CLUB PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

WE DID IT, well the next best thing in my eyes. I have always said that if we don’t win a premiership winning the Turnbull /Richardson cup is the next best thing. Although we came so agonisingly close to 1st grade premiership this year, we managed to steal one thing away from Burwood this season and bring the Turnbull/ Richardson Cup home to Epping for the first time in its 21 year existence. It was an honour to stand there as President of this great club and receive the cup for the first time and take the trophy off Burwood and place in the hands of the Bulls. Briars had pretty much taken it for granted that every year the trophy just came out of their cabinet only to be handed back to them at the conclusion of that round’s games. When it landed in the Bull Pen it is sad to say it was in pretty ordinary condition and needed a bit of TLC and Bulls attention. It now sits proudly in the club house with EDCC season 2012/13 engraved on it for the first time. Thank you to all our members who made that happen and fulfilled a long time goal of ours. It was a great moment in the club’s history, quite an achievement to mark our 80 th anniversary season, and one of those moments that we will all remember and take with us into the future. Welcome to the Bull Pen Mr Turnbull/ Richardson Cup. Let’s keep it on our hands for a decade or two Bulls.

1st grade was the highlight of our club success this season with a late charge into the finals and a Grand Final spot against old foes Burwood Briars. It was a toss of the coin literally that decided this year’s premiers and we can only sit back and ponder what if, the covers were removed on Good Friday, what if we had won the toss, what if McLaughlan wasn’t playing for the Briars but we can’t and instead we turn our attention to what did happen and the awesome effort that each and everyone who participated in that team did in representing the Bulls over that weekend. The club rode the wave of highs and lows and an awesome comeback on day 2 by the team and the Clubman of the Year Anthony Boorer, AB just about delivered us the premiership. Great effort boys, I and the rest of the club are very proud of your efforts this season and the fight you showed under the difficult conditions. Special mention and thanks must be made to Nutty and Wheats who captained the side this year. Nutty for the first half and Wheats for the 2nd half. The team definitely rose to the challenge under both captains and although he has decided to hang up the spikes for the time being Ian Wheatley will be missed greatly both on and off the field and in particular during the fines meetings that he happens to be the king of the kangaroo court. Your banter, whit and leadership will be missed and I’d like to thank you for everything you have given to the Bulls over the past decade or two and hope that it’s not a permanent retirement but an intermittent break from the Bulls. Thanks mate

Although 1st grade had a successful season, 2nd grade had an almost as successful season being the 2nd grade minor premiers. Morgs and his team can only look back on what could have been. Burwood were in massive trouble in the major semi final and Bulls were charging to GF berth in both 1’s and 2’s. Morgs was so confident that he asked me for a cricket ball for next week and I was too was also so confident I unreservedly threw him a couple of pills, but as history will show cricket can be a cruel game. An old cliché ‘It is never over until the final ball is bowled’ and once again Burwood showed they are a mighty club to knock our 2’s out of the final race. A great season none the less and very well lead by a new captain and supported well by a group of young guys that will carry our club through into the next generation of success that is duly owed to our great club. Well done Morgs and the 2’s squad for an awesome season and I look forward to seeing what you guys will bring to season 13/14

With a full list of availabilities Third grade and Fourth grade looked awesome on paper and in rare occasions when that list was on the paddock glimpses of what was achievable was on show for the whole club to see. However those highlights were rarely seen for long periods and both sides were severely hampered in a growing list of unavailable players. Kimon Darmon captained 3rd grade and although frustrating he lead the team positively and showed the type of person and leader he is by actions on the field, thanks Kimon your efforts don’t go unseen or unappreciated by your club and your teammates. Respect is earned and not granted and you have earned the respect of all those who play under you.

Fourth grade was led by our ever young Mike Wirth and a man that really wears his heart on his sleeve is our Wirthy. Wednesday in my house was known as Wirthy Wednesday and if the phone call was not received then I began to get worried that something had happened to him. In a mixed season and as it is the case the lowest grade always has the hardest time with having a regular team unavailability’s were the general highlight each week in Wirthys world. During the season Wirthy stepped aside and gave up his spot in the team for a group of young guys in what he believes is the long term benefit of the club. A selfless act that shows what sort of person we have in our club and what sort of person we want in our club, thanks Wirthy.

Our 5th grade returned to the Tim Creer Cup and what can only be defined as a very, very tough season Naji Haider stepped up to captain the Feisty fives and did so with plenty pride. The Feisty struggled week in week out

Annual Report Season 2012-13 3 again with numbers but also with some quality. The Tim Creer cup although known as the unofficial 5th grade of shire cricket is anything but a 5th grade comp with plenty of quality cricketers running around for one reason or another. Well done Naji we appreciate your heart and spirit when taking the field and leading the Feisty Fives each week.

As it has been the case for the past few seasons plenty of hope was pinned firmly on the shoulders of Mick McKeough and the under 24’s squad. A squad that has been together for a few years now Mick lead the 24’s into season of mixed results. When down and out, and with Kenny telling the world that it was all over, they fought hard to claw their way back into finals contention and reach the final 4. In a rain effected semi final and really a game that we didn’t hold much hope of going ahead the 24’s went down to the premiers Warringah. The squad showed plenty of fight and spirit that has galvanised the team and we trust will take them to the next level. Well done Mick on a great season and you led from the front and showed leadership qualities that I hope will see you lead our first grade team into the new era.

Thank you to all the captains for leading the club each and every week. A special thank also must go to the legend Tim Creer backing up and being the chairman of selectors again this season. A very tough job but one he does every week with no complaint. Thanks Tim you contributions are greatly appreciated

Our season was filled with plenty of highlights and one particular stat I have not seen at my time of the club was the amount of centuries being turned out by the Bulls. For every week up to Xmas there was a century being scored by a Bull in every round. An unbelievable feat that saw Mick Sedgers contemplating raising the fees to cover the amount of trophies we were looking at having to supply at the end of the season. A total of 15 centuries and another 5 scores in the 90’s were achieved by the Bulls a remarkable achievement. It’s a batsman game now! Great effort all centurians.

Each year we acknowledge the performances in each grade by awarding the most consistent achievements of individuals, this year the following are the awards winners for each grade

Dave Gilbert Medal (1st Grade) – Mick McKeough Gavin Robertson Medal (2nd Grade) – Pat Tay Ron Payne Medal (3rd Grade) – Justin Bradley Tim Creer Medal (4th Grade) – Stephen Allard Graeme Baird Medal (5th Grade) – Paul James Gary Bensley Medal (All Grades) – Stephen Allard Ian Wheatley Medal (U’24’s) – Stephen Sharp – second successive year

Congratulations to you all on an outstanding season.

