HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

 The history of Sheikhpura is the history of Munger. History of Sheikhpura dates back to the age of Mahabharata. It is believed that the demon girl Hidimba , who married the Pandav prince Bhima and gave birth to their heroic son Ghatotkach, lived on the hillocks situated in Sheikhpura. Later on, that hill was called ‘Girihinda’ after the name of Hidimba. In Sheikhpura there still exists a village by the name of Girihinda.  The first authentic historical account of this place finds a mention in the travelogue of the Chinese pilgrim Hieun Tsiang , in the seventh century A.D. During the Pallava reign, Sheikhpura was one of the chief administrative centers.  According legend says that about six hundred years ago a great Sufi saint Hazarat Makhdum Shah Shoeb Rahamatullah Aleh, had founded the city of Sheikhpura. He cleared the dense forests and settled down at a place. People too settled down in the vicinity and soon a densely populated settlement came up in Sheikhpura. It is believed that the famous Afghan ruler Sher Shah Suri had the famous ‘Dal Kuan’ constructed over here. Till now ‘Dal Kuan’ and Sheikhpura are considered synonymous to each other.  During the Mughal period, Sheikhpura had the status of a police Thana. In the British period Sheikhpura was accorded the status of big Kotwali and after independence it was given the status of development block. The first of Bihar Dr. Shrikishna Singh, belonged to Sheikhpura district .
