We will follow Álvaro Siza Vieira and Eduardo Souto de Moura as the former opens the first doors to competitions and the latter follows the master with renewed strength and research vigour. The European convergence provides the opportunity to develop and confirm other architects whose competences and aesthetics are internationally known and recognized. Competitions become an opportunity to other work, different scales and strategies. By 2000, the downfall of the golden initial European years makes competitions not only an opportunity but the only opportunity for young architects. From the early tentative, explorative years of Siza’s firs competitions to the current massive participation of Portuguese architects in foreign competitions there is a long, cumulative effort of competence and visibility that gives international competitions a symbolic, unquestioned value. They have done so because they believed competitions are worth it, despite all its negative aspects. Serpentine Pavilion 2014, designed by Smiljan Radić 26 June – 19 October 2014 Serpentine Gallery Press images at serpentinegalleries.org/about/press-page Smiljan Radić is the fourteenth architect to accept the Serpentine’s invitation to design a temporary Pavilion outside the entrance to the Serpentine Gallery in Kensington Gardens. The commission is one of the most anticipated events in the cultural calendar and has become one of London’s leading summer attractions since launching in 2000. Smiljan Radić’s design follows Sou Fujimoto’s cloud-like structure, which was visited by almost 300,000 people in 2013 and was one of the most visited Pavilions to date. Previous Pavilions have been designed Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei, 2012; Peter Zumthor, 2011; Jean Nouvel, 2010; Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, SANAA, 2009; Frank Gehry, 2008; Olafur Eliasson and Kjetil Thorsen, 2007; Rem Koolhaas and Cecil Balmond, with Arup, 2006; Álvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura with Cecil Balmond, Arup, 2005; MVRDV with Arup, 2004 (un-realised); Oscar Niemeyer, 2003; Toyo Ito and Cecil Balmond - with Arup, 2002; Daniel Libeskind with Arup, 2001; and Zaha Hadid, who designed the inaugural Pavillion in 2000. Occupying a footprint of some 541 square metres on the lawn of the Serpentine Gallery, Radić’s plans depict a semi-translucent, cylindrical structure, resting on large quarry stones. Radić’s Pavilion has its roots in his earlier work, particularly the studio model for The Castle of the Selfish Giant, inspired by the Oscar Wilde story, and the Restaurant Mestizo, part of which is supported by large boulders. -

In that sense, architecture is a material culture close to the necessities of food production and the practice of medicine. Irrespective of whether we have in mind the idiosyncrasies of vernacular architecture or the embodiment of power, building culture like all culture entails a mediation between innovation and tradition. At the same time, modernization as an ever-accelerating instrumental process continues relentlessly to such an extent that we are on the verge of losing our former capacity to assimilate in cultural terms the volatility of constantly changing conditions. Modern architecture since its inception has been continuously challenged to find modes of spatial, structural and material organization capable of responding adequately to new and often unprecedented circumstances. This lecture course has been devised in order to convey to young architects the way in which the Modern Movement may be perceived retrospectively as a series of wave-like formations which come into being, rise to their maturity and then fall away as they are overtaken by new impulses responding to totally different conditions. As the following brief history of the Modern Movement attempts to demonstrate, one may look at the past as a sequence of discernable impulses that each have had their own life span. -

Studio D73 deals with interior design, different commercial and private projects, from analysis to production, and carries out the project phases thanks to a very efficient team of professionals based in the headquarter in Italy and the two other offices in Moscow, Tunis and Tbilisi. Within the past few years, Studio D73 has grown and reached many countries abroad, mainly in Russia, East Europe and North Africa, with the aim of keeping growing in new countries in the near future. 2013-11-15 Nobel Center architectural competition Summary of Stage 1 Background Ever since the Nobel Foundation was established in 1900, there have been plans for a Nobel Prize building where the Nobel Laureates and their achievements could be presented to the general public. Under an agreement between the Nobel Foundation and the City of Stockholm in December 2011, the idea of a public building for the Nobel Prize will now become a reality. The City of Stockholm is providing a site on the Blasieholmen peninsula in central Stockholm where a new Nobel Center will be built to serve as a meeting place in the spirit of the Nobel Prize. At the initiative of the Nobel Foundation, a company known as Nobelhuset AB has been established in order to implement the building project. The cost of the Nobel Center is estimated at a total of SEK 1.2 billion at 2011 cost levels. Thanks to donations from the Erling-Persson Family Foundation and the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation in June 2013, much of the financing for the Nobel Center has been secured. Together these donors are contributing SEK 800 million. The Nobel Prize, the achievements and life stories of the Nobel Laureates and future prospects in the Nobel Prize fields serve as a rich source on which the Nobel Center will base its activities. The Center will be open to visitors, with spaces for exhibitions, school programmes, events, meetings, a library, restaurant and shop, as well as parking facilities. The building will also house a large auditorium, where the annual Nobel Prize Award Ceremony can take place. -