Our most prestigious awards each season are the Cricketer of the Year, the Under 24s Cricketer of the Year and the Graeme Kightley Clubman of the Year. I am pleased to say that 3 of our Club’s finest took home the spoils this year. Dave Hossack proved yet again his all round worth and skill by taking out the keenly fought COTY. Mick McKeough made it 2 years out of three for the Young COTY and evergreen Anthony Boorer was rewarded for his tireless efforts off the paddock with the Kightley Clubman award. Deserved winners all.

Once again and I say it each and every year and no truer word can be spoken that without a strong group of people involved in running the club then a club will cease to exist. We are blessed to have such a strong group individuals involved in running this great club. The success of our club is greatly attributed to the committee that each and every month both off season and during the season do what they do to make sure our club is strong both on and off the field. Our committee consists of Vice President- Ian Fowler Secretary- Graeme Baird Treasurer- Mick Sedgers Committee members – Anthony Boorer, Mark Bruce, Mick McKeough and Matt Hodgins

Thanks guys for your time and effort each and every week our success is greatly due to your leadership. I’m confident I will see you around AB’s table once again and thanks AB for hosting each and every month

Season 12/13 saw the continued role of club coach in David Hossack. David continued where he left off last season and once again our club is greater for having Hoss coaching us. I said it last year and the real measure of success is the continued results on the field and the success of the Bulls in past and forthcoming season. The results of the Bulls can be attributed to Hoss’s efforts. I thank David and his family for all his hard work and dedication to this role. Hoss has decided to retire from playing cricket to pursue his son’s cricketing ambition

4 Epping District Cricket Club Inc. www.eppingbulls.com.au hopefully we will see the Hoss father and son team coming thru the ranks at Epping in the not to distance future. Thanks Hoss for your service.

Once again Hoss was assisted by Kenny Wilcox and as he always does Kenny did a fine job in organising the net schedule. Last year Kenny took the initiative to organise coaching clinics for the juniors this season. He once again continued that and the feedback was great, the juniors appreciated the session and the Bulls involvement.

I need to right a wrong that I unforgivably glazed over during the Annual Dinner/Presentation night. In scheduling and running the night I unfortunately neglected to acknowledge the new appointment of a life member to our club for season 12/13. Kenny has been a devoted member of the EDCC and many past members will remember Kenny or Higgsey as he is known to them and everyone one of them will undoubtedly understand the clubs decision to appoint him as life member. Sorry Kenny for not making it public at our dinner. I know it was a moment that was important to you and I apologise for not acknowledging it on the night. That said you have been an integral part of our club and the future members of our club know and appreciate your support and effort you give to our club. A deserved recipient of Life Membership of the Epping District Cricket club.

Unfortunately we lost a few more members of the Epping alumni this year in Jim Avery and Life Member Barry Williams. Jim was a regular visitor to Epping Oval and in my early days at the club always wondered who that man was regularly attending the oval watching the Bulls. Although I did not play or know both Jim and Barry personally our thoughts go out to their families and they will be missed by them and their Epping cricket teammates

It has been a big drive of the club and me personally to strengthen the grass roots of Epping Cricket. This year saw the senior club help run the Have A Go program on Friday nights. Over 60 kids turned our each and every week to run around and hit, throw and generally cause Kenny to pull his thinning hair out. A big thank you must go to Mark Henning the Juniors President for allowing the Bulls to get involved on the Have A Go program and to Gerard Meares for co-ordinating the program. Each week Bulls members gave up their time to help coach and teach the kids the basic skills of cricket. The season was a success and it is due to the support of the Bulls that this program will continue to grow and our club will also continue to grow and be strong.

We also took a big initiative this year to get the Bulls members to assist the juniors in a coaching role. Many guys put their hands up and the feedback was fantastic and all the parents and kids greatly appreciated the efforts of each and every Bulls member.

Mitch Healey and Kenny Wilcox took the under 14s to a Premiership. Mick McKeough and Brad Morgan the other under 14’s team. Naji Haider under 13’s, I was involved in the under 12’s, Tom Dangerfield, Matt Wilkins, James Allsopp and Luke Collins the under 11’s and Mat Hodgins under 10’s. Thanks guys for your efforts and being the face of our club to these young boys. You do yourselves and our club proud and I know the kids look up to you all. Four our senior club to be strong our junior base needs to be strong and we are doing everything in our power to make Epping Juniors the strongest club in the district.

In a final acknowledgment I would like to thank this year’s sponsors. Hannapak, Bendigo Bank Nth Epping, HSA Landscapes and Fabish Logistics for the support of the club. Without their support we could not keep our every increasing playing cost down and make playing cricket on turf more pleasurable to the hip pocket.

Our goal once again this season was to make the top six in the club championship and have all the teams in the semi-finals. We achieved 4 out of the 6, a fantastic effort by whole club and everyone involved. I said it last year there’s a Bulls culture that is present and growing. The Burwood game and the Turnbull Richardson Cup success, the associated success of 1st, 2nd grade and under 24’s is what is driving that culture. I have always stated “Success breeds success”. We are taking small steps to making Epping a powerhouse in the Shires competition and what’s more the culture is well and truly alive and growing.

The season ahead sees the retirement of some old heads and advancement of a few 1st grade players to the grade scene. Good luck and remember once a Bull always a Bull. To the rest of the Bulls, the season will be harder than previous years but the young group of player advancing through the club is what holds us in good stead. I am confident we will be strong and senior players will step up and guide the young Bulls and take us forward to a great 2013/14 season

I want to thank all the players and the committee for their support of me as President. The one thing I have become accustom to in this club is the support and unwavering mateship that exists. This is a great club and I am proud to lead The Epping Bulls Cricket Club into a strong and successful future.

OBITUARY – Barry Williams & Jim Avery

Older members and followers of the Club were saddened to find that two of our finest former players/administrators passed away during the 2012-2013 season.

BARRY WILLIAMS Barry Williams, with 730 wickets sits high on the club’s list of wicket takers in an Epping career which spanned the period from 1964 to 1983 … undoubtedly one of our most consistent wicket takers averaging more than 40 wickets per season. In 1965-6, his 70 wickets was one of the highlights of our second (B) grade premiership season.

