UT Permian Basin Football Head Coach Justin Carrigan has “It’s huge being able to start the year at home,” said spent his time at UT Permian Basin building the confidence Carrigan. “Having traveled last year to start the season, of his young program. He plans to see that confidence play it’s a good chance to build momentum at the beginning out on the field this season. The Falcons had arguably its of the year before we start conference play on the road at most competitive season in 2018, picking up its first Lone MSU .” Star Conference home victory against Western New Mexico and homecoming win against Humboldt State. Another key to the 2019 season is Taylor Null. He took the field as a Falcon last season as a true freshman “I think the biggest thing for us is to believe. As close as and solidified his spot as the starter after his first game. we were in a lot of games last season against top-level He threw for 300 yards and two touchdowns against MSU opponents, that instilled belief in the guys that they belong,” Texas in the team’s conference opener. He ended the season said Carrigan. “Now it’s going out and capturing those second in the averaging 238 passing victories. It’s continuing to improve each day. We’re getting yards per game. He’ll be pushed by senior Kameron Mathis older and doing a better job of understanding expectations who has proved to be a leader on and off the field. and culture.” “Taylor did a great job when he came in and showed The players that exemplify what Carrigan wants out of his tremendous poise as a freshman. Kameron is a guy that can team are the seniors. This season, the program’s largest do a little bit of everything and last year we started to create class of seniors, many of whom have been with the program a role for him,” Carrigan said. “He’s vital to the success of the since its inception, will take the field. program. We’ll continue to expand on that role. Kameron had a great spring, so I’m not going to rule him out as a starter “They’ve been tremendous in the process of establishing for the fall, and both will be vital to our success.” culture, expectations, how we do things, and they make it easier on us as coaches. When it’s player-led and it starts Another key this season will be the Falcons’ depth in the in the locker room, you’re going to reap the rewards of back field. The team has high hopes for returning running that,” noted Carrigan. “Having guys that have been with back Marquis Simmons. He led the Falcons last season with the program for 4-5 years, the coaches can take more of a 111 carries for 537 yards. He’s joined by returners Leroy Giles step back from being the governing body because it’s now and Adrian Walker. A number of newcomers are also joining coming from inside the team.” the ranks in the back field, looking to earn play time.

One difference this season, and a likely-game changer, is “We have a tremendous amount of depth at running back,” how the Falcons’ schedule shaped out. The team will kick said Carrigan. “We’re excited about our backfield with off the season at home rather than on the road. They’ll play how many weapons we have. We’re going to need to get Wayland Baptist and Northern Michigan at creative on how we get guys the ball to make sure that and Grande Stadium. we’re utilizing them.”

114038_IS Media Guide.indd 4 7/15/19 11:10 AM The Falcons’ offensive coordinators have spent the off “They’re both intrinsically motivated and they really lead season strengthening their passing game. They’re looking to our team. As they go we follow,” said Carrigan. “Both of three returning receivers and play-makers Kyle McBride, Ben those guys do everything right each day of the week and Galaviz and Baylon Ware. The trio had an impressive 2018 it shows up on Saturday. They continue to work hard and season. McBride caught 47 passes for 635 yards to lead the get better. Baylon Ware had 13 receptions for 191 yards and one score on the year. Expect to see a stronger secondary this season. 2018 was a year of growth for this area of the defense. They allowed “Baylon Ware emerged as a young guy for us at wide 144 fewer points and gave up 777 fewer yards than the receiver. Kyle McBride came along really well last year and 2017 season. Carrigan and his coaching staff have spent we’re excited to have him back for another season. Ben the off-season developing new talent to hold the line for Galaviz showed tremendous progress in being a guy that the Falcons. can catch a ball for one-yard and turn it into a 40-yard touchdown,” said Carrigan. “We’re excited about what Matt “We’re looking for continued growth out of the secondary,” Zubiate and Rocky Barnes offer at tight end. The Falcons have brought on a new offensive line coach This is the Falcons fourth season as a football program. Victor Gill who has already made impressive gains to the line Carrigan says 2019 will be known as the year his seniors throughout the off-season. began to see their hard work pay off.

“The biggest thing in the offseason for the offensive line was “This group of seniors are really special,” he said. “They have the addition of Coach Gill and being able to give a little more been with us from the very beginning and have put in a lot of structure to those guys,” said Carrigan. “The spring went work not only on the field, but developing what we want this really well, they played a lot faster and more physical, and program to look like off the field. I’m excited to see their work I’m looking forward to see how they transition with coach come to fruition and end their careers proud.” Gill’s leadership in the fall.”

Turning to the defense, a player to watch this season is defensive end and outside linebacker John O’Kelly. His 2018 season ended early, he was sidelined by an injury.

“The defensive line has done a great job of setting the tone and the tempo for our defense in being fast and aggressive,” said Carrigan. “John O’Kelley is a leader in how he plays, we’re excited to have him back and looking forward to what he can do in the fall. He added about 20 pounds and looks great, but across the board on our defensive line a lot of those guys have been here for a few years and have established themselves.”

Keep an eye on the team’s linebackers – the Falcons have some of the most experienced linebackers in country. Seniors Chris Hoad and Keegan Gray return for their fourth and final season with the Falcons. Hoad is the current NCAA leader between all divisions with 369 tackles and was the Lone Star Conference Linebacker of the Year in 2018. Gray has 243 tackles over the last three years, and both players have played in all 33 games in their first three years as Falcons.

114038_IS Media Guide.indd 9 7/15/19 11:10 AM DR. SANDRA WOODLEY Dr. Sandra Woodley began her tenure as the President of UTPB on July 1, 2017. She brings a unique perspective to the presidency as her journey is similar to that of many students at UTPB. She married soon after graduating high school, completing her education while also working full-time and raising her children. It would take a decade for her to become the first person in her family to earn a university degree. Beyond her strong experience in higher education leadership, she brings great insight and understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing students.

Prior to becoming president, Dr. Woodley served as the Chief Executive Officer for the University of Louisiana System, where she led one of the nation’s largest higher education systems, serving 90,000 students at nine universities. She worked with the state’s governor and legislature, the system’s Board of Regents, as well as campus presidents and members of the public on matters of higher education policy.
