The city of has always been a competitive breeding ground for new artists and in 2006 yet another talented group emerged from the city. Staff Writer Shemsi Frezel sat down with the band, which consists of five ambitious young guys, Zak, Nick, Jake, John and Philip, who are ready to share their music with as many listeners as possible. Shortly before taking the stage at Rites they sat down for an interview with Versus.

Versus Magazine: Is there any special meaning to the name Blueskyreality? Nick: The band’s name has its origins in a garage band that I started in eighth grade and then senior year of high school, I recruited Zak to play with the band. The name has to do with never knowing the true color of the sky because of the reflection of the ocean.

VM: How would any of you describe the band’s sound and who are some of your musical influences? Zak: It’s soul-rock — rock music that keeps coming back to elements of soul as far as harmonies and melodies. I really love soul singers like Marvin Gaye, Musiq Soul Child, Anthony Hamilton and Brian McKnight — that was the first concert I ever went to, a Brian McKnight concert. We also really love from the ’90s.
