Problem Ambuklao Hydroelectric Plant is located in the moun- tains of Bokod, Benguet and is about 36 kilometers Northeast of Baguio City. The plant was designed to pro- vide 75MW of energy to the Luzon Grid. When SN Aboitiz Power—Benguet, Inc. took over the operation, they began major rehabilitation and upgrade of the facil- ity. Part of the major rehabilitation was its tailrace—the downstream part of the dam where impound water en- ters the Agno River. The tailrace will be subjected to tur- bulent waters which could result to abrupt damage on the structure. In addition, the tailrace should be finished before the rainy season thus, it requires a rigid erosion protection that can be easily installed whilst it is steady enough to prevent hydrostatic uplift.
Solution After careful evaluation of the site conditions, Maccaferri proposed Type II Geotextile Grout Mattress made of woven geotextile to cover the slope of the tailrace, ex- tending onto its base to prevent scouring. A layer of MacTex Nonwoven geotextile was placed between the mattress and and the core of tailrace to act as separator and additional erosion protection. Before Installation June 2010
