  • The Frog Bride – Program Notes Page 1 of 5
[email protected] 845.358-9677 327 North Broadway, Nyack, NY 10960 The Frog Bride Program Notes When a frog talks, listen. It’s a voice from the wet, murky swamp – half land, half water - where anything can happen. I first heard The Frog Bride story from poet Robert Bly, then I read several versions of it in collections of Russian fairy tales. In this yarn the qualities of innocence, wonder, loss and discovery are clothed in the characters of princes, frogs, witches, and one very enchanted young lady. Yes, he marries a frog, but that is just the beginning of the adventure. The Frog Bride has everything I love in stories; great characters and settings, a truly troublesome problem, a quest, and the unearthing of wisdom. Prokofiev’s “Five Melodies for Violin and Piano” was chosen for its beauty, its emotional power and complexity, and because the movements are just the right length. Kandinsky’s paintings were selected from the Guggenheim Museum’s collection for their sheer lyrical beauty but also to reflect the artist’s evolution as one of the founders of abstract art. Enjoy! • Lisasokolovq&A with Don Lucoff
LisaSokolovQ&A with Don Lucoff 1. How does music therapy apply and/or influence your artistry? My experience of working with others through music has deepened my awe of music as an expressive language and it’s power and capacity to communicate and connect us with each other and with our own humanity. The development and refinement of my capacity to listen in this work has also opened many doors for me as a musician. In addition, the music that I have heard from the many people that I have worked with has been inspiring, and has taught me something about singing from an essential place. 2. Tell our readers about your experience as a lay cantor? When an opportunity came for me 8 years ago to cantor with a community rabbi I didn’t hesitate, as it seemed a natural next step in my path as a singer. It gave me an opportunity to explore the embodiment of pure unadulterated praise though singing. What a joy this is. It gave me an opportunity to begin learning a new language and a new body of music. Suddenly I had to really practice to learn all of this material. I welcomed that sense of being a beginner again. I also love to create new settings for these old melodies that live in my DNA. As for context, people come into a service with an intention to touch into their soul. This is a rich and fertile ground to offer music within an experience of community flying with you. 3. I see that you recorded Kol Nidre How does your work as a lay cantor influence your music? What a beautiful thing to be able to enter into the realm of this music with my son Jake on cello.

  • Northern Nashville Country Music Club October 2013 Newsletter
Northern Nashville Country Music Club October 2013 Newsletter Seems to be a regular occurrence these days bands cancelling doesn’t happen for ages then it’s one after the other, our September show as you know was supposed to be The Outlaws supported by Ellis County. Two weeks ago we got a phone call to tell us that The Outlaws were unable to make their bookings in Scotland due to illness and at very short notice the Murphy’s stepped in to cover their dates. I knew the Murphy’s were made up of three young girls and their dad but didn’t really know anything very much about them so along with everyone else went along on Friday night not knowing what to expect. The show was opened by Ellis County last time they played for us was in January 2012 when Willie Mac was accompanied by Dan from America on guitar, well Willie was here but with him this time was Brian Hughes who on his last visit to the club was fronting the great band Brian Hughes and the Lonesharks (hope you are following –it’s a bit complicated) Like last time Ellis County went down well with the members apart from throwing in a couple of Irish numbers they stuck to pure country music covering old standards but also some up to date material both guys have good country voices and knew what would go down well with the members keeping them dancing. Brian is finding playing as part of a duo a bit different however he still plays all the major festivals along with his band but he was just so disillusioned with the way the clubs were going in the south that he felt it was no longer feasible for him to keep the band on the road, the clubs were only interested in line dancing country music just didn’t come into it.
