FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE on Thursday, 9/14/17 Potomac Nationals Media Relations Contacts: Mike Weisman 703-590-2311 ext. 219 (Office) 781-929-2755 [email protected] 2017 Potomac Nationals Season in Review Potomac Celebrates 40th Season in Franchise History Woodbridge, VA—A season after the Potomac Nationals were just one out away from a seventh trip to the Mills Cup Championship Series, the P-Nats set their sights on a sixth title quest in 2017. For the fifth consecutive season, Potomac ushered in more than 200,000 fans to The Pfitz. Fans got to enjoy a season of excitement not only on the field, but off the field in celebration of the 40th season in franchise history. INSIDE THE CHALK Armed with multiple top prospects in the Nationals’ farm system and 11 returning players from the 2016 squad, Potomac began the 2017 season well equipped to make a run into the playoffs. The Red, White, & Blue remained in playoff contention nearly all season long, but fell short of another postseason berth in the final week of the 2017 season. The P-Nats ended with an overall record of 63- 77. The Opening Day roster featured five of the top 30 prospects in Washington’s system according to Baseball America. At the top of the list, OF Victor Robles entered as a consensus top prospect in the organization and a consensus top 20 prospect in all of Minor League Baseball. 3B Kelvin Gutierrez began the season with a return trip to the P-Nats as the 16th ranked prospect for the Nationals and rated as the best infield arm for Washington according to Baseball America.

Penn Alumni Reports Committees and School Organizations Penn Alumni Board of Directors Meeting College Hall, Room 200 Saturday, October 29, 2016 Alumni Class Leadership Council Submitted by Gregory Suss, C’75, President The ACLC is the advisory board for alumni classes, and is comprised of experienced volunteer alumni leaders representing classes spanning nine decades. The Board works closely with Alumni Relations to provide classes with tools for class leadership and best practices to engage alumni. ACLC members provide insight to classes on communications and reunion planning process as well as non-reunion year activities. The ACLC co-hosts the Penn Reunion Leadership Conference (PRLC), selects Class Awards, manages Class Elections for the 5th-40th reunion classes and hosts a Presidents’ Event for undergraduate class leaders bi-annually. The ACLC operates with a committee structure: Operations, Membership/Pipeline, Communications, Awards, Special Projects, Campus Event and Emeritus Engagement. Committee reports for this year: Operations Committee – Operations has completed full redraft of the ACLC bylaws, which were ratified in September 2016. Membership/Pipeline – Membership/Pipeline has vetted candidates for Board membership and developed a system by which terms are tracked in order to ensure regular turnover. Communications – Created templates for class presidents to send emails to classes on a regular basis during year. This is a groundbreaking step for enhancing class communication. Awards – Restructured awards process for Class Award of Merit and David N. Tyre Class Communication Awards. Campus Event and Emeritus Engagement - Developed expanded schedule of events and talking points to further integrate ACLC's presence and impact; working to elevate involvement with Penn Traditions staff; and institutionalizing status and roles of ACLC members following the expiration of their terms.

Ray Hardee, “Wolfpack Twirler” ©DiamondsintheDusk.com On June 4, 1942, four days after signing with the Philadelphia Athletics off the campus of North Carolina State College, bespectacled right-hander Ray Hardee makes his professional baseball debut with the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Starting the nightcap of an Interstate (B) League doubleheader against the Harrisburg Senators, the 21-year-old Hardee begins his professional career by throwing 12 straight balls and walking the first three Senator batters before be- ing relieved by Virgil Feeney. The 21-year-old Feeney will eventually absorb the loss in a 7-3 defeat. Hardee appears in only three games with the Blue Rocks before being demoted to the Newport News Builders of the Virginia (C) League where he goes 8-5 in 15 appearances. Following a four-year stint in the Army during World War II, the Clayton, North Carolina native returns in 1946 and will pitch five more seasons in the minors, finishing in 1950 with the Greensboro Patriots and a 47-39 career mark. On July 13, 1946, Hardee hurls a no-hitter for the Angier-Fuquay Springs Bulls Ray Hardee in a 13-0 Tobacco (D) League win over ex-major leaguer Van Lingle Mungo 1942 North Carolina State College Wolfpack and the Clinton Blues. A year later, pitching for the Raleigh Capitals, Hardee wins both ends of a Carolina League doubleheader (August 18, 1947) against the Greensboro Patriots striking out 14 and allowing only six hits in a pair of complete game victories. Hardee is a career-best 18-12 for the Capitals in 1947, earning both a berth on the Carolina League All-Star team and a free agent contract with the National League’s Boston Braves.

Today he was the featured guest speaker for Rock Isalnd Rotary. A major part of his comments centered on the newly established 10-year affiliation with the Kansas City Royals, but he began by saying how very HAPPY he was. The cause of his happiness was that we kept baseball in the Quad Cities. Heller said we don’t know how close we have come on two occasion to permanently losing professional baseball. He said in 2002 the franchise was sold, with papers signed and delivered to an owner who bought the team for the express purpose of moving it to Ohio. Under the major league rules, had that happened the Quad Cities could not have ever obtainined another professional baseball franchise because Clinton has a team and would have veto rights over any team coming to an “adjacent county”.

Minor League Baseball Realignment Optimal Leagues by Distance and Affiliation Eli Katz, Steven Witkin, Anton Dahbura The Johns Hopkins University Department of Computer Science Baltimore, MD March 2020 Introduction As part of the Johns Hopkins Minor League Scheduling Research Team, we have accumulated several years of experience working with minor league presidents and minor league scheduling committees to optimize MiLB league schedules in the face of the complicated geographical and other league- and team-specific challenges. During our meetings with each league during the 2019 Baseball Winter Meetings in San Diego, we realized that while Major League Baseball (MLB) has been working on a recently revealed plan to realign Minor League Baseball (MiLB), it evidently has not considered the new logistical issues that are likely to be caused in the process of attempting to resolve existing issues, with the risk of having a new alignment of teams into leagues that does not meet the stated objectives of MLB. MLB has proposed eliminating 42 MiLB franchises to, among other goals, improve player health and welfare by reducing team travel throughout the MiLB season [1]. We therefore feel that it is extremely important to analyze the proposed plan as well as future realignment proposals to determine the optimal realignment of the remaining MiLB teams into leagues and to identify the advantages and disadvantages of such plans both on their own merits and in comparison to the current alignment scheme. Our main objective is to be conformant with the master structure of MiLB and the MLB plan, thereby creating an alignment of the four full-season levels of MiLB with 30 teams each in a configuration that reduces average travel for each team, while also minimizing the number of teams that would be forced to change levels.