From the start of his career, he took new ball as a justified matter of right and regularly had control of one end of play at least until the first drinks break, and frequently until tea. He was rarely collared by any batsman, as his economy rate of 2.6 per over will attest (and keep in mind, until the late of 1970’s we bowled 8 ball overs). The only indication of fatigue or soreness from his efforts was the occasionally liberal applications of Dencorub on tired muscles which pervaded the Epping dressing rooms to let us all know that “Swing” (aka “Big Fella”) was in good form.

Off field, Swing was introduced to the role of Hon Secretary in his second season with the club, later served as Hon. Treasurer, and was the recorder of all of our statistics, (a role he took over from Ray Rowell who established the standard of our recording) from the time he became Hon Secretary.

Barry’s career with the club was more than significant and although he spent the later years of his life back in his original home city of Newcastle, we were reminded from time to time of his following our results with continued interest.

JIM AVERY After a long battle with illness, the Club’s most productive wicketkeeper, Jim Avery, died late in 2012, just after our season commenced.

Jim’s career with the club extended from 1972 until 1992, during which time he played in every grade, and contributed in his own quiet way to the performances of each team. He was not one of those keepers who added to a batsman’s discomfort with backchat, but was forever a “presence” as one of the most effective catchers and stumpers in my memory.

His activities as a club member not only included his role on the management committee over a number of seasons, but included the contribution of his daughters’ School of Dance Studios as a committee room.

Jim’s commitment to his cricket was exemplary … he was known to have travelled from his second sporting love of skiing not to miss a game, and once travelled overnight by coach from the Gold Coast for his game of cricket. He never let a team down by absence. Some of our present ‘casuals’ should learn from this.

Jim holds the club record for over 300 dismissals as a wicketkeeper … his batting fell well short of his keeping ability, and he could claim No 11 without looking at the order in the scorebook … nevertheless, his batting in the 3rd(C) grade final in 1973-4 season was a major effort in our eventual premiership. Going in at a match losing 9- 120, Jim blocked the Auburn bowlers to despair as he and Barry Elliot added almost 50 in about 2 hours to give us a total which our then leg weary opponents could not match, particularly when we were able to make them bat at the end of the first day.

His tenacity in that innings typified the man, and the fighting attitude he showed later in life towards an illness which eventually took his life.

The Clubs extends its condolences to the families of both Barry Williams and Jim Avery in their respective losses.

TREASURER’S REPORT

For the 2012-13 Season

Financial Performance For the Year to 30th April 2013 Epping District Cricket Club Inc (The Club) returned a loss of $3,427.70.

Financial Position Members’ Funds stands at $19,861 as at 30th April 2013.

Remarks Cash at Bank as at 30 April 2013 stood at $13,191.00.

Receivables as at Balance Date include $1.840 of Member Subscriptions ($90 paid since Balance Date) that the Committee believes are readily collectable. Accounts Receivable also reflects Cricket NSW grant of $4,830 (received 27 June 2013).

As at Balance Date, there were no Accrued Expenses. It should be noted though the Club was at that time yet to receive an invoice for Sunday Ground Hire. Invoice for $5820 has subsequently been received and paid.

This season, revenues were impacted by a drop in sponsorship as a number of prior season sponsors did not renew. In addition, your Management Committee decided to invest in new covers for North Epping Oval and to purchase a storage container for them. Consequently, the accounts show a loss for this year. Without that one off purchase, your Club would have gone close to breakeven for the year.

The Club maintains both player injury insurance and third party liability insurance. The former is by participation in a national scheme arranged by Cricket Australia. From this year the annual premium was met by your Club. The third party insurance is arranged by CricketNSW to Clubs however does carry a $1000 excess per claim. The Management Committee believes sufficient cash reserves exist to cover this contingency.

EPPING BULLS COACH’S REPORT 2012/13

Season 2012-13 started with high hopes and expectations on the back of the previous seasons results. We knew a lot of hard work would be required to continue with the success of the previous season.

For the first time we introduced specific pre-season fitness sessions. These were reasonably attended and supported. While the sessions were tough, I think the players that regularly attended felt the benefits leading into

14 Epping District Cricket Club Inc. www.eppingbulls.com.au the season. The focus was on core strength and dynamic movements. We will run these sessions again leading into season 2013-14 and hope we get a few more players along.

My key slogan for this year was Purposeful Preparation Prevents Poor Performance. I challenged players to think about training and attend with a purpose of what they wanted to work on. Too often we roll up to training, have a hit, have a bowl and catch a few balls, without really achieving anything. I continue to challenge you to turn up to training with a purpose – what do you want to get out of this session? Being specific about your training will help you prepare better and hopefully help you to execute come game day.

I challenged players to fill out goal sheets. This probably has been the most disappointing aspect of my two seasons as coach with the lack of response to this request. What encourages me however is working with the players that have taken the time to fill out goal sheets and see them achieve them throughout the season. At the mid season review quite a few little milestone goals had been achieved. Again this ties into my theme of being ‘purposeful’ with our preparation. Setting goals and putting them on paper creates a sense of purpose about what you want to achieve for the season.

This season we had 15 century makers up from 8 the previous season. I commented in last years report that 8 was an improvement and it is great to see we have significantly improved again this year. It highlights that we are becoming mentally tougher and not satisfied with ‘nice’ scores. Scoring centuries has become normal around the club and not a rare event. That is a huge attitude shift and something I hope continues.

The Bulls finished 6th in the Club Championships largely on the back of 1st Grade finishing 4th and 2nd Grade Minor Premiers at the completion of the normal rounds. We were only 5 points away from moving past Lane Cove into 5th spot. While we did not improve position wise our overall points in the Club Championship of 874 was up from 794 the previous season. This is another positive aspect as a club of how we improved on last year’s results.

Another first for the club was securing the Turnball Richardson cup from Burwood. Considering this was against the eventual Club Champions for 2012-13 who also won Premierships in 3 out of 4 grades, makes this achievement even more remarkable. It was great to see the passion and pride from everyone in the club as we celebrated the win together. Let’ s hope it’s the first of many!

Congratulations to 2nd Grade on taking out the Minor Premiership. To be the most consistent team throughout the year is a huge achievement. It was tough to see them bow out in the Semi and hope they can go one better next season. 1st Grade carried the hopes of the Bulls to win an elusive Premiership. It was not to be however going down narrowly to Burwood.

