Dear Church Family, I was asked about the precepts of the Church. You will find these listed in the Catechism of the , Part Three, Life in Christ. Five are listed beginning with number 2041. If you remember years ago, there were six but Marriage laws are explained in other sections of the Catechism. The laws of the Church are intended to help us grow in holiness, not constrict us. The word precept comes from the Latin praeceptum –meaning “to command” – so the Church precepts are often referred to as Church commandments. Other names include guidelines, expectations, rules, and obligations. These established precepts, along with the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes, are among the basic obligations for all Catholics. God, who gave Moses the Ten Commandments, also inspired the precepts of the Catholic Church. Church precepts are akin to minimum membership requirements. They are a summary of many laws, and purposefully fail- ing to comply is considered grave sin. These basic rules are intended to set us on the narrow path to eternal life and to help us grow in holiness. The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us, “The obligatory character of these positive laws… is meant to guarantee to the faithful the very necessary minimum in the spirit of prayer and moral effort, in the growth in love of God and neighbor :”(CCC 2041) The notion that the Church has established a list of obligations for its members goes back at least to the time of John the Baptist. When he began announcing to the people that the Messiah would soon arrive, those listening asked him. “What then should we do?” (Luke 3:10). We still ask that question, and the church points to the precepts as a starting point. The precepts are not nego- tiable, not duties we can avoid. If we sincerely believe the Catholic Church is guided by the Holy Spirit, then faithfully and consciously following its disciplines is second nature. The earliest Christians had rules about Church membership that they followed: keeping the Sabbath holy, receiving the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion, confessing their sins, fasting and abstaining, helping those in need, and seeking ways to support the fledgling Church. Their teachers were the Apostles, and the rules they advocated are in a book called the , also known as The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, a compilation of early Christian writings. Those early followers of Christ, like faithful Catholics today, looked to the precepts as guideposts pointing them on the way to increasing holiness. They realized they would be responsible to God for their behavior in this fleeting life and looked for ways to prepare. James Cardinal Gibbons, in his book, The Faith of Our Fathers, writes: “If a citizen is bound to obey the laws of his country, though these laws may not in all respects be comfortable to strict justice; if a child is bound by natural and divine law to obey his mother, though she may sometimes err in judgments, how much more strictly are we not obliged to be docile to the teachings of the Catholic Church, Our Mother, whose admonitions are always just, whose precepts immutable!”

The five precepts are quoted verbatim from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2042-2043. The First precept #2042. You shall attend Mass on Sundays and on Holy Days of Obligation, and rest from servile labor. The second precept #2042. You shall confess all grave sins at least once a year. This precept ensures preparation for the Eucharist by the reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, which continues Baptism’s work of conversion and forgiveness. The third precept #2042. You shall receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easter Season. This precept guarantees as a minimum the reception of the Lord’s Body and Blood in connection with the Paschal feasts, the origin and center of the Christian liturgy. Many receive weekly or even daily. The fourth precept #2043. You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church. This precept helps us acquire mastery over our instincts and freedom of heart. The fifth precept #2043. You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church which means that the faithful are obliged to assist with the material needs of the Church, each according to his own ability.

The Church is so much more than the precepts. It is a lifelong study. It doesn’t end at Confirmation class in the PREP Program or your last class in a Catholic High School. I recommend that we become lifelong students of our faith. The more we know the more we can love God and neighbor. The more we love, the more we can serve and bring greater goodness to our Church and world. I encourage all Catholics to get and read the Catechism of the Catholic Church. For those who are computer savvy, you can go to the Vatican website: Vatican.va. Look for resources. Click on it and you can get the Bible, The Catechism, Code of Law, etc. Blessings, Monsignor Majoros MAN UP PHILLY Men's Spirituality Conference - March 4
