Listen to this voice, everyone. Listen to it shimmer and float, hear the way it can soar on the wings of an orchestra or whisper intimately in your ear. Notice the lyrical phrasing, the bravura shifts of emotion and color, the breathtaking delicacy, the depth of feeling. This magical voice belongs, of course, to my friend and musical muse, Liz Callaway. And this definitive album, which spans thirty years of her stunning career in musical theater, concert performance and recording, demonstrates the many reasons she’s beloved by all the composers and lyricists whose work she sings, and by the audiences who get to experience her on recordings and onstage. Liz is an unparalleled interpreter of words and music, a performer who unfailingly brings out the very best a song has to offer. She makes it her own, but somehow manages to make you feel as if she’s singing it only for you. I’m honored to be in the company of the songwriters represented here. Lucky us, to have the great Liz Callaway giving voice to our work. In a cluttered universe of CDs, all clamoring for attention, The Essential Liz Callaway lives up to its name—essential listening that captures the essence of this extraordinary singer. —Lynn Ahrens Lynn Ahrens is the Tony Award-winning lyricist of Ragtime and received two Oscar nominations for Anastasia. 1. The Story Goes On (from Baby) WHAT IS ESSENTIAL? Well, in the case of these recordings, they are essential to me as they all represent hugely meaningful experiences in my career, either onstage or in the recording studio. Opportunities that were particularly exciting, challenging, or just plain fun! Some of these songs I’ve been singing since I was 18, others I met along the way, and a few are more recent discoveries. It was a daunting task narrowing down over 30 years of music to just 18 songs. I think I’m going to need a volume 2. I hope you enjoy it! xoxo Liz WITH GRATITUDE... So many people contributed to the making of this album, and I am deeply grateful to them all: My longtime musical director and pianist Alex Rybeck for his incredible artistry and friendship through the years. All the wonderful musicians I’ve had the privilege to sing with in my career, with special thanks to Jered Egan and Ron Tierno. The many gifted orchestrators for their beautiful work, especially Larry Moore. And of course all the composers and lyricists. There are so many others: Tommy Krasker, Philip Chaffin, James Valcq, John Alley, Lauren Mayer, Bernie Fershpan, Isaac Hurwitz, Playwrights Horizons, Traci Werbel, Vinnie Cirilli, Bart Migal, Pete Millrose, Cynthia Daniels, Joel A. Martin, Jeremiah Downes, Kari Strand, Mark Sendroff, Marilyn Rosen, everyone at BRS/Gage as well as Didier Deutsch, Sean Flahaven, Scott Farthing, and Tom Cavanaugh for their kindness and help. And all my fans and friends on Facebook and Twitter for their support over the years, as well as their excellent song suggestions! Special thanks to Lynn Ahrens, Robbie Rozelle, Robert L. Smith, Bill Westmoreland, and Michael Agostino and for their invaluable contributions to this album. Thanks to my family: my beloved Mom, my Dad (who I know is cheering me on from above,) my sister Ann, whose advice and support were invaluable, and of course, Lennie. And to my husband Dan and my son Nicholas, I can’t thank them enough for their infinite love and help with this project. Finally, I owe much of the success in my career to the people who took a chance on me when I was starting out. I am forever grateful to the late, great Buddy Barnes and Brian Lasser, to Phil Adelman, Steven Unger and The Gage Group, Joanna Merlin, Stephen Sondheim, Hal Prince, Richard Maltby Jr. and David Shire.