If I could pick out one individual performance for the season it would be the bowling display by Anthony Boorer on Day 2 of the Grand Final, which was simply inspirational. AB is the Heart & Soul of this club and gave everything on the field finishing with 5 wickets. Pure grit and determination carried AB on, along with a few chants of support from the sideline. His ‘never give up’ performance displayed all the traits and characteristics we want to see in all Bulls players. Hopefully a few of the younger Bulls sitting on the sideline watching that day were inspired and learnt what it means to truly be a ‘Bull’!

Finally I would like to extend thanks to Kenny Wilcox for his assistance as Training Coordinator. His passion for the club is unmatched. You can take a lot of credit for the success of the club Kenny because training is run so well and you strive to achieve a level of intensity to match game situations with your scheduling of batters and bowlers. It can be a thankless task, but from myself and on behalf of the players Kenny – thank you.

Let keep working hard together and build towards bigger and better things for the Bulls in season 2013-14. Hoss

Annual Report Season 2012-13 15

1ST GRADE TEAM REPORT

For Epping Bulls First Grade the season finished with us just two balls from the ultimate prize.. It was by this narrow margin that we fell short in the Grand Final, as Burwood Briars crept past our score to win a thrilling game by two wickets. There is no more hollow feeling in competitive sport than losing a close grand final and it is no exaggeration to say the team was shattered. However, with time comes reflection, and upon reflection, season 2012/13 was one for the Bulls to be proud of. We showed the ability to win matches under all conditions, in a variety of circumstances and without being reliant on just one or two key players.

As during any season of cricket there were highs and lows and 2012/13 was no exception, our low was the virtual humiliation at the hands of Burwood in the 20/20 where we fielded an unavailability afflicted team went down without a whimper. There is more competition for the high, but I’d have to plump for the outright defeat of Auburn at George Parry Oval in the Quarter Final. In between these extremes there was the incredible fight back to beat Penno by 2 runs amidst the ‘passengergate’ issue, beating Burwood to help secure the Turnbull Richardson Cup and an underrated win against Souths when were on the wrong end of the conditions with both bat and ball, and had every reason to throw up our hands and say it wasn’t our day. Instead we dug deep, won and secured a vital six points. Yes, there were days we didn’t fire, but the most pleasing thing about the season was the fact that as a team we didn’t hide from addressing what happened on these days and then went about doing it better next time.

The Players

Michael McKeough Macca came of age of a First Grade batsman during the season, and was responsible for getting us away to many solid starts. Began the year with a heartbreaking 99 but wasn’t to be denied, and reached the magic three figures against North West Sydney. Macca’s positive stroke play was complemented by improved shot selection and concentration this season. Combined with his ability to take wickets with lively seam bowling, and his sneaky fines investigations meant he was a great all-round package who deservedly won the Dave Gilbert Medal.

Mitchell Horrocks Mitch is an extremely talented cricketer whose shot making ability is equal to that of the very best players in the competition. He demonstrated these shots to great effect during a blistering 90 against the all-conquering Auburn attack that gave us a chance of an unlikely outright win. At this point of the season Mitch was threatening to dominate, but after a midseason overseas sojourn he found it hard to pick up where he’d left off. Despite this he remained a key player in our team who set a positive tone for the rest of the order. A very safe fieldsman and useful offie Mitch is looking to push on into grade cricket next season.

Chris Nutt Nutty began the season opening the batting before moving into the number four slot and flourishing. Two tremendous counter attacking centuries when the team was in trouble, were undoubted highlights as was his brilliant slip catching. Nutty’s wholehearted, determined approach to the game always ensured that the opposition knew they were in a contest. His quality mid week pitch reconnaissance reports were always appreciated.

Pascal de l’Epine Pas returned to the Bulls this season and quickly settled into his work. A sweet timer of the ball particularly through the off side, Pas played a number of important innings throughout the season, none more so than his Semi Final knock against Lindfield, which deserved a century. Pas brings intensity to the team’s fielding effort and is a guy that can be relied on to be still pushing himself in the last over of the day. He has a good cricket mind and is always thinking about how to improve his and the team’s game.

David Hossack New ball bowler, middle order bat and the team’s ‘Minister for Communication with the Opposition’, Hoss performed all his roles with enthusiasm. He rarely failed to make an early breakthrough and could always be relied on to test the top order’s technique and resilience. His arrival at the crease with bat always lifted the tempo and he contributed to a number of useful partnerships. Hoss’ fielding was often inspirational, and while most of tactical suggestions involved him returning to, or continuing to bowl he was a great hard head to have as a confidant. Dave was a worthy recipient of the Cricketer of the Year award and did a fine job as club coach.

16 Epping District Cricket Club Inc. www.eppingbulls.com.au

Steve Commans Commo was a newcomer to the Bulls and endured a disrupted early season due to his wedding. Once he overcame these setbacks and was able to play week in week out he soon established himself as an important cog in the team. Another of our all-rounders Commo is an attacking middle order bat who takes the game to the opposition, and an economical and accurate off spinner who was particularly useful in our limited overs matches (when arriving on time) where his ability to bowl to a field was invaluable. Commo formed a lethal combination with Nutty in the slips cordon, taking some memorable snares. His innings in the final was I am sure, just a sign of what is come next season.

Stephen Sharp Not many 21 year old off spinners are entrenched as a team’s front line spinner but that is the position Sharpy carried off with some panache. Quite an attacking tweaker who rips the ball and gives it some flight, he suffered at times through misfortune and the scourge of modern day bowlers: the railway sleeper bat. Despite these travails he was always a go to bowler who genuinely troubled even the best players in the comp. Sharpy made some invaluable runs during the season particularly during the finals and he should continue to try and develop a batter’s mind set as he has the ability be a genuine all-rounder.

Joe Barnes Barnsey joined as from the north of England as retribution for his club having had put up with Macca the previous season. He forced his way into the top grade just prior to Christmas and his tidy keeping ensured he retained his position for the rest of the season. Barnsey is a competitor whose effort levels and enthusiasm always remain high. We didn’t get to see a lot of his batting but when the opportunity arose he showed impressive positive intent and a willingness to play for the team.

