2018 FLOWER SHOW Saturday 11th August saw the Village’s Annual Flower held in the Hall & Conservatory. In the junior section 32 children from our on-site nursery grew a vegetable in a pot or painted a flower or vegetable. Ages ranged between 2 & 4 years, what little stars they all are & their leader Dionne, (Not our catering Dionne, as wonderful as she is) is so enthusiastic, thank you Dionne. TREE PLANTED BY KING GEORGE V

You may have noticed that sadly the tree planted by King George V in 1921, has recently been cut down. The reason for this is that our visiting tree consultant inspected the pine tree and confirmed the tree was almost entirely dead. There were only a handful of needles without even a hint of green and all other leaves had flushed and then died. The tree consultant was unable to identify the precise cause of death, but did confirm the bark was completely dead all around the circumference of the tree up to a point at least 0.5m above ground level (much higher in places). Hence there is no chance of the tree recovering next year. Plans are in place to plant a new tree. Stuart Cameron

8 www.whiteleyvillage.org.uk WHITELEY VILLAGE LADIES’ LUNCH

I was asked to resurrect the popular WV “Ladies Lunch” that Hilary Harding, our ex Matron of the Care Centre, used to do once or twice a year. What a heart-warming and inspirational talk we were treated to on Saturday 4th August, at our Whiteley Village Ladies Lunch. Kathy Barber, the speaker on Organ Donation, was most interesting and very informative! She spoke from the heart and from experience, as her son Danny was murdered close to home, but his organs live on in five very fortunate recipients. Kathy had us riveted to our seats, the talk and and photos were emotional and interesting. She has been in contact with a couple of the recipients and meets occasionally with the gentleman who received Danny’s heart. I decorated the Conservatory with yellow sunflowers and yellow and green bunting, not being aware of the significance the sunflowers had on the whole story! Thank you to Sylvie, Dionne and Sausa for our delicious two course luncheon, to my daughter Jodi for pouring the welcome drinks and my dear friend Marian (an ex WV resident) for all your help setting up! I have been asked to organise another lunch early next year and hopefully we will have better support from the ladies, family and friends! Colleen Howard

NEW VILLAGER STORIES On and off, I have lived in the area since the 1970’s and despite knowing where Whiteley Village was situated, I never visited it. Last year was my ‘Annus Horribilis’ and almost died. Without the love and support of my friends and Social Services as well as the local BUPA care home that I was in for a few months, I would never have made it to the Village. However I am so glad that I did because since arriving here last November, my life has changed from black and white to technicolour and for the first time in my life, I am fully relaxed, feel very secure and safe. I have recently joined the bowls club and wish to set up a table tennis club. I have also been volunteering and helping some of the less active residents in Huntley House. Having been supported by many people last year when unwell, it’s now my turn to return that help, love and support VILLAGER to others that are in need as I was. TEA PARTY ON THE GREEN: THE CHALLENGE - NATIONAL CITIZENSHIP SERVICE (NCS) As part of the NCS programme, a group of young people joined us for three days in July and August to undertake some voluntary work with us. The students spent an afternoon interviewing villagers, hearing their stories and asking them about their lives. Their second visit was used to plan a community event for the village which they then fundraised for. This culminated in the lovely Tea Party on the Green which was held on their final visit on 8th August. The young people spent the morning preparing the food, entertainment and setting out furniture and then in the afternoon, they hosted over 60 residents and staff from Whiteley House, Huntley House and the cottages for the Tea Party on the Green. We would like to thank all the leaders and young people for giving up their time to create such a fabulous event. It was great to see so many residents enjoying themselves and spending time with the young people. Thank you to everyone who came to support the event! Laura Cole - Volunteer Coordinator

September 2018 11 RECIPES OF THE MONTH

Marrow & Ginger Jam

From Janet Stanton.

Recipe for Marrow and Ginger Jam. I made this jam for the Flower Show on Saturday 11th. August, several people have asked for the recipe.

1 kg. Marrow (or courgette) flesh 1 kg. Jam Sugar (available most super markets) 2 large or 3 small lemons 60 grams. Fresh root ginger 50/100 grams Crystallized Ginger. This is optional but does improve both the texture and taste of jam. I use about 70 grams.

Peel and scoop the seeds and soft part from the marrow a nd discard. Chop remaining flesh into small cubes about 1 cm. Grate zest from lemons and add to marrow Juice lemons and keep in a jug. Keep any pips separate. Chop lemon skins and tie into a muslin cloth along with the pips. Remove peel then grate (or chop very small) root ginger. Chop crystallized ginger into small pieces. Put cubed marrow flesh, grated lemon zest, muslin parcel and 2 tablespoonfuls of lemon juice into a very large saucepan or preserving pan, put over a low heat and cook until the marrow is transparent, (stirring occasionally) but not mushy, this takes approximately 30 minutes. Then increase heat and boil off any remaining liquid, stirring all the time. Add rest of lemon juice, root ginger and sugar. Heat slowly until sugar is completely melted then increase heat until there is a rolling/bubbling boil, (105 degrees on a thermometer if you have one) boil for 5 minutes (stirring all the time)then test for a set To test put a teaspoonful of the jam onto a cold plate leave in the fridge for a couple of minutes, then if a skin has formed which wrinkles when pushed the jam is ready, if not get it back to a rolling boil for another 2 minutes and test again. When ready remove the muslin parcel and scrape off any jam then stir in crystallized ginger, this does not need to be cooked. Pour jam into clean sterilised jars, cover and label. If you do not have a muslin cloth, this procedure is not essential but adds pectin which helps greatly with the set. I always use one and a set is achieved within 5 minutes boiling.

CARE HUB UPDATE: 3 Construction work on the Care Hub is progressing well and below is a selection of the latest photos. Thank you everyone who made it along to the Care Hub Information Events and as promised, we’ve featured some of your questions here and the answers given. If you have any further queries please contact any member of the Residents’ Liaison Committee or Andrea da Gama, PR & Communications Executive. Latest Photos 1: In early August, the block wall of the lower ground (LG) floor was being covered with insulation sheets, which sit underneath the brickwork. Offices will be located in this part of the building, which will face towards the north gate. 2: A week on, here’s the section of the LG floor facing Huntley House, which shows the insulation now being clad in brickwork. The Care Hub will have both brick and tiled walls to reflect the Arts and Crafts style of the Village.

3: This shows the ground floor level being built, (above the bricked section in the previous image). Care suites will be located along here and the outlines of their bay windows are now visible.