GRIEDER CONTEMPORARY Ettore Sottsass & The Memphis Group Inside a Collector’s Home November 24, 2017 – February 23, 2018 Opening hours: Fri, 11 am – 6 pm and by prior arrangement Grieder Contemporary is delighted to present the exhibition: Ettore Sottsass and The Memphis Group – Inside a Collector’s Home, marking the official inauguration of its new gallery space in Küsnacht/Zurich. After extensive renovation and extension works by Fuhrimann & Hächler architects, the newly built annex of the Modernist villa is now ready to welcome Grieder Contemporary's first exhibition in Küs- nacht with works by Ettore Sottsass and the Memphis Group. The exhibition will showcase masterpieces of the acclaimed designer and artist Ettore Sottsass, as well as other objects by members of the Memphis Group sourced from an original private interior collection from the early 1980s. Original vintage furniture and objects will send us back in time and allow us to immerse ourselves in a collector's household, a liv- ing environment transferred in its entirety to a gallery space. Ettore Sottsass founded Memphis in 1980 together with former colleagues from Studio Alchimia and a younger generation of architects and designers. In 1981 it counted among its members Michele de Luc- chi, Matteo Thun, Marco Zanini, Aldo Cibic, Andrea Branzi, Shiro Kuramata, Michael Graves, Javier Mariscal, Barbara Radice, Martine Bedin, George J. Sowden, Masanori Umeda and Nathalie du Pasquier. Memphis, named after a Bob Dylan’s song: Stuck Inside of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again, was a successful attempt to kickstart a radical change and emancipation from the international Modernist Style of the 1960s. -

Serpentine Gallery Pavilion Commission
José Selgas & Lucía Cano There is no budget for the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion commission. It is paid for by sponsorship, sponsorship help-in-kind, and the sale of the finished structure, which does not cover more than 40% of its cost. The Serpentine Gallery collaborates with a range of companies and individuals whose support makes it possible to realise the Pavilion. Serpentine Gallery Pavilion Commission The Serpentine Gallery Pavilion commission was conceived by Serpentine Gallery Director, Julia Peyton-Jones, in 2000. It is an ongoing programme of temporary structures by internationally acclaimed architects and designers. It is unique worldwide and presents the work of an international architect or design team who, at the time of the Serpentine Gallery's invitation, has not completed a building in England. Each Pavilion is sited on the Gallery’s lawn for three months and the immediacy of the process – a maximum of six months from invitation to completion – provides a peerless model for commissioning architecture. Park Nights, the Gallery’s acclaimed programme of public talks and events, will take place in Sejima and Nishizawa’s (SANAA’s) Pavilion, and will culminate in the annual Marathon event that takes place in October. In 2006 the Park Nights programme included the now legendary 24-hour Serpentine Gallery Interview Marathon, convened by Hans Ulrich Obrist and architect Rem Koolhaas, which was followed, in 2007, by the Serpentine Gallery Experiment Marathon presented by artist Olafur Eliasson and Obrist, which featured experiments performed by leading artists and scientists. In 2008, Obrist led over 60 participants in the Serpentine Gallery Manifesto Marathon. -

Journal Series 2017 Adam Swinburn NSW Architects Registration Board A 2 NSW Architects Registration Board A The Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarships Journal Series is a select library of research compiled by more than 160 architects, students and graduates since 1951, and made possible by the generous gift of Sydney Architect and educator, Byera Hadley. Byera Hadley, born in 1872, was a distinguished architect responsible for the design and execution of a number of fine buildings in New South Wales. He was dedicated to architectural education, both as a part-time teacher in architectural drawing at the Sydney Technical College, and culminating in his appointment in 1914 as Lecturer-in-Charge at the College’s Department of Architecture. Under his guidance, the College became acknowledged as one of the finest schools of architecture in the British Empire. Byera Hadley made provision in his will for a bequest to enable graduates of architecture from a university in NSW to travel in order to broaden their experience in architecture, with a view to advancing architecture upon their return to Australia. Today, the Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarship fund is managed by Perpetual as Trustee, in conjunction with the NSW Architects Registration Board.