Anthony Boorer As the team’s ‘Public Relations Officer’ and Mr Reliable with the ball AB had a vital role and he performed it wonderfully. Proved himself as an all time great Bull with a remarkable spell in the GF that all but bowled us to victory, and was a guy that as a captain, I loved to look around the field and see, knowing he was ready to put in no matter the circumstances or conditions. AB’s batting oozes determination and the time he spent at the crease during the semi final was invaluable in setting up our win. A great club man, he did more than his fair share of covering and any number of other jobs that needed doing.

Ben Eves On his day Evesy is a devastating strike bowler who can run through an opposition with ease. He produced some superb spells during the season, such as against Burwood and in the Quarter Final and was definitely our bowling spearhead. Unfortunately Evesy had a tough season with injury missing a number of games and his absence was keenly felt on those occasions. He has a great pair of hands close to the wicket and claimed a sensational catch against Roseville.

Al Tay Al bowled steadily throughout the season without quite reaching getting the big haul he wanted. His spells against Penno and Macquarie Uni were big factors in our victories and he was unlucky to be the one who missed out when it came to balancing the team prior to finals. A great clubman, it was no surprise that he took this on the chin and gave his all in the Second grade finals campaign. Al will be greatly missed upon his departure to Darwin.

To all the other Bulls who played First grade during the season, thank you for your efforts, I am sure there will be further opportunities next season. Well done to the other captains on your great work during the season and a particularly congratulations to Morgs on the Minor Premiership. Thank you to the committee, the team for all your support and our supporters, we nearly got there! As with each annual report I’ve written, I must give an extra thank you to Rowdy for his tremendous assistance with all the logistics of running a team. A mention too, for President Matt Boorer for the great direction we are heading in as a club, the Bulls of 2013 are lucky to have your hands on the reins. It has been an honour to once again to captain this fine club and I thank the club for the opportunity.

Annual Report Season 2012-13 19

2ND GRADE TEAM REPORT

2nd Grade’s season this year will be known as the one that got away.

After making the top six last year our target was top four. After being one win from three games it wasn’t the ideal start, but after a solid win against Auburn in round 4, and a demolition outright win against Mac Uni, it started to turn around. We then took on Southern Districts with a game that we definitely should have won with our batting letting us down and we lost.

The turning point of our season was definitely round 7 against Burwood, beating them very comfortably. It was at this moment we seriously started to believe. The second half of the year saw us win every game in the normal rounds. We were on top and crowned minor premiers, which was a great achievement.

After happily smashing Penno in the quarter finals we came up against Burwood but just couldn’t get there on the second day. It was shattering at the time but it’s a great sign that 2nd Grade now has the belief and certainly the stock to go all the way next year.

Pat Tay – Patty Tay took out the Gavin Robinson Medal this year. Being very consistent with the ball, Patty always backing himself, taking wickets at crucial times and chipping in with the bat down the order when needed. Patty spent last year in 3rd Grade and when was asked to step up, he stepped up and was great to see him enjoy his cricket, lift and do well for me and the team, like we knew he was capable of.

Mark Bruce – The Cornerstone of this team. Anything asked of Brucey he’ll have a crack. Having a fairly consistent year with the bat, but getting a lot of scores in the thirties and not going on with it found Brucey having regular blow-ups, which were always entertaining watching those little fingers fluttering. A great bloke to have in field, and also in the batting order after a shaky start.

Matthew Wilkins – Wilko came to 2nd Grade on the back of a very good debut season for the Bulls in 4th Grade last year. But in his words, he was keen to make new memories and that certainly showed. The first half of the season saw Wilko get a few starts but no going on with it, then the second half saw all that hard work pay off with Wilko hitting big scores consistently and also top scored in the semi-final with a seventy, holding our innings together.

Chris Steffan – Steffo stepped up massively with the ball this year and was great for myself and the team. Chris had a very consistent season with the ball being the top wicket taker in the club. But no records were broken with the ball, for it was bat in hand that had every reason for us to check the record books for someone having a full season without scoring a run. Having said that, Chris is certainly not the worst bat and when he finds as much confidence as he does when he’s in a battle with a batsman or scoring, the runs will come. Chris should see himself with Wilko pushing for 1st Grade in the near future, and if we can keep these guys around the club the future looks positive for the Bulls.

Mark Fonseka – Fonzy was a new player this year and a great pick up for 2nd Grade and the club. Fonzy probably didn’t get the amount of runs he would have liked, with a few big scores against Auburn and Mac Uni. Fonzy always put the team first and did what needed to be done even if it meant scoring with Chris Steffan. Always being positive and good in the field, going on with some of those starts will see Fonz rack up some big scores next season.

Shakti Baveja – Shak had another very solid season this year. He bowled well all season but at times without luck. Shakti’s a quiet achiever and doesn’t say much, but when he does it’s very insightful, especially what the captain heard him say after hitting a six to bring up his hundred against Penno. If Shakti can be a bit more consistent with the bat he’ll have a great season with Shakti again scoring a fifty and a hundred and with him scoring 260 runs for the season.

Mitchell Healey – Heals started the season on fire with a big score against against Lindfield in round 1 and an 80odd against Mac Uni in round 5. After that Heals couldn’t quite get back to where he was as hard as he tried. He’s very talented with the bat and has goods hands, and when he builds on such a good start we will see him score some big runs in the future and hopefully next season.

20 Epping District Cricket Club Inc. www.eppingbulls.com.au

Thomas Dangerfield – The silent grub started his season in 3rd Grade, and after a hundred and a sixty saw himself rise to 2nd Grade. Danger got a lot of consistent starts and a couple of scores in the sixties when the team really needed it, but frustratingly couldn’t go on with more big scores. Danger’s also very solid in the field, taking the most catches; you can put Danger anywhere in the field and he won’t disappoint. But there’s only one spot you can put him in the bloody batting order!

Nick Cox – Ah Nicholas Cox! Coxy came to 2nd Grade halfway through the season as a batsman. Three things Coxy loves more than anything in the world: scoring thirties, stopping balls and taking the piss out of the captain. Coxy was very consistent with the bat this year scoring a lot in the thirties and just not going on with it. Then finally towards the end of the year he hit a sixty-odd not-out off 144, and a very good fifty in the semi-final. If Coxy can string some big scores together, next year will see a big one for him. Coxy also stopped the ball well.

Timothy Hood – Timmy could only play five games with us in 2nd Grade this season because of commitments to things outside cricket: 1st Grade and 4th Grade. Timmy joined us in round 4 and smashed a record breaking 182, one of the best knocks witnessed in recent times. Timmy batted well for us in the lower half of the season and the finals, although I recommend he works on his running between wickets. Timmy also proved himself as a bowler, bowling the best spell in the finals series.

