ROSH HASHANA SCHEDULE FROM OUR RABBI
Covid-19 restrictions are in place for all services at the TBDJ Dear TBDJ Family, building. When davening at home, it is preferrable to do so at the same time as the rest of the community. Rifki and I extend our warmest Rosh Hashana greetings to you and your families as we Friday, September 18 / Erev Rosh Hashana begin this most unusual of Holiday experiences together. Some of you will be joining us in the tent, some of you will be inside in the main shul, and some of you will be staying at 4:00pm Daf Yomi on Zoom home. But all of us are bound together by being part of this most special congregation and 6:30pm Minha - Minyane Sépharade Tent community for Rosh Hashana. 6:40pm Candle Lighting 6:45pm Mincha, Kabbalat Shabbat, Maariv The “Journey” you are holding in your hand is one of the manifestations of this wonderful in TBDJ Tent and Main Sanctuary family that TBDJ is. It contains everything you will need to make Rosh Hashana a meaningful 6:58pm Sh’kiah experience wherever you may be. There are numerous articles from our clergy and lay 7:15pm Arvit et Kabbalat Shabbat - leadership, a special thank you to our recently retired Executive Director Joyce Reinblatt, Minyane Sépharade Tent inspiring words of Torah from our own members as well as from students studying in Israel, the year in review in pictures, and even a section especially designed for kids. It also Shabbat, September 19 / 1 Tishrei 5781 contains two wonderful tributes to our long time members Ben and Sylvia Levitt and Lionel 9:42am Sof Zman Kriyat Sh’ma and Suzanne Rabinovitch! Additionally we have included a step by step guide for navigating Shacharit Services for those who have registered: the Holiday for those at home. And of course, don’t forget the delicious honey cake to add a 7:30am Minyan 1 - TBDJ Tent little sweetness to your Holiday table! 8:00am Minyan 2 - Applewood Tent I would especially like to highlight that “Journey” has been sponsored by Sharon and 8:30am Minyan 3 - Main Sanctuary Robert Hecht in memory of Sharon’s father, Harry Karpman, z”l. Harry was one of the most 8:30am Minyane Sépharade Tent committed and dedicated TBDJ members the shul has ever known. From the moment 10:30am Minyan 4 - TBDJ Tent he moved to CSL in the 1960’s Harry was synonymous with everything TBDJ. He was a 11:00am Minyan 5 - Applewood Tent fundraiser par excellence who never took no for an answer and was as concerned with 6:30pm Mincha and Maariv the needs of every individual as he was with the organization as a whole. Indeed, he in TBDJ Tent and Main Sanctuary dedicated so much of his heart and soul to the Baily shul that his family saw fit to engrave 6:30pm Minha - Minyane Sépharade Tent his headstone with the TBDJ insignia to forever eternalize his connection to our community. 6:57pm Shkiah This year, when so many of us have been physically distanced yet more connected to the 7:41pm Candles should be lit after this time shul than ever before, it is most fitting to dedicate Journey to his memory. Sunday September 20 / 2 Tishrei 5781 I would like to acknowledge our Immediate Past President Judah Aspler for his tireless 9:43am Sof Zman Kriyat Sh’ma work on Journey. From start to finish, this project is his baby and he has once again done Shacharit Services for those who have registered: a phenomenal job with it. I again would like to thank our current President Jon Gal and 7:30am Minyan 1 - TBDJ Tent incoming President Josh Orzech for the indescribable amount of work that went into getting 8:00am Minyan 2 - Applewood Tent our shul ready for Rosh Hashana. It is an absolute honour and pleasure working with all 8:30am Minyan 3 - Main Sanctuary three of you. 8:30am Minyane Sépharade Tent Rifki and I are already saddened at the thought of not being able to greet you all in person 10:30am Minyan 4 - TBDJ Tent at TBDJ over the Holidays. Rosh Hashana at TBDJ has proven to be such a wonderful part of 11:00am Minyan 5 - Applewood Tent our Baily experience. We pray that we will soon be able to return to normal shul functioning 6:20pm Shofar (40) at TBDJ Tent in good health, and that we will once again have the opportunity to celebrate with all of you 6:35pm Mincha and Maariv in person. in TBDJ Tent and Main Sanctuary We wish you all a wonderful Yom Tov in good health. Shana Tova! 6:45pm Minha - Minyane Sépharade Tent 6:55pm Shkiah 7:39pm Havdala 7:39pm Arvit - Minyane Sépharade Tent 8:30pm Daf Yomi on Zoom Rosh Hashanah at Home A day by day, step by step Guide For Rosh Hashanah 2020/5781 Prepared by Rabbi Yechezkel Freundlich
