Parents’ Newsletter: Issue 3 March 2017 Welcome to the third newsletter of this academic year. Year 11: GCSE Preparation

For our Year 11 students, the entry exams will seem already a distant memory as attention turns to the completion of controlled assessments and the final revision preparation for the terminal exams. The forthcoming Easter break presents a very welcome chance to put those revision plans into action but it also marks the end of formal teaching of the curriculum in most examination subjects. The students are now armed with revision timetable templates and advice on how to get organised for the task ahead. In addition, a group of students have responded well to our work with the ‘Elevate’ Programme, designed to support Year 11 by hearing about strategies used effectively by former students who have now moved on to University. This again, has been well received by all those taking part. I’d also like to take this opportunity to remind parents about our online revision programme, SAM Learning, which can be accessed via our website and provides students with an alternative revision supplement that had already proven popular with those who prefer a more technology-based revision aid. Mr Patrick has been collating revision programmes in order to try and ensure after-school and lunchtime sessions are as widely accessible as possible. Details of the revision sessions are given at the end of the newsletter. We have been impressed by the attitude and resilience being shown by the vast majority of our Year 11 cohort. The road ahead will be a difficult and challenging one but we are confident they will rise to the challenge. Attendance We would like to remind all parents of the importance of regular school attendance and the impact non-attendance has on a child’s ability to succeed. As parents will be aware, the threshold for being deemed as persistently absent rose in September 2015 from 85% to 90% attendance. Government studies on the impact of absence on student achievement are quite compelling:

Overall Attendance Percentage 100% 95% - 99% 90% - 94% 85% - 89% 80% - 84% % gaining 5+ A*- C GCSEs 80% 73% 57% 41% 29% including English & Maths

Year 11 Leavers’ Hoodies

Final arrangements for the rest of the academic year are underway for our Year 11 students. Please keep an eye out for letters that will be coming home detailing Dinner Dance etc. The Leavers Hoodies are currently being designed by Trutex and if you do not wish your child’s name to be displayed on the back, please contact the school by 17th March 2017. Notice for all parents: Making appointments

I would like to take this opportunity to remind all parents that we have a protocol for booking appointments to see staff during school time. We have recently seen an increase in the number of parents presenting at reception and asking to see a member of staff immediately. This often occurs during extremely busy times at the beginning or end of the school day. Can I remind all parents that all staff, including Heads of Year and all members of the senior management team, have teaching commitments during the school day and are often involved in meetings that have already been booked into the diary. We are always happy to meet with parents face to face, or discuss concerns via telephone and welcome such contact to enable us to work with you to support your son or daughter at school. However, parents who arrive without making an appointment cannot usually be accommodated. Please telephone our reception on the main school number 01452 770301 to make an appointment to see a member of staff. The meeting can then be put into staff diaries ensuring adequate time can be given to the meeting whilst enabling staff to manage their workloads during the school day. This helps to ensure all parents are able to discuss any concerns that may arise in a timely manner. Thank you for your assistance in this matter. Mental Health Pilot to be Expanded

Over the last year, Thomas Keble has been involved as part of a pilot programme to enhance Mental Health provision for young people in the area. Under the leadership of Mrs Rossiter, we have contributed to developing a range of support for young people and have benefited from a range of opportunities and resources including mental health training for students, staff and parents and regular access to mental health nurses who have worked closely with our Head of Year and pastoral support team to support students in all year groups. I am delighted to report that as a result of the positive feedback from pilot schools, the programme is being rolled out to all schools in Stroud and Gloucester city. This is a significant step forwards in delivering sustainable mental health support for young people in . Uniform Updates Following a request made by the student council, I am pleased to confirm that we will be introducing grey, tailored shorts as a uniform option to be worn during Term 6 of the academic year. This uniform option is available to both boys and girls. However, please note that only shorts sold by Trutex in Stroud are included in the uniform codes. We do understand that some parents have struggled to find trousers of an appropriate length at Trutex and we have therefore decided that dark grey, tailored trousers from alternative quality uniform suppliers (e.g. Marks & Spencers) will be permitted to ease the situation for parents. However, the Harrow grey Trutex styles should still be the default uniform choice. I would also like to take this opportunity to remind all parents that black trousers, of any type, are not part of our uniform at Thomas Keble. If students wear black trousers to school, parents will be contacted to correct this.

