Six Indian sites added to UNESCO heritage sites list

Six of ’s heritage sites have made it to UNESCO’s tentative list. These sites include –

1.Varanasi’s ghats along the Ganges

Ghats in Varanasi are riverfront steps leading to the banks of the River Ganges. The city has 88 ghats. Most of the ghats are bathing and puja ceremony ghats, while two ghats, Manikarnika and Harishchandra, are used exclusively as cremation sites

2.Kanchipuram Temple in Tamil Nadu

Kānchipuram or Kāncheepuram, is a famous temple city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It served as the capital city of the Pallava Kingdom. It is also known as “The City of Thousand Temples”. Kānchipuram is considered one of the seven holiest cities to the Hindus of India.

Satpura Tiger Reserve (STR) also known as Satpura National Park is located in the (newly named Narmadapuram ) of in India. Its name is derived from the . It covers an area of 524 km2 (202 sq mi). It was setup in 1981.

4. in Madhya Pradesh

kilometres (6.2 mi) west of Gangavati town in Koppal district and 35 kilometres (22 mi) from Hospet city. It contains roughly 400 megalithic funerary monuments, dated to the transition period between Neolithic and the Iron Age periods.

The Government had sent a recommendation of nine sites, out of which six have been selected.

48 proposals have been sent from India. As per 2019 guidelines it is compulsory for selected sites to be first added in the tentative list before it is considered for final nomination.

UNESCO has already added 30 of India’s cultural sites, 7 natural, and 1 mixed site. This includes Agra Fort, Ajanta Caves, Elephanta caves, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, and the Jaipur City of Rajasthan. The list of Natural sites includes Great Himalayan National Park Conservation Area, Kaziranga National Park, Keoladeo National Park, Manas Wildlife Sanctuary, Nanda Devi, and Valley of Flowers National Parks, Sundarbans National Park, and Western Ghats.

Apart from the heritage sites, the tentative list also includes activities, news, and events of India. Previously added 42 historic locations include Temples of Bishnupur in West Bengal, Mattanchery Palace, Ernakulam in Kerala, Group of Monuments at Mandu in Madhya Pradesh, Ancient Buddhist Site, Sarnath of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Sri Harimandir Sahib of Punjab, and River Island of Majuli in midstream of Brahmaputra River in Assam.
