Recently, this tournament has become the premier chess competition in North America, and this year hosted one of the strongest chess tournaments in recent chess history. In fact, over this last summer, our family had a vacation in St. Louis, which happened to overlap with the 2015 Sinquefield Cup! Not wanting to miss out, we managed to go inside the club. On the bottom floor, there were multiple chess enthusiasts watching commentators analyze the chess games on a live video stream transmitted via the internet. Now, where were those games being played? We decided to go up to the next floor, and --- voila--- we saw the best chess players in the entire world, all in a room, silently playing one another. (This floor had a strict no-talking policy, and I nearly got kicked out for chatting with my brother.) There were the current and former world chess champions, and , and possibly one or more future world champions! It was a sight to see, and even though I did not understand what was going on in most of the games, standing so close to world champions made it all worth it. If you are a Memorial student who is interested in chess, I would highly suggest making the pilgrimage to St. Louis. It’s only about six hours away by car and it is a great experience. There is always something or the other going on, and more details can be found on the website: http://saintlouischessclub.org/ events. You can also join Memorial’s own chess club run by Mr. King, which is at room 756 during lunch.