Careers’ Ambassadors Appointed The first students at Thomas Keble to become Careers Ambassadors for the school have just been appointed. This important role for each of the students will enable them to work alongside staff and help to extend further the very close links between the school and local employers. Nine students were successful in their application to the Careers Coordinator, Mrs Rendell, showing they were keen to become involved in a vast number of activities linked to Careers work. The students had to prove that they were reliable, trustworthy and polite as well as being punctual. 5

They have been given a range of important duties such as looking after a large number of employers that visit the school during Careers Week including employers who attend the Apprenticeship Fair. Furthermore they will be responsible for participating in a meeting with the Careers Mark assessor in March as well as playing an important role during the Year 10 “Ask the Professional” day with over 20 employers attending, and the annual Post 16 Evening with many providers from all over the county. Careers Week February 27th to March 3rd Careers Week saw 30 local employers in school willing to share information about their job and everything that they do on a daily basis with all of the students. These employers were available each lunchtime for the students in all year groups to chat to and for advice to be shared about options at 16+ and 18+. Our KS4 Conservatory was certainly buzzing with conversations about future plans. Our new Careers Ambassadors (see right) were certainly kept busy during their first week in post! Careers Week ended with an Apprenticeship Fair aimed at our Year 9 students who are making decisions about their KS4 option subjects. Employers who offer apprenticeships attended the event and Year 9 students maximised on the event finding out as much as they could about apprenticeships. Year 7 students were given an introduction to careers and to help them start thinking about future options they took part in an activity called Name the Job where they were given the chance to ask questions to find out about what our invited guests did as jobs. Student Gallery

We always like to share our students’ creative talents. In this edition of our newsletter, we’d like to share some examples of Year 8 art sketchbooks:

Rosie Langston 8MAXB Archie Trueman 8JEB World Book Day 2017 The school was taken over by dementors, superheroes and fairy story characters including Alice in Wonderland and Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz on Thursday March 2nd as Year 11 donned their fancy dress in support of World Book Day. Our students never cease to amaze us with their creativity and commitment to the cause with some enduring heavy and extremely hot fancy dress suits to raise a smile. Staff were not to be left out with the Mad Hatter, Macbeth, Snow White and four of her (his) dwarves turning out. As the GCSE season approaches, it was wonderful to see Year 11 able to relax a little, although despite the costumes, it was business as usual in the classroom! Year 10 are already planning the costumes for next year but everyone agreed, this year will take some beating. Well done everyone.

Readathon 2017

Nearly 30 keen readers from Years 7- 11 signed up to take part in our Readathon, a sponsored read that raises money to send books and storytellers to seriously ill children in local hospitals. Their pledge was to read even more than usual to raise as much money as possible for the cause.

Thomas Keble School Famelab Competition Thomas Keble School recently hosted representatives from Cheltenham Science Festivals to judge the TK Famelab finals. 90 Year 9 pupils spent the first two terms of this academic year researching their chosen Science topic to present in a three minute presentation. Ten finalists made it through to the final and covered topics such as Trains, Brand vs Generic, Speed and even Jellyfish. The ten finalists were Lily Bryant, Devon Martin, Rebecca Woodward, Dan Green, Kyle Godwin, Matty Cox, Florence Hawker, Issy Lury and Molly Hulse. The overall winner and Thomas Keble’s 2017 Famelab Academy competitor was Rowan Phipps with his talk entitled 'Happiness, Depression and Being Weird'. Rowan will be accompanied by the rest of the Thomas Keble finalists at the grand final which takes place soon. We will let you know how we get on!

School Production: ‘Great Expectations’ Rehearsals are going well for this year’s production, Great Expectations, and students are getting to grips well with Dickens’ narrative style. The fast waltz in the second act is proving a challenge, but our students always rise to challenges and we will certainly get there by performance week, which is Monday 20th to Wednesday 22nd March. Tickets are priced at £5 for adults, £3 for students and senior citizens, and £15 for a family ticket admitting two adults and two concessions. Letters have been issued inviting parents to apply for tickets.

