My personal skills and qualities:

My experience to date has led me to become a hard-working, resilient and reflective practitioner. My ability to learn from mistakes and take on board constructive feedback has resulted in me becoming the teacher I am today. At school and university it was important that I had impeccable organisation skills due to my commitment to sport teams, assignment deadlines and a part time job. From my PGCE year I am able to effectively use my time to teach, plan and mark; all whilst creating a healthy social life and work balance. Playing rugby has given me the skills to lead and work within a team and to achieve common goals and objectives. My university course taught me to work and be independent in order to achieve my own success. All of these skills are helping me to develop in to the strong teacher I want to be.

My other interests and hobbies:

I have a keen interest in both history and the world around us. I often visit cities and places of historic value. I am an avid walker and in any spare time I try to get out and see different parts of the UK’s natural landscape. As well as being a rugby player, I love to watch and be involved in all sports from different areas around the globe. I enjoy reading and love to get engrossed in a good autobiography and find out more about important figures in my life.

My personal skills and qualities:

My work experience and employment have developed me into a confident and enthusiastic individual who has the ability to integrate well with staff and pupils to create and build strong relationships. This allows for the creation of a positive, safe and productive learning environment. I can produce stimulating schemes of work in all subject areas, creating a thought provoking and exciting learning environment. The creative aspects of my teaching have enabled pupils to become self-motivated and engaged. My experiences in contrasting schools in a variety of environments demonstrate an ability to be flexible and adaptable in demanding and different situations. Experience of different cultures where a first language was not shared developed important communication and interpersonal skills such as speaking and listening.

My other interests and hobbies:

To experience an abundance of different cultures has always been attractive to me. The initial spark to travel developed through personal research and travel experiences in my own education. My opportunities have allowed me to experience a wide diversity of culture across a range of different countries and through fully immersing myself in contrasting environments I have developed personal qualities which have been beneficial for me as an individual and inevitably led me to where I am today. I want to share these experiences with the students I teach so that they understand the importance of different cultures and of stretching themselves as individuals. I have been involved in sports teams throughout my life, predominantly football teams, but most recently taking up squash as an extra-curricular activity. The sports I am involved in have great importance to me as they are a continual reminder of the basic ethos which I can apply within a scholastic context, for example teamwork, resilience and perseverance.

My personal skills and qualities:

I pride myself on my reflectiveness. I take time to consider what has worked well in my lessons and what has not worked so well. This applies to my wider life; I am sensitive to the importance of work-life balance, and often consider what is working well for me in my routine and what is not. This enables me to maintain a positive attitude to work, something which I believe is fundamentally important in teaching. A positive mindset is a key part of my character, which I endeavour to bring with me into the classroom. Linked closely with this is my belief in growth mindset, a concept which I thoroughly subscribe to. I believe that, with application, any individual is capable of any achievement, a belief which I strive to embed into everybody I work with. Developing effective working relationships with colleagues is something which I relish, as I am very keen to benefit from the experience of the wide range of individuals working in schools, both professionally and personally.

My other interests and hobbies:

I have a lifelong passion for physical activity, particularly football and cricket. This passion extends into the culture of sport, I enjoy talking about sport, reading about sporting issues throughout history and attending sporting events, as well as actively participating in my spare time. This is something I share with pupils, enquiring into their own sporting lives and discussing mutual sporting heroes. Reading is another lifelong passion. I believe that reading allows relaxation and escapism. It often inspires new passions in my life, such as chess. The versatility of my interest in books means I can relate to all different types of pupils and have thoroughly enjoyed recommending and discussing all different kinds of books with pupils from different classes in my first placement.

14 | Primary Profiles 2020-2021 WHAT HAS BEEN SAID ABOUT OUR NQTS?

Each year we track the progress of our NQTs in order to identify strengths and areas for development to inform future programme planning. Below are some comments from employing schools.

Stephen dresses professionally, behaves professionally Just a quick email to say that we are thrilled with and has already contributed greatly to wider learning the way Ben has settled into our staff. I have the opportunities for children. His behaviour management is pleasure of being his NQT mentor and in his first term excellent and his lesson delivery has pace, his expectations I have observed some super lessons. Our children of children are high. He has been an asset to the school are so enthusiastic and are gaining so much from his team short targeted daily lessons of 30 minutes duration. (Barbara Middleton, Head Teacher, Shiremoor Primary They simply love PE (Joanne Jones, Deputy Head School) Teacher, Thornhill Primary School)

Adam has proved to be not only a real asset to the Southridge team, but a ‘breath of fresh air’. He has continued to prove to be an enthusiastic, self-motivated and highly skilled NQT, and I firmly believe that it was the right decision to appoint him within the school in which he trained. He demonstrates a flexible, creative, and resilient approach to the teaching and learning of all children. He is focused on meeting his long term aims of being an effective educator and outstanding teacher, listening to and acting immediately on advice given. He has already brought his own innovative ideas to the forefront to change the school’s house point system, implemented see-saw assessment in PE and has encouraged all pupils as well as staff to run a mile a day, resulting in happier, healthier children who are eager to learn (Sharon McIntosh, Assistant Head Teacher, Southridge First School)

Stephen has settled into life at Southridge extremely Jennie has good subject knowledge in all of well. Both the head teacher and myself are extremely the subjects she teaches – her knowledge and pleased with his progress and how impressively he has enthusiasm for teaching Maths is engaging and is upheld his professional standards ensuring that he has one of her strengths (Sandra Marshall, Deputy developed a good working relationship with colleagues Head Teacher, New York Primary School) and also an appropriate open door relationship with parents to feedback informal and formal information about their children (Sharon McIntosh, Assistant Head Teacher, Southridge First School)

Nathan brought a good range of relevant teaching and learning strategies from his prior training which enabled him to demonstrate Stuart had already established good relationships strengths in many aspects of teaching (Jane with staff and children at Brandling. He was aware Grey, NQT Mentor, James Calvert Spence of our systems, rules and expectations. This meant College) he could hit the ground running. It was clear from his training year that Stuart had received excellent training and preparation. The high expectations from the course and ourselves clearly worked well together (Kevin Hodgson, NQT Mentor, Brandling Primary School)

15 | Primary Profiles 2020-2021 WHAT ROLES DO OUR NQTS TAKE ON?

Our trainees are normally employed as class teachers or a combination of a class teacher and a physical education teacher.

Occasionally they are employed specifically as a physical education teacher. A significant number of them take on the role of Physical Education Coordinator in their second year or third year; where they do we are able to offer subject specific leadership CPD.

16 | Primary Profiles 2020-2021 PE AND SPORT PREMIUM FUNDING

Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of their PE, physical activity and sport. This means that they should use the premium to:

• Develop or add to the PE, physical activity and sport that the school already offers • Build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years

Schools should use the premium to secure improvements in the following 5 key indicators:

• The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity - the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school • The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement • Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport • Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils • Increased participation in competitive sport
