Christ is Risen!

Remembering the Departed To put it simply, we remember those whom we love. Memorials are an act of love. When we love, we can’t help remembering the departed!

Thus, we remember our departed loved ones on the third, ninth and fortieth days and on the anniversaries of their repose. The Church also sets aside a number of Saturdays for general memorials of “All Souls.” The next one will be the Saturday before Pentecost (i.e., June 19 this year).

While Memorial Day was established as a secular holiday in America, set aside specifically for remembering those who perished in the armed forces, it has become more and more a day for remembering all the departed, whether or not they died in battle. We, the Orthodox in America, have espoused the day, and we go to the cemeteries and pray for them on Memorial Day, while we also continue to keep the Church’s own memorial days.

With love in the Risen Christ,

+Fr. Nabil

Raies Murr Scholarship Members in good standing of St. Michael Antiochian Orthodox Church (Van Nuys) or St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral (Los Angeles) and who have been accepted to or are currently enrolled in a publicly supported (not private) institution of higher learning, including eligible publicly supported vocational, technical and trade schools, are eligible to apply for a Raies-Murr Scholarship. Applications can be obtained by e-mailing Mallory Murr and Vanessa Obenhaus at: [email protected]. The applications be returned by July 19, 2021.

Our camping program’s sessions will run from July 18-23 and July 25-30 (both Sunday to Friday). In addition to reducing the number of sessions to two, the following changes are also in effect as a response to the pandemic:

• The maximum number of campers per session is reduced by 50%. • The minimum age for campers will be 13 with the maximum age being those who would have attended their last session a year ago but couldn’t due to the pandemic. • There are additional pandemic related testing, masking and other protocols we will follow as required by the state and local authorities, the Antiochian Archdiocese department of camping, and the American Camping Association.

Enrollment opened on May 17 to an overwhelming response. We are certain we will be filled to this limited capacity very quickly. You can get more information and register at https://www.campstnicholas.com/site/home/.
