MEDLOCKED IN - For the first time in his young career, redshirt freshman quarterback Jake Medlock saw extended playing time against Louisiana (9/24) when starter Wes Carroll went down with an ankle injury. Medlock responded with 216 passing yards to go along with 39 rushing yards and one touchdown.

DISPOSSESED - FIU’s season has gone against conventional wisdom this year, as the Panthers are 3-0 when losing time of posses- sion and running less plays than the opponent. In FIU’s two losses, the Panthers have won the time of possession battle and have ran more plays than their opponents.

THE ICEMAN COMETH - Isame “Iceman” Faciane didn’t fill up the stat sheet against UCF (9/17), but he had arguably the biggest play of the game when he picked up a Jeff Godfrey and returned it 51 yards for a game-tying touchdown with six seconds left in the first half. He finished the game with just one tackle, but his play inside freed up linebackers Winston Fraser and Jordan Hunt who combined for 21 tackles vs. UCF.

3 Game 7: FIU vs. Arkansas State • Saturday, October 18, 2011 • ASU Stadium - Jonesboro, Ark. RECORD-SETTING START – Against North Texas (9/1), the FIU offense came out of the gates firing on all cylin- ders as they scored touchdowns on their first four possessions of the ballgame to take a 28-0 lead after a quarter ofplay. The 28 first quarter points are the most FIU has ever scored in the opening period of a ballgame, and are just three shyofthe program-record for points in a quarter.

CRISTOBAL GETS EXTENDED – In August, FIU Executive Director of Sports and Entertainment Pete Garcia announced that Head Coach Mario Cristobal, who led the program to its first-ever conference championship and first-ever bowl appearance and victory in 2010, has signed a new contract extension with the University through the 2016 season.

Cristobal, who was named the 2010 Sun Belt Coach of the Year, led the Panthers to their first-ever Sun Belt Conference championship and went on to defeat Toledo in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. In the classroom, the football program has excelled under Cristobal. Over the past four seasons, FIU has registered 86 all-conference academic honorees. This past year, football recorded its highest multi-year APR score, registering a 936, 30 points better than the previous year’s score. Since the arrival of Cristobal, the football team’s multi-year APR score has improved by 51 points.

Entering his fifth season at FIU, Cristobal was named the program’s second head coach on December 19, 2006.

GRIFFIN FOR GROZA – FIU junior kicker Jack Griffin was named to the 2011 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award Watch List. The list features 30 of the top place-kickers in college football. Griffin is the only Sun Belt player to be recognized on the watch list.

In 2010, Griffin had one of the best seasons of any SBC kicker hitting an FIU record 17-of-20 field goals and connectingonall 45 extra points, which is also an FIU record. He finished the season riding on the shoulders of his teammates after kicking the game-winning field goal at the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl as time expired in FIU’s 34-32 win over Toledo, the first bowl victory in school history.

PANTHER PROS - Two former Panthers recently made their pro debuts as Anthony Gaitor was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Greg Ellingson signed a rookie free agent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Both players saw action in their team’s preseason openers, with Gaitor registering a sack in his first game. Gaitor went on to make the Bucs roster, but Ellingson was cut.

DEFENSIVE DIFFERENCE – FIU’s defense will be under new direction in 2011 as former UConn Defensive Coordinator Todd Orlando has taken over the reigns of the Panthers’ D. Orlando comes to FIU after a 12-year stint with the Huskies, including six seasons as the defensive coordinator. Orlando had coached UConn’s inside linebackers since the 1999 season and, in 2005, he also assumed the role of defensive coordinator. In 2010, Orlando’s defense helped the Huskies capture the Big East championship, and play in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

REMARKABLE TURNAROUND - To explain the Panthers’ rise to the top of the Sun Belt Conference one needs to look no further than the improvements in the running game and the defense. In 2010 the Panthers ranked 27th in the country in rushing offense after finishing 107th in 2009. The Panthers’ defense, which ranked 119th in the Nation in 2009, finished 2010 ranked 61st in the country.

MR. DO-IT-ALL - In 2008, T.Y. Hilton became the only player in over a decade to score a TD in five different ways (Reception, Pass, , Kick Return and Punt Return). The first time Hilton touched the ball in his freshman year at Kansas (8/30/08), he returned a punt 74 yards for a TD. He returned a kick off 90 yards for a TD at Louisiana (11/1/08) and he threw for a TD against Arkansas State (11/8/08). He then rushed for a TD against FAU (11/29/09). He also had seven receptions for TD.

HILTON HEAVE - Maybe his best game or moment as a Panther came on what is now called the “Hilton Heave”, when T.Y. set a new school record with 199 receiving yards and recorded his fourth-straight game of 200-plus all-purpose yards against Arkansas State. But the Coup De Gras for Hilton against the Red Wolves was his 38-yard touchdown pass that clinched a 22-21 FIU victory. Afterwards, he not only earned Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week accolades, but he also was given an ESPN.com Helmet Sticker.
