Experience Details of Climbers Club Huts & Meets Attended

I have stayed at Helyg and Bob Downes.

Climbing/Mountaineering Experience In the space below please tells us about your climbing/mountaineering experience and any other information relevant to this application for membership. Please remember that Membership is open to any enthusiastic and competent rock-climber or mountaineer who has a good record of leading adventurous climbs. The idea of an adventurous climb is linked to a combination of factors in addition to the grade; for example the length of a climb, availability of protection or its location (e.g. high mountain, remote, inescapable, difficult access or descent). Multi-pitch sports route can be adventurous undertakings e.g. those in the Verdon Gorge or “Wings for Life”.

You should include how long you have been climbing, how often you climb outdoors, which climbing areas you have visited in the last few years and your current leading standard.

We advise you to read all the FAQ’s on the website before you complete this part of the form!

I have been climbing for 16 years. This includes traditional and sports rock climbing, together with ice and mixed winter climbing. In the UK, I climb mainly in Scotland and northern England (due to living near to Edinburgh), with trips further south e.g. to the Lake District, Peak District and Wales. I also have regular climbing trips abroad, e.g. to Costa Blanca, Majorca, Sardinia and Kalymnos, and various French regions such as Burgundy, Cotes du Rhone, Languedoc, Provence. The foreign trips are mainly sports climbing but this usually involves long multi-pitch routes where possible.

I was a committee member and Meets Secretary of the XYZ climbing club from 2006 to November 2011 and have been a member of the club for the past 15 years.

My lead climbing grade is up to around VS trad, 5c sport and grade III/IV in winter. I have climbed many multi-pitch mountain routes including routes in remote settings.

I also enjoy ski mountaineering and have ski toured in Scotland and abroad. I go sea kayaking and have paddled at venues around the coast of Skye and sections of the West and North West coasts of Scotland and Handa Island. I have recently acquired a bouldering mat for use between climbing seasons.

I have some friends and climbing partners who are members of the Climbers’ Club and I would like the opportunity to meet other like-minded and enthusiastic climbers. The majority of my climbing has been in Scotland and north England, but I would like to do more climbing further south, particularly in Cornwall and Wales. I think joining the Climbers’ Club would be a great way to help me do these things.

Venues and some of my most memorable routes are listed below. Most of the climbs are multi-pitch mountain routes. I have included route length for some of the longer climbs to illustrate the nature of the climbing.

Some instructional trips with ISM, ice climbing in Chamonix, Cogne, and Kandersteg. I much prefer going out climbing with friends if possible, but in my early days of winter climbing, after much time spent looking for Scottish ice, I decided to try a different approach to increase my ice climbing experience. These trips with ISM gave me many metres of good quality ice and personal instruction which I've put to good use when going out on my own since and climbing the ice routes I've listed.