Theatre trips The department has enjoyed three trips to the theatre so far this year, with more to come. A very large group of KS3 students went off to see the pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk in Dursley, and it is pleasing that this annual pantomime trip seems to attract more and more students every year.

All of our GCSE students were very excited to see the notoriously scary production, The Woman in Black at The Everyman Theatre, and it is always entertaining to see so many of our ‘coolest’ students shrinking into their seats and shrieking in terror at the scariest moments of the play. We also ran a joint student/staff trip more recently to The Everyman Theatre to see the comedy The Play that Goes Wrong, about a play that falls to pieces (literally) on stage before the audience’s eyes, and the twelve Year 9s accompanying the staff enjoyed the show immensely. Year 10 GCSE Drama classes also went to see our set text Blood Brothers at The Wyvern Theatre in Swindon,

Adventure club takes to the slopes!

This term 31 students have completed 5 weeks of beginner and advanced skiing tuition at Gloucester Ski and Snowboard Centre. Mrs Parfitt, Miss Roberts and Mr Hemming accompanied students during their sessions at the centre. After completion of the five week course, under some very good instruction from qualified ski instructors, all pupils have mastered the basics of skiing. Each pupil gradually moved further up the slopes, getting nearer and nearer to the ski park at the top of the slope. All of the students found the sessions fun and challenging and a rewarding experience. Over half of the pupils can now “free ski”, which means they can now use the centre without supervision from an instructor. After Easter we will be starting taster Climbing sessions and then after May half term we will begin our Water Sports Programme at South Cerney Outdoor Education Centre. Please see Mrs Parfitt or Mr Hemming for more details about Adventure Club.

Sports News from the PE Department Welcome to the Sports Newsletter for Term 3 and 4. Over the last few weeks, staff and students have been involved in numerous trips including: the ski trip to Austria; the Rugby and Netball tour to Paris; the West Bromwich football trip and an amazing trip to Twickenham for the Six Nations Rugby! So much to write about and that’s not even mentioning some of the outstanding sports achievements that have taken place! SPORTS RESULTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS:

County X-Country Millie Haywood has recently been selected to represent the County at the National X-Country Championships. She was also entered into the Midland indoor championships covering 17 counties. Millie got through the heats and came 4th in the finals which was an amazing experience for her. She had also been entered in the final Gloucestershire league cross country race and came 8th. The overall place for the four events for Millie was joint 4th even though she missed one in order to run in the Schools’ Cross Country in Wales. Amazing achievements from a very special runner. RUGBY AND NETBALL TRIP TO PARIS:

The U16 Rugby and Netball teams have just come back from an amazing 4 day tour to Paris, France. They played a Netball ‘A’ match against local opposition as well as a Rugby game against a very strong team from Paris. They enjoyed a sightseeing trip in the capital as well as visiting the Stade de France for a Stadium tour before the fantastic experience of watching France v Scotland in the Six Nations Championships. An awesome 9

trip with some fantastic memories! Thanks also to KB Coaches for providing the transport and the donation of free bobble hats for all pupils and staff.

Ski Trip to Austria This February break has been full of sport and this was added to by our Ski trip to Austria. 43 pupils took to the slopes in Kaprun in Zell am See to take part in 6 days of skiing and snowboarding. The pupils also watched an ice hockey match, went ice skating, tobogganing and got to get their ‘glad rags’ on to attend a disco with other schools on one of their last nights. A special thank you must go to Sub 32 for their generous donation of Ski Ties for all our pupils and staff. It was a superb trip and we are already planning to go back there again in 2 years’ time.

Basketball We have almost finished our Basketball season now and we can look back at some outstanding performances and successes at District and County level. Our U13 and U15 teams have also been playing in the prestigious and very challenging South West League. This has seen them play against schools from all over the South West Region. One particular game to remember was against Millfield school where our U13 team narrowly lost in a very close and tense game.

Football The District Football season is in full flow and all our boys and girls teams have been playing in their respective leagues and tournament competitions. Our U13 boys’ team remains unbeaten having won their last 3 matches, scoring 15 goals and only conceding 2! Our Year 11 team are still in the hunt 10 for a place in the A league final having won 2 and lost 2 with one more game to play. Our girls’ U16 team played their hearts out to finish an amazing 3rd in the District with Lucy Herbert player of the Tournament. Our Year 7s have played 5 matches so far and still have their District Tournament to come. We have celebrated Liam Dailey, Lewis Hicks and Blake Cowling all of whom have been selected to play for the U15 District team recently.

