TUESDAY, APRIL 3, 2018 Daughter rallying to change father’s fate

By Gayla Cawley ITEM STAFF A Lynn native was convicted more than 20 years ago of killing his lover’s husband in Florida. Now his daughter is trying to free him from prison, claiming that her fa- ther is innocent of the crime. David Turenne, a 42-year-old Canadian Air Force major, was bludgeoned to death with a claw-hammer outside his Panama City, Fla., home in February 1996. Ralph E. Crompton, a Lynn native and Lynn Vocational Technical Institute grad- uate, was convicted of rst-degree murder later that year for allegedly striking the fatal blow. He is serving a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, per Florida law. Crompton, a retired U.S. Air Force mas- ter sergeant, was having an affair with the man’s wife, Monique Turenne, who was convicted of second-degree murder in Boys & Girls of Lynn 2005 for orchestrating the homicide. She admitted to luring her husband outside that night where Crompton was waiting. have lost a good friend During the trial, defense attorneys maintained that it was actually Monique who killed her husband. By Thomas Grillo ITEM STAFF Yassine Benouardia knows he has little chance to be elected state representative from Lynn this year. But that hasn’t discouraged the 19-year- old Moroccan native from entering the race to ll the seat vacated by former state Rep. Brendan Crighton, who was recently elected to the state senate. The West Lynn resident immigrated to the U.S. with his parents and a brother and a sister in 2008 with big dreams. “My ultimate goal is to be president of the United States,” he said. “I know I can’t run because the Constitution prohibits it, but gay marriage wasn’t a thing a few years ago and neither was a woman’s right to vote. Things will change. Anything can happen.” Benouardia, an Independent, joins a eld that includes Ward 6 City Councilor Peter Capano, Lynn Museum/Lynn Arts executive director Drew Russo, and City Councilor-at-Large Hong Net, all Demo- History may be dodging crats.
