandon Wilson, two right-handed pitchers who we feel like are going to be outstanding as well. They will have a chance this year to make a name for themselves as freshman.

After guiding Campbell to its most wins in nearly a decade last season, Greg Goff enters his fourth season as head baseball coach at Campbell University.

Campbell has set 43 different school or individual records over the last three years, including 19 during last season alone, including: stolen bases (119), hits (696), doubles (159) and fewest walks allowed (3.73/game). As an assistant coach, Haire has helped guide teams that set school re- cords for wins in three of the past five seasons (Sterling College 2004: 37, Ouachita Baptist University 2006: 31, OBU 2007: 50). Before his move to Campbell, Haire spent four years as an assistant under head coach Scott Norwood. Haire helped lead NCAA Division II Ouachita Baptist University to a 107-61 win-loss record from 2005-2007. Haire, Coach Goff’s former Gulf South Conference opponent, led an OBU team that ranked in the nation’s top 20 in team batting average (19th), team (11th), and team fielding percentage (13th), to a 50-10 record and a Gulf South Conference West Division Championship, in 2007.

In five years, Haire has coached 21 all-conference players, 12 all-region players, two conference players of the year, two region players of the year, and seven All-Americans. In addition, Haire has seen eight former players sign professional contracts, including 2008 25th round selection .

Prior to his years at OBU, Haire spent one year as the pitching coach at Sterling College. In 2004 the Warriors boasted a 37-18 record, and won both the KCAC ERA title (3.01) and KCAC tournament championship, and had two All-American pitchers.
