• :=z •• ~.

In attempting t,o produce something like a con nected account of only a small branch, eompara tively, of the history of these people, we must a,sk for the indulgence of readers for the imperfect effort here made, the matel'ials for which it has not. been an easy task to collect. Many people have been considerate, and willing ~o give every information in their power, whilst others have been shy, evidently believing that there was some ulterior object in view in making enquiries of them, when really and in truth the only aim was to bring together a few generations of the name in a connected and readable form, A gentleman who formerly travelled for a firm (Messrs. Hopkinson and Sons, of Huddersfield), and who had paid considerable attent.ion to this family name, having come across members of it scattered far and wide of Todmorden, and having conversed with many of them about their origin generally, found that they nearly all agreed with him that the stock arose somewhere in this neigh bourhood. He himself had come to the conclusion that in and about Cross-stone was the seat from which they sprung'. Many years ago there appeared between t,hirty and forty letters in our local papers, copied from a Halifax journal, in which many branches of the Sutcliffe family were ably traced out, and the 4 several derivations and spellings of the name occurred. These would most probably arise much as variations in the mode of spelling other names did in which lawyers and copyists at the time looked upon and heard the word spoken, and by letters trying to give the most correct pronoun cia tion in their power. It may safely, however, be stated that for a period of 150 years the name has been speIt and pronounced as at the present time. There are a great. number of local families of the same name in Heptonstall, Stansfield, Erring den, Langfield and Todmorden and Walsden, and other places lying immediately adjoining those townships,. who will doubtless be branches from the common stock, wherever the home, place or seat of that beginning may be found. Without attempting to go into any learned or far reaching survey (for which we are not qualified) for the origin of the name, or saying" that it came from Holland, or other foreign country, it may be stated here, that the Dutch are said to have a name Zot.cliffe, in which form the Z comes in for our S, and should a Zotcliffe have a:crived at Cross-stone two or three hnndred years ago, he would most likely come as an expert artisan-a weaver perhaps driven away from his native country on account of some inventive genius displayed. ill his trade at home,-or he might come of his own free will, having heard that the manufacture of "fustians" and "stuff 5 pieces" was progressing extensively in this country at that time,-which goods would very likely, in any case, be par·tly exported, and so people of like pursuits worild be quite ready to look into the texture and twill or figure of an article of dress or otherwise, and not be slow to find out the why and wherefore of H. In the Oouut,y of York there are said to be both " N ol'thcliffe "-N orclif-and "Southcliffe;" and " Suttons" or Southtowns, in Devonshire, Oheshire and Surrey. But" Sutton" is not so favourable as a root without undergoing other transformations to bring out the word Sutcliffe or Sutclyffe,-Sutlife,-Sutycliffe, and various other ways of spelling. In the neighbourhood of Tod morden we have many "Oliffes," "Oraggs" or " Scouts," as in Scaitcliffe; besides which, in those distant days to which we have referred, Oross stone, "bluff end" or promontory, may have been better wooded and rocky to a greater degree than now, and having a face looking towards the south, therefore we may conclude that the" Southcliffe " is the propel' derivation of the name, and in all probability, as the gentleman before quoted stated, may have been the situation from which the Sut cliffes arose; or if otherwise, we leave to time, or ot.her heads and hands the task of shewing. John Sutcliffe, of" Shaw," in Langfield, who died February 12th, 1745, is believed to have been the common father of the branches of this family treated of in the following tables. He had three 6 sons, and we are told by members of the same three daughters also, but the names of them are not given; this has come down by tradition. the females being in all likelihood married into neigh bouring families and the names lost. The sons were Thomas of Rodwell-hey or end, wbo is said to have lived on the better fa-rm at that place; John of Kilnhurst, and William of Mankinholes; they were all farmers and manufacturers. These particulars llotbeing intended as of t,he nature of a regularly constructed pedigree, are arrang·ed in tables of families as a "record" of generations arising within the "ken" of a grandfather's father, and so been transmitted with the peculiari ties of the times from them to their children, and so onward as traditionary evidences of the same. In order to be understood, the eldest or heads of families are all treated of first, and afterwards the branches arising from them following in t,he order of seniority. Horsfall, and died there January 17th, 1824, aged 51 years.* *NoTE.-Ely and John Sutcliffe, of Mankinholes and Horsfall, were piece makers and carriers, and 8 attended the Halifax market. A gentleman, now living (1887), can remember Ely saying, when he had become a prosperous t,radesman, "That he had been as low in the world as any man could be out of the poorhouse." When the Halifax Piece Hall was erected, he became a shareholder, and as such was the owner of one room in which to offer his goods for sale. He married Sally, the widow of James Lord, she having four sons then living by her first husband, viz., James, Oharles. Thomas and Samuel. She was the sister of Moses, Aaron and William Baron, of Mankinholes, and became the mother of Mary and John by her second husband. After the death of the old people (Ely and John), the son regularly received the rent of the room in Halifax Piece Hall; and many years ago, when the Corporation of that town were making alterations, the grandson of Ely sold the share for the sum of £40 . • The descendants of William and Susan Sut cliffe, of Rodwell-end, Stansfield, and Flailcroft, Todmorden: William Sutcliffe, and Susan, third farmer and manufacturer, daughter of Samuel Flailcroft, Fielden, Platts Todmorden. house, Todmorden. * N OTE.-When a young man he taught a school at Knowlwood, and obtained the name of "Billy Knot" in the following way: Having courted a young woman, servant to Doctor Heywort,h in Pall Mall (now Water-street), Todmorden, with with whom he had oft,en sat, and watched her per form some of her work. He noticed t,hat in sew ing she left the knot on the thread, on the outside of the hem or garment instead of under, and so out of sight. Afterwards, when chaffed by his 25 female acquaintances about having jilted her off, he said, he would not have a woman who left her "knots" in that way. Mr. Law was the author of a work in prose and poetry, published in 1832. It is chiefly occupied with legends, &c., of Stood ley Pike, and other local subjects, and is the most authentic and interesting account extant. He was possessed of a genius of a high order, and it was a pity that he was doomed to waste his abilities as a pedagogue in an out of the way locality like Sowerby. A more active and enlivening situation for him would have been found "in the busy haunts of men," where his talents would have been appreciated, with profit and advantage to both himself and family.
