Marquetry on Drawer-Model Marionette Duo-Art This piano began life as a brown Recordo. The sound board was re-engineered, as the original ribs tapered so soon that the bass bridges pushed through. The strings were the wrong weight, and were re-scaled using computer technology. Six more wound-strings were added, and the weights of the steel strings were changed. A 14-inch Duo-Art pump, a fan-expression system, and an expression-valve-size Duo-Art stack with a soft-pedal compensation lift were all built for it. The Marquetry on the side of the piano was inspired by the pictures on the Arto-Roll boxes. The fallboard was inspired by a picture on the Rhythmodic roll box. A new bench was built, modeled after the bench originally available, but veneered to go with the rest of the piano. Landmarks Preservation Commission September 10, 2013, Designation List 466 LP-2551 STEINWAY & SONS RECEPTION ROOM AND HALLWAY, first floor, including the reception room’s domed rotunda and balcony, the east foyer and stairs leading to the balcony; the hallway of the public corridor, up to the north glass doors, that adjoins the reception room; and the fixtures and components of these spaces, including but not limited to, wall and ceiling surfaces, floor surfaces, arches, pilasters, stairs, landings, ceiling murals, painted medallions, metal railings, metal grilles, chandeliers and lighting fixtures, door enframements, doors, windows, attached furnishings and decorative elements; Steinway Hall, 109-113 West 57th Street (aka 106-116 West 58th Street), Manhattan. Built 1924-25; Warren & Wetmore architects; Walter L. Hopkins, lead designer; Thompson-Starrett Co., builders. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1010, Lot 25, in part. On July 23, 2013, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation of the Steinway & Sons Reception Room and Hallway and the proposed designation of the related landmark site. The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with provisions of law. Three people spoke in support of designation, including the owner and representatives of the Historic Districts Council and the Society for the Architecture of the City. Summary Commissioned by the prominent New York City piano manufacturer Steinway & Sons in 1924-25, the Steinway & Sons Reception Room and Hallway is one of New York City’s most impressive neo-Renaissance style interiors. Located in Steinway Hall, a designated New York City Landmark, on the north side of West 57th Street, between Sixth and Seventh Avenues, the primary space is a double-height octagonal rotunda where visitors, musicians, and potential customers meet store representatives before entering various piano showrooms. -

Mechanical instruments and phonography: The Recording Angel of historiography This article strives to examine the established historical narrative concerning music recording. For that purpose it will concentrate on the phonographic era of acoustic recording (from 1877 to the late 1920s), a period when several competing technologies for capturing and registering sound and music were being incorporated in everyday life. Moreover, it will analyse the significant chronological overlap of analogue and digital media and processes of recording, thus adding a layer of complexity to the current historical narratives regarding that activity. In order to address that set of events, this work will mainly recur to the work of both Walter Benjamin and Slavoj Žižek. Benjamin’s insight as an author that bore witness to and analysed the processes of commodification that were operating in the period in which this article concerns is essential in a discussion that focuses on aspects such as modernity, technology, and history. Furthermore, his work on history presents a space in which to address and critique the notion of historicism as an operation that attempts to impose a narrative continuity to the fragmentary categories of existence within modernity, a stance this article will develop when analysing the historiography of music and sound recording. The musical information necessary to do this can be obtained from his published scores, the punching scores that reveal the planning behind the compositions, copies of the rolls, or the punched rolls themselves. The most direct method of extending the Studies is to convert them to digital format, because of the similarities between the way notes are represented on a player piano roll and in MIDI. The process of editing and arranging Nancarrow’s Studies in the MIDI environment is explained, including how piano roll dynamics are converted into MIDI velocities, and other decisions that must be made in order to perform them in a particular environment: the Yamaha Disklavier with its accompanying GM sound module. While Nancarrow approved of multi-timbral synthesis, separating the voices of his Studies and assigning them unique timbres changes the listener’s experience of the “resultant,” Tenney’s term for the fusion of multiple voices into a single polyphonic texture.