Anthony Boorer – Great to have AB in 2nd Grade and although it was only for a short time he contributed massively in those games. He took eight wickets for the game in an outright win against Mac Uni and was never scared of firing up against anyone especially Penno.

Luke Collins – Another young man who really stood up this year. After some big scores in 3rd Grade he made his way back in to 2nd Grade to bat; but it was his bowling that showed massive improvement and will see Luke have a big season in 2nd Grade with bat and ball next season.

Joseph Barnes – Barnesy played with 2nd Grade for the first half of the year until he received the call up to 1st Grade. Coming over from England, he was told he’s keeping and did a very good job behind the stumps. And, as always, keen for a shower in front of everyone… although you would if you were him.

Lewis Roper – Ropes came over from another Shires club… that we won’t mention. He showed glimpses of what he can do with the bat and ball, with a good performance against Auburn and Penno. Sadly he couldn’t play more cricket this season but hopefully back next season.

I’d also like to thank Dylan Munro, Kulwant Dhillon, Sam Brewer, Nick Scollay, Alex Tay, James Papworth, Justin Bradley and Dinith Armarasignhe for all their contributions this year. Also for Coat and the committee for all the hard work that they do. Our club coaches Hoss and Kenny for their work in the nets, and finally Tim Creer and the other selectors.

It’s been an honour to captain 2nd Grade this year and I believe with the team we have and the depth in the club we can go one further next year and take out the title.

Cheers, Morgs

3RD GRADE TEAM REPORT

During Bulls preseason the list of possible third grade players looked impressive enough. Unfortunately, we realised after round one our success ultimately depended on the availability and commitment of these players. The issue of player availability told the story for third grade, whilst 1st and 2nd grade had the luxury of picking the best, 3s and 4s had to deal with what was left. Much of the time this was inexperience and to put it bluntly, lacking the required quality. With a full squad to choose from we were able to field a very useful side, more than capable of pushing for a finals position. As the season panned out however we were unable to win two or three close games and in three or four others we were undermanned.

In cricket you rely on the commitment and dedication of eleven players. Success is not built on the efforts of one or two alone. In short you aren’t willing to commit to a whole season of Saturday cricket then perhaps you should be playing park or indoor cricket. It’s particularly unpleasant trying to track down players and confront opposition teams with a group of boys out of their depth. Losing two games outright was unacceptable, and the two losses against Lindfield and Georges River were some of my least enjoyable of cricketing experiences.

As challenging as the season was, there were a few team highlights and impressive individual performances.

Two fresh faced Bulls, Daniel and Dylan Munro were both consistent and committed cricketers. Daniel is a whole hearted contributor with ball and showed plenty of potential with the bat. Daniel’s brother Dylan played a handful of games in 2nd grade and when required in 3s looked assured and capable of scoring heavily. Unfortunately he couldn’t nudge his way past thirty, though he consistently built partnerships, strengthened the middle order and did some tidy work behind the stumps.

Justin Bradley improved as the season progressed and finished as our ‘go to man’ with the ball, deservedly taking out the player’s award.

We had some impressive guest appearances from a host of Bulls, Nic Wilson played two games mid-season, smashing a century, seventy odd and taking some vital catches in the cordon (all on one good leg).

Luke Collins hit a ton and a fifty whilst Tom Dangerfield dominated Warringah with an unbeaten century and followed up with a half century against Pennant Hills.

After a difficult start in 2nd grade Nick Scollay joined 3s and responded immediately. Striking an aggressive half century against Mac Uni, 145 against Southern Districts and a quick fire ton at South Sydney.

After a disappointing pair in round one, Kulwant Dhillon proved to be a consistent contributor with the bat and more frustratingly in the field with constant ‘mutterings’ from his position in the gully.

A dazzling cameo in the 20/20 match from Brett Papworth was another highlight; single handedly spanking a competition leading Briars attack to all parts of Rothwell Oval.

Our season as a whole could be divided into two parts, the first dogged by unavailability’s resulted in two very poor results and some inconsistent team performances. The second, where we had a full squad of players revealed a side more than capable of competing with the strongest in 3rd grade.

In raw terms by round 14 we had used thirty four players, won six games, drew three and lost five. In two of those matches we fell just short of securing outright points and two others were narrow losses. An improvement on the previous season though well short of where we should have been.

These factors made season 2011/12 both disappointing and frustrating in equal measure. As individuals and a club it is vital we draw a line in the sand. If we aspire to build a club like a Burwood or Strathfield, competing for and winning trophies, we must assemble a group of committed, dedicated and passionate cricketers.

In spite of these frustrations there were some positives, with a new breed of young Bulls emerging and some more experienced ones achieving impressive personal milestones.

4TH GRADE TEAM REPORT

The 2012/13 season was an enjoyable yet disappointing season for fourth grade. We ended up equal ninth on the ladder, (11th overall) and really could have been finals contenders had some things gone our way. The main problem that cruelled us throughout the season was the lack of available players. Whenever it seemed we were about to make some headway, the upper grades were short, and we felt the pain.

However, we cannot blame our woes solely on the above fact. We also squandered a number of opportunities when victory could have been ours. Auburn was the game that got away as we were rolled late on the first day. In our game against Norwest we ‘caught’ a bad case of the dropseys, grassing over 12 catches. (I lost count after 12). Instead of chasing 150 we ended up trying to chase down 260 and were never in the running. Now for the good news. Fourth grade remained undefeated at home, which was a great achievement. Further, whenever we had a strong side we usually won comfortably. Even though we did not make the top six, the team enjoyed our cricket at all times.

As captain I was very proud of how we played the game, which was reflected in our high score for ‘Spirit of Cricket’. Thanks to everyone who was part of 4th grade Epping in season 2012/13.

Team highlights; there were some fantastic victories in the season. A memorable victory against Mac Uni, when we nearly achieved three centuries in the one innings. Unfortunately, someone fell cruelly short on 96. Comprehensive wins against Pennant Hills and South Sydney, and a remarkable tie against Roseville. A game which no one who played is likely to forget. A day of cricket which had more twists and turns than Galston Gorge.

Individual highlights; Matt Hodgins first century for the club, a terrific 128 against Pennant Hills; centuries to Brett Papworth and Tim Hood; Allard’s five for against Mac Uni: The President’s four fifties and Brendan Sedgers great spell against Roseville.

