Report to the members

Writing about 1996 as we near the end of 1998(!) is a bit of a futile you; Lotus Seven branded pipe and slippers are winging their way exercise - so this report is fairly short. After all, how many of you to you as I write! want a reprise of the highs and lows of the Club two years ago? For those of you that just want a 'Top-line Summary' the Club - Getting the accounts out is becoming a more and more complex your Club - remains in good shape financially and 1996 showed a task each year; the more efficient we become the more complicated modest but pleasing growth in income over 1995. Expenditure rose the process. Result - no improvement in our timings! too but overall we managed to achieve a small growth in our net Still, we now have a qualified chartered accountant taking over as reserves (which means a small profit on the year). The day dawned bright and sunny, a nice change from the Leukaemia R the wind and rain all the preceding week. Beryl was on hand dispensing tea and coffee to all and sundry, including the local Law!

The event? The London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.

Just after 9 o'clock the first Seven arrived followed by the leading veteran car, an 1898 Stevens which pulled up in front of Beryl, short of fuel and water. The only problem was that teams experienced difficulty obtaining spares within a reasonable time. The Lotus Seven was used for what it was intended and it proved to be the right car for the job.

After 1965 the cars disappeared from the racing scene, some were used in racing schools but most simply vanished. In recent years car hunters have managed to unearth most of them, the chassis numbers seem to start at about 'SB-1850". The Lyon car (SB-1855). twice winner of Operation Jeunesse. now sits proudly in the Henri Malartre Museum near Lyon.
