Del Rosario* College of Arts and Sciences Mindanao University of Science and Technology Cagayan de Oro City, 9000 Philippines * [email protected] Date received: May 28, 2014 Revision accepted: October 9, 2014 ___________________________________________ Abstract This paper compared upland and coastal spring freshwaters in Misamis Oriental in terms of their physico-chemical properties, heavy metal contents, and microbiological characteristics. The physico-chemical properties included the following: turbidity, temperature, pH, conductivity, total dissolve solids (TDS), salinity, chlorides, total hardness and total organic carbon (TOC). The heavy metals determined were lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), aluminum (Al), arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), antimony (Sb), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and iron (Fe). For the microbiological assessment, total coliform count and E. coli detection was tested. The results of physico-chemical analyses have shown that both coastal and upland freshwaters from spring sources passed the standard requirements of the Philippines, USA, EU and WHO. The upland freshwaters, however, are better than the coastal freshwaters since the former are significantly lower in conductivity, TDS, salinity, chlorides, and TOC. Favorable findings have been seen also for the heavy metals which pass the different standards except for antimony, which is somewhat doubtful when assessed against the stricter USA and EU standards. The microbiological test results revealed substantial contaminations with fecal bacteria for both upland and coastal freshwater sources. -

Thus, this study was conducted to investigate two coastal municipalities’ (Opol and Jasaan) perception towards coastal waters (CW) and solid waste management (SWM) along Macajalar bay, Philippines. Sociodemographic indicators of the 180 residents and how this influenced their level of knowledge-awareness-practices (KAP) towards CW and SWM were determined using modified survey questionnaire. Purposive sampling was employed to communities residing adjacent to coastal waters. Both quantitative (One-Way ANOVA and T-test for unequal variances at α-0.05) and qualitative analyses were utilized to extrapolate conclusions. Present findings revealed varying sociodemographic indicators influencing KAP. Opol coastal residents level of knowledge and practices were influenced by gender (K:p-0.0314; P:p- 0.0155) and age (p- 0.0404), whereas level of awareness was influenced by age (p- 0.0160), length of residency (p- 0.0029), and educational attainment (p-0.0089). -

The Archaeology of Karaang Jasaan
Vol. XXXVII 1 ARTICLES The Archaeology Of Karaang Jasaan Leee Anthony M Neri, Andrea Malaya Ragragio, Maria Elena Wright, Agnes Paulita R Roa, Armand Salvador B Mijares, Thea Kersti Tandog Abstract The University of the Philippines – Archaeological Studies Program (UP- ASP) conducted an archaeological survey along the coast of Misamis Oriental in 2007 and 2008. Forty-one archaeological sites have been identified and reported to the National Museum of the Philippines. One of these historical sites identified was in Karaang Jasaan, Sitio Cota, Barangay Aplaya, Municipality of Jasaan. The Karaang Jasaan Site is a Spanish Complex. Local people believed that the said complex was composed of an old church with a hexagonal belfry, municipal hall, and a cemetery. In 2010, an extensive archaeological excavation and historical research were conducted at the said site. Reconstruction of the site complex was based on the evidence of archaeological excavations and material culture. The Karaang Jasaan Site has a single nave with one main entrance and two subsidiary entrances at the lateral side of the church. It has a hexagonal belfry and a rectangular courtyard. Further from the courtyard was a 2-story convent used by the parish priest. The Karaang Jasaan Site was the original settlement of the people of Jasaan before they were transferred to the present location by the Jesuits ca. 19th century CE. In the Philippines, the level of exploitation of these species is low despite their high diversity and potentially large harvestable biomass. A taxonomic survey of the Gracilariaceae was conducted along the western corridor of Macajalar Bay in northern Mindanao for the first time. Six common species were found in three sampling sites. The findings of this study will contribute to the baseline marine biodiversity information, can promote the use of the various species among coastal inhabitants, and provide guidance towards better policy formulation for more effective resource management. City Agricultural Development Plan 2019-2022
CITY AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN 2019-2022 PREFACE The City Agricultural Development Plan (CADP) 2019-2022 spins off from the Updated 2017-2019 Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) of the City Government. The CADP was further substantiated through series of technical sessions particularly involving the key technical officers and overseers of the offices of city agriculture, city veterinary, poverty reduction, and city planning. As an operating document of the CDP for the city’s agriculture sector, the CADP provides the guidepost in ensuring the sector’s resilience to the pressures of social and economic development and changes in climate patterns. Thus, the CADP intends to help make the city’s development pursuit to be more responsive to socio-economic dynamics and one that adapts to technological advances. Reports noted that climate change affects the broad range of agricultural productivity, food security, nutrient quality, dietary diversity, and food safety (e.g. USAID, 2017) of which interventions must be developed to able to respond to these dynamics. This plan, therefore, is structured to respond to these challenges and help ensure resiliency of the city’s agriculture assets. The plan briefly provides the city’s profile in terms of its demography and economy (Chapter I) and also highlights the agriculture profile of the city encompassing the subsectors on crops, livestock and poultry, and fisheries (Chapter II). The development issues and challenges that beset the city’s agriculture sector and the corresponding objectives that are intended to address them are also presented (Chapters III and IV). The final parts of this plan deal with the strategic mechanism, targets and interventions – translated into proposed programs and projects – which are expected to provide adequate responses to the city’s agricultural issues and concerns (Chapters V, VI, and VII).