Areas of improvement; we need to take our catches; it is as simple as that.

We had well over 30 players who made an appearance in fourth grade this season. Thanks to everyone who played and gave their time to be part of the team. It was greatly appreciated. The nucleus of the team is shown below.

Matt Hodgins : Hodgo started the season with a century but was not able to emulate this feat later in the season. However, he had some good starts and was always there for the team.

James Allsopp : James’ keeping was excellent at times. James, you may need to holster the pull shot.

Stephen Allard : Stephen was the well deserved winner of the 4th grade player of the year award. Stephen bowled some excellent spells and constantly beat the bat. He could easily have taken 40 wickets this season with a bit more luck.

Matt Boorer : When the President’s batting fired, fourth grade fired. When he didn’t…we were shot ducks. Unfortunately the president could not turn any of his four fifties into a hundred. However, now he has become a MAMIL, next season he may have the stamina to go all the way.

James Howes : The cricketing gods did not smile on one J.C. Howes this season. Dropped catches, hitting the stumps only to hear the cry ‘no ball’ and various other horrors beset the young fruiterer. His figures do not show how well he really bowled.

Sushant Garg : Sush always gave plenty to the team. It probably did not help that he was working night shift and barely had a wink of sleep before arriving at the ground.

Ammar Tanveer : Ammar played the first half of the season with us, bringing up his maiden fourth grade fifty against Auburn.

Andrew Nicoletti : The Egyptian accountant played some memorable innings this season, none better than his 96 against Mac Uni. However, in my mind’s eye I will simply recall a glorious day at Epping Oval, when I handed Nico the ball and he cleaned up the Roseville no 11. Surely now Nico must be the ‘go to man.’

Annual Report Season 2012-13 29

Brendan Sedgers : Brendan had an excellent season with the ball and is improving every year. His spell against Roseville was a match winner. Well, should have been. His catching was outstanding as well. . Greg Bennett : Greg bowled some useful spells, particularly the 3/1 against Southern Districts. Greg also had some good starts with the bat. Possibly time to move up the order?

David Wait, Naji Haider, Sean Thompson and Mitchell Gerdes also played a number of games and contributed to the team.

Honourable mention needs to be made of Tim ‘The Burglar’ Hood and his glorious century against Macquarie University. Brett Papworth also fired of a century in the same game, and Sam Brewer’s contribution against Southern Districts.

Again, thanks to everyone who played with fourth grade in 2012/13. I am looking forward to next season.

5TH GRADE TEAM REPORT

The club took the decision to return to the Tim Creer Cup Competition for our 5th grade side for the 2012/2013 season.

All of the matches were 40 overs a side one day games apart from the 20/20 round when we had played our only “home” match of the season at Epping Oval on the last Saturday before Christmas.

It was a challenging season with 4 different people captaining the side at various times. We did not have a home ground and we played approximately 50% of our matches on Sundays. We saw plenty of Sydney, including 3 trips to Curl Curl and matches at West Hoxton, Bexley, Riverwood, Daceyville and Alexandria.

It must be said that we were uncompetitive in many of the matches. We won only 2 matches for the season and finished a long last in a 16 team competition. We forfeited one match and played several other games with either 8, 9 or 10 players.

We need to look long and hard at our playing depth next season before deciding upon the most appropriate competition for our 5th grade team to play in.

THE PLAYERS

Paul James Paul captained our Masters (Over 40s) side this season and generally played with us on the weekends when the Masters were not playing. He took the most wickets (9) and scored 182 runs at 26. In the match against University Of NSW (the eventual premiers) he batted No. 3 and made 83 in our total score of 127. Paul deservedly won the medal for the 5th grade player of the season.

Sushant Garg Sush played 4 matches with us and scored 239 runs for twice out at an average of 119.50. He made a memorable 137 not out against Lane Cove when we chased down 175 in 33 overs for the loss of only 4 wickets.

Tim O’Donnell Work commitments restricted his appearances this season. He kept wickets quite well early in the season and later on appeared at the bowling crease several times where he showed some promise as a medium pacer. He was disappointing with the bat and kept missing straight balls with predictable results.

Sean Thompson Sean scored some useful runs, including a match winning 26 not out against Mount Pritchard/Southern Districts on a very difficult wicket early in the season. He got some other starts but failed to go on to a big score. He also appeared in a few matches in 4th grade. He needs to be available more regularly as he does have the ability to play higher grades. His leg spin bowling suffered due to lack of opportunity as we rarely made enough runs to give our bowlers a chance to show their wares.

Andrew Finlayson Has his own (very attacking) style with the bat. Made a 50 against Lindfield and a couple of other useful scores but he needs to be more selective with his attacking shots. Good in the field.

Mike Knight Took some wickets in the early matches but struggled with the ball as the season went on. Batted well (generally in the lower order) making several scores over 20 in difficult circumstances.

Naji Haider Captained the side in the second half of the season and did a good job. Played some useful innings but got out early too often. Should have scored more runs as he has the technique and ability to do so.

Annual Report Season 2012-13 33

Played in our Under 14s premiership side this season and looked the part in senior cricket when he played for us after Christmas. He got a start in all the matches he played and he batted the whole 40 overs in making 59 not out against Lane Cove. He can also bowl leg spin and has a good future in the game.

Rick Nehru Also played in our Under 14s premiership side this season and showed promise as a fast bowler when he played for us after Christmas. Didn’t take a lot of wickets but bowled several lively spells.

Ammar Tanveer Played the first half of the season in 4th grade and came into our side just before Christmas. Contributed with both bat and ball but should have done more given his ability.

Ram Bhandarkar Arrived at the club well into the season and only played 4 matches (including one in 3rd grade). An overseas trip restricted his appearances. He took 7 wickets at 9.57 in the 3 matches he played with us and scored a good 33 in the 20/20 match against Balmain Inner Sydney Tigers which almost got us over the line. Has the ability to play in the shires teams next season.

Dhruv Kohli Bowled some useful spells (including taking 3/34 against the eventual premiers, University Of NSW). Struggled with the bat.

There were many other players who appeared in the side during the course of the season. My thanks to everyone who helped out.