West Brom Football Club Match Day Package V Stoke City On Saturday 4th February TK took 40 pupils to West Bromwich Football Club for a Match Day Package. This included a tour of the stadium, an indoor tournament run by West Brom Coaches, lunch and tickets for the Premiership game v Stoke City. The game finished 1-0 to West Bromwich and some of the pupils even got to be on the pitch as flag bearers as the players ran on in front of 28,000 fans. An awesome experience! Primary School Links Our Primary School tournaments keep on coming thick and fast and on Monday 30th January TK hosted and ran a Quicksticks Hockey competition at Inside Football in Brimscombe. This involved 8 teams from 5 different schools: Chalford Hill, Bisley, Thrupp, Christchurch and Oakridge. Well done to Chalford Hill for winning the tournament!

Hockey All our girls’ hockey teams have now finished their friendly matches and are about to take part in their respective tournaments. These will involve them playing against all the other schools in the Stroud and Cotswold Districts. Standout results this term have come from the U16 girls’ team who beat SWR in a thrilling game and our super talented U14 team who beat Deer Park school 5-0 in a scintillating display of attacking hockey. 11

TWICKENHAM SIX NATIONS RUGBY TRIP: On Sunday 26th February TK visited Twickenham Rugby Stadium to watch play Italy in the Six Nations. We took 40 pupils to be part of an 82,000-strong crowd of fans all cheering for England in what turned out to be a controversial and intriguing game. England won 36-15 and all the pupils went home happy and enthused by what was an incredible experience.

Thomas Keble Careers in Sport Afternoon On Thursday 26th January the PE department hosted 6 different Further Education Colleges / 6th Forms and Institutes to talk to our GCSE PE / BTEC Sport pupils about life after TK. These included Wycliffe College, Marling 6th Form, Archway 6th Form, Cirencester College, SGS College and Forest Green Rovers who talked about Video analysis for their 1st team. The afternoon was a huge success and the 60 pupils who attended all were able to find out about the various courses and opportunities available to them beyond their time at TK. Badminton We have recently seen some superb results for our Badminton teams. First up was the District Championships which involved our U14 Boys’ and U16 Girls’ and Boys’ teams competing against the best schools in the District. Our U14 Boys’ team finished runners-up and our U16 boys team were crowned Champions in emphatic style winning all their matches. The U16 team then went on to the County Finals playing against the winners of all the other Districts in Gloucestershire. They beat Gloucester, the Forest of Dean and the Cotswold winners losing only to the very strong Cheltenham representatives (). This meant they were the Silver medallists in the County. A superb achievement. We now look forward to even more success stories at TK leading up to the Easter break including our Superleague Netball trip to Team Bath on Friday 24th March! After that we are already getting excited about our summer sports programme in the Summer term!

Lost Property There is a large amount of Lost Property to be reclaimed. It will be on display in the Hall up to 4pm each day from Monday 13 March through to Friday 17 March to give all pupils and parents an opportunity to view it. Please do come and see whether any of the items belong to your child.

Governor Vacancy at The Croft Primary School, Painswick The Croft Primary School is looking for someone to join the Governing body as a Co-opted Governor. The normal term of office would be for four years. Specifically they are looking for someone with good links to local secondary schools, or perhaps links into local businesses. Finance skills would also be useful to assist them in the setting and monitoring of budgets, as these get tighter. The vacancy is registered on the SGOSS system (www.SGOSS.org.uk), with the contact as Dr Ian Cridland, Chair of Governors. Alternatively contact Mrs Rebecca Gore, Headteacher, at the school (01452 812479), The Croft Primary School, Churchill Way, Painswick. Glos GL6 6RQ.

Bag-packing at Tesco to raise Funds for Rugby/Netball Tour In an effort to raise funds to support their rugby/netball tour to Paris during half-term, the rugby and netball teams, kindly supported by staff and parents, gave up a Saturday in February to pack bags at Tesco. Their hard work and courteous attitude to customers enabled them to raise the magnificent total of £757 which was put towards kit! A huge thank you is due to everyone who participated.