THURSDAY NIGHT, September 17th • Rosh Hashana sermon with Rabbi Freundlich, TBDJ Zoom, 8:00pm
FRIDAY MORNING AND EVENING, September 18th • Hatarat Nedarim (annulling of vows) is traditionally performed on erev Rosh Hashana. A zoom session will be available at 9:00am • Candlelighting is at 6:40pm. The bracha is made for Shabbat and Yom Tov together. Shehechiyanu is also recited. • Mincha/Kabbalat Shabbat, inside the Main Sanctuary and in the TBDJ Tent, at 6:45pm. It is ideal to daven at home at the same time as the community. • An abridged Kabbalat Shabbat is recited, beginning with “Mizmor Shiur l’yom haShabbat” (p 46) (לשנה טובה תכתב ותחתם) Traditional Rosh Hashana Greeting: L’shana tova tikateiv v’teichatem • • Many have the custom to sing shalom aleichem and aishet chayal when Shabbat coincides with Yom Tov; others do not. and phrases inserted (יום הששי) Rosh Hashana kiddush is recited (p. 94 in Artscroll), with the additional paragraph • for Shabbat. Shechiyanu is recited. • Traditional simanim are eaten at the meal, together with corresponding prayers for health and blessings. .are added (יעלה ויבא) and Rosh Hashana ( רצה) In Birkat Hamzon, insertions for both Shabbat •
SHABBAT – ROSH HASHANA DAY 1, September 19th • Latest time to recite shema is 9:42am • Include insertions for Shabbat into the shacharit Shmoneh Esrei. Remember as well to recite “zachreinu lchaim” and “mi chomocha” (296, 298 Artscroll) • For one davening at home, there is obviously no repetition of the shmoneh esrei by the chazan, but one can say the .by oneself (לאל עורך דין and ה' מלך) piyyutim on p. 328-330 • We do not recite Avinu Malkeinu on Shabbat. • It is appropriate to review the Torah reading even if one cannot be in shul. The story of Isaac’s miraculous birth to elderly parents, his circumcision, and the subsequent exile of Yishmael can be found on page 402 (Artscroll). The Sages record that it was on Rosh Hashana that the barren Sarah was remembered. • We do not blow the shofar on Shabbbat. • Mussaf shmoneh esrei can be found on p 448; remember to add Shabbat insertions. • It is appropriate to recite Unetaneh Tokef (p 480-482) even when praying by oneself. Similarly, one can recite v’kol maminim (p 490).
• Both mincha and seudat shlishit should be completed before sunset (6:56pm). Aveinu Malkeinu is NOT recited on Shabbat.
SATURDAY NIGHT – DAY 2 • Preparations for the Second Day should not begin until nightfall (7:41pm) • Candles should be lit after 7:41pm. The bracha is only for Yom Tov. Shechiyanu is recited again, and one should have in mind to include the new fruit which will be eaten during the meal. The fire should be taken from a pre- existing flame – either a 24 hour candle that was lit from before Yom or by holding a match against an oven or stovetop element that has been left on. One may not strike a match to create a new fire on Yom Tov. • Kiddush is the regular Rosh Hashana kiddush, with the additional paragraph for Havdallah (pg 96). Two candles are held together to make a bracha on the flame. Shechiyanu is recited at kiddush, having in mind to eat the new fruit. • It is customary to eat a new fruit immediately after kiddush (one makes a bracha on the fruit, but not a shechiyanu since that was just recited during kiddush). If one does not have a new fruit, one still recites shechiyanu during kiddush/candlelighting. • Some have the custom to eat the simanim again on the second night; others do not.