Annual Report Season 2012-13 37

FRANK GREY SHIELD U/24’S TEAM REPORT

The 2012/13 season for the Baby Bulls as we are now known, started with the squad being named with the rest of the five grades, on the last Saturday before Round 1 v Lindfield. The idea behind this was to prepare the squad as best we could for the season coming as well as to let players know that the side would be picked from runs/wickets in Saturday cricket. This spurred on a lot of runs/wickets in the early part of the season for the club for many of the boys in the squad, much to the skipper and Mentor Kenny Wilcox’s delight.

A practice game was introduced for the first time with the Frank Gray side to play a President’s XI, which will now continue to be played every year, and be known as the Frank Clarke Cup. Although beaten it was a tremendous learning curve for some of the boys, and is a great concept that will continue for a very long time. Thanks to this game the Bulls got off to a flyer with three convincing bonus point wins against relatively weak opposition. In Round 4 we participated in the clubs first Day/Night fixture against the North West Sydney Hurricanes and were outplayed in that game. This was followed by a similar result against Strathfield.

With two straight losses we faced Burwood on a wicket that was a bit dubious to say the least. After the toss we were sent in, and were soon in trouble with the wicket contributing to the majority of wickets we were bowled out for 82. However we believed that we had a better bowling line up then the Briars and anything they could do we could do better. We had the Briars reeling at 5-44 but could not wrap up the last wickets with them passing our total 6 down, on a wicket that flattened out as the day went on. This was by far our best bowling performance of the year and despite the loss, our self confidence and belief grew immensely.

Due to the three straight losses we needed a bonus point victory against Auburn to cement us in the top six. This is exactly what we produced in a vast improvement and definitely our game of the year to date. In the quarter final we were up against the Hurricanes in a rematch at Bruce Purser Oval. In a game where we could only manage 168 batting first although on a very slow outfield, it was the Burwood loss which gave us confidence to defend a total more than double that game. We did it with the Hurricanes closing their innings at 111 with Dinith Amarasinghe starring with a five fer. However we were undone in the semi final by Warringah, a more experienced side in a game which we probably should have won, but we will definitely be better for the run, and will come back bigger and better next season.

Stephen Sharp (Vice Captain) – Sharpy regained his spot as the 24s top wicket taker this year, bowling some unbelievable spells at time to just suffocate batsmen, until outsmarting them and claiming their wicket. His leadership was also exemplary in not only his communication with the players and the skipper but his actions both on and off the field. Good luck Sharpy trying your hand in grade mate.

Dinith Amarasinghe – Dinners joined 24s half way through the season after being overseas and slotted straight in. Bowling amazing spells with the highlight being his five wicket haul in the quarter final. I am looking forward to seeing Dinners taking over as our strike spinner while playing a full season.

Joe Barnes – Barnesy in his first season in Australia provided the team with a desperate and competitive keeper who hated giving away byes as well as saving many wides throughout the season. His up-beat attitude and work that he did off the field for the team and club should not go unnoticed. His contributed massively to the team camaraderie and will be sourly missed by the Bulls.

Sam Brewer – Sammy showed us just a glimpse of what he is capable of this year with both bat and ball. Due to work commitments he could not play regular Saturday cricket, if he can get some more cricket under his belt next year I am sure we will see him blossom.

Luke Collins – LC, Loose cannon more than anything showed himself not only how good he can be if he can keep working hard with both bat and ball, but how important he is to the team this season. Many consistent performances on Saturdays, I am looking forward to him producing them in 24s.

Thomas Dangerfield – Danger had some consistent performances this year with the bat however like the rest of us could not break the half century. His experience and enthusiasm will be missed by the boys next year as he is now ineligible, but I am sure he will still be around to help us out.

38 Epping District Cricket Club Inc. www.eppingbulls.com.au

Mitch Healey – Heals also like Danger had a consistent year with the bat but not being able to crack the half century. He did top the runs with 193 for the season. Heals is an integral part of the team for the next couple of years and I believe he will make a real stamp on next year’s season.

Mitch Horrocks – Hot Rocks or the Ugandan International, provided great contributions with both bat and ball throughout the year. The highlight being 46 and 4 for in the one game. Also good luck to rocks as he embarks on grade cricket.

James Howes – Howesy bowled very well when required this season and was fantastic around the boys. As little Morgs follows his father’s footsteps I am sure he will be a part of the team more prominently next season.

Daniel Munro – Dan bowled exceptionally when required, highlighted by his 4-13 and was very unlucky to not play more throughout the season. I am very much looking forward to his improvements for next season in not only bowling but his very sound technique with the bat. He was also a tremendous team man over the season.

Dylan Munro – Dyl showed us that he is a batsmen to watch out for next season with his ability to work the ball around the field, highlighted by his crucial runs in the quarter final. With many starts both on Saturdays and Sundays showing us his ability, I believe that will lead to big scores coming his way next season through this experience.

Chris Steffan – Steff brought some added intimidation to the bowling line-up this year with some magnificent opening spells and death bowling. Chris hated getting taken off and would always take that energy into his next spell. Chris will continue to improve with hard work and I am sure will get many wickets next year.

Matthew Wilkins – Wilko didn’t get as many runs in 24s as he would have liked but I am sure that will making him hungrier than ever to succeed next season. Towards the end of the year we developed an opening partnership that I am sure will become even better next year. His bowling provided some handy spells and will be needed more with the departure of Sharpy.

Kenny Wilcox - I would like to make a special mention to Kenny. Kenny’s insights and objective thoughts on the side’s progress and development were invaluable and strongly contributed towards us making the semi final. It was not only on what we can improve on the field as cricketers but off the field as team mates, clubmen and becoming better men in general. Although Kenny will not be mentoring us again next year, it is paramount that we continue to use the knowledge and continue developing the attributes for us to improve both on the field and off it. Thank you to all our supporters that turned up every week, especially to the day nighter where there was upwards of 30 Bulls and Bullettes present.

In the end we had the best season since 2005/06 when we won the Frank gray Shield, and with the experience and self belief we gathered this season, there is no way we should not be holding up the shield in 2013/14. I believe anything else would be an underachievement. So let’s work hard boys physically and mentally and we will produce the goods!!!!!

Come on Bulls!!!!

Did you know…? In Season 1997-98, Ian Wheatley became Epping’s first player to pass 1000 runs in Frank Grey matches.

In our 75 th Anniversary Season of 2007-08, Al Tay became our first player to achieve 50 Frank Gray wickets.

Andrew Smythe represented Epping for 10 consecutive seasons in the Under 24’s. Great effort.
