From the President

By the time you read the June Hyde Parker, the season will be in full swing (pun intended). Eric O’Bryan, our General Manager, informs me that things are running smoothly at the club and activity is at an all-time high. Golf Rounds, tournaments, dining and special events are all up significantly. In last month’s newsletter, I asked you to try something new and use club facilities more often, and I thank you for doing just that. The vibes around the club are good these days, and it’s not lost on me that you, the members, create the vibes.

I have heard from a number of you that your dining experience has improved. While Chef Ralph has been on board now for less than 100 days, members have told me the following:  We like the offerings in the new menu – especially the fish items (butter crusted sea bass, fish tacos, & soft shell crabs)  We like to know that favorites from the past are available (the Maurice salad & Hyde Park steak sandwich)  The steaks are very much improved  We like the pre-made sandwiches in the snack bar  We like not getting “nickeled & dimed” for items like potato chips, refills, cheese on hamburgers  The grilled vegetable appetizer (not on menu) is awesome  The summer salads (build your own – if you like) are fabulous

We currently look at ways to improve the Club. It was determined at this time not to expand the Donald Ross Room into the Club Room until such a time we have a viable replacement for the Club Room. The Club Room (adjacent to the D.R. Room) while not as popular as the D.R. Room, serves a purpose for more formal occasions. A possible solution of the popularity of the D.R. Room may be to utilize the small bar area as additional informal dining. You will notice soon that the side porch area outside has a new look. We have added bar stools, tables and a flat screen to accommodate members waiting for a table or an area for a drink after Golf. It can also be used as a viewing area for swim meets.

Finally, in the Inaugural Drehs Cup honoring our head pro Larry Drehs, congratulations to Herb Conrard and his guest. Herb’s special victory comments said it all, “It is a great honor to play and win this Inaugural Tournament, especially since it honors our very esteemed pro Larry Drehs.” Well, I couldn’t agree more. It was a fabulous event to kick off the summer season honoring Larry.

Ron..

Dear Member,

Another Memorial Day has come and gone, and this one was truly memorable!

I am certain you have read my emails updating you on the progress following the electrical fire that occurred here at the Club Sunday, May 27th at 6:00 pm. So I will not bore you with the identical details, however, I believe reiterating a sincere gratitude to my staff for their efforts, continuous offers of assistance from members and your continued understanding and support is very deserving and always appreciated! Thank you.

The swim and dive teams are off and swimming/diving with the first meet being at Hyde Park on June 6th versus Triple Crown Country Club. The coaches are still accepting enthusiastic children to participate and have plenty of fun in store for the season as they capture the gold for the Hydros. Contact Lauren or Bryan today!

The fitness room expansion is 99% complete and continues to receive fantastic reviews and increased participation. Some re-arranging of equipment will take place, and the arrival of an additional Elliptical machine is scheduled to arrive later this fall. Come and enjoy and remain healthy at the same time!

I, we look forward to seeing you here at your Club as you partake in the fabulous offerings and amenities throughout the summer! Thank you.

Regards, Eric O'Bryan

Suggested Golf Reading From the HPGCC Golf Librarian’s Corner One Magical Sunday (But Winning Isn’t Everything) by: Phil Mickelson with Donald T. Phillips

If you are indeed a true golf enthusiast, you have to be thrilled with the events of the past few Sundays. Bubba wins his first major at storied Augusta National. Then, Rickie Fowler wins his first PGA Tour event, the Wells Fargo tournament, at tricky Quail Hollow. To top it off, how wonderful it was to watch the Kuchar family celebration on the 18th green of TPC Sawgrass, after winning the Tour Players Championship?

Another great family story is that of the Mickelson family. You probably would not be surprised to learn that on the front of Philip Alfred Mickelson’s birth announcement was a picture of a baby, (not Phil), carrying a golf bag, and, on the back was Phil’s first “tee time”, 3:45, June 16th. You probably wouldn’t be surprised either to learn that at age four (4), he won his first putting championship; against teenagers, none the less, at a week-long golf camp! And, to learn how to putt the speedy greens at Augusta, he got up on a pool table for a putting tip from none other than putting legend Ben Crenshaw! It’s a good thing for Phil that Cliff Roberts wasn’t alive or Phil would have been banished from the Masters as was “bikini wax” Gary McCord.

While much of the book is devoted to a hole by hole description of the final Sunday at the Masters, the pictures alone are worth taking the time to read this book. Throughout his story, the one thing that becomes quite clear is that Phil is devoted to his family, and, that his love of family started with parents and grandparents who loved and nurtured him in his development as a person. While we all witnessed that he can’t jump very high, and we all knew that he was a perennial runner-up in majors, until 2004, he knew first hand that “winning isn’t every- thing.”

This is a heartwarming story of a man who never gave up on himself, his family, or, the game to which he is so genuinely devoted. Oh, and by the way, there are, of course, quite a few references to Augusta National, from a slightly different angle than you see on television.

So now it’s on to the U. S. Open, the Open Championship and the PGA Championship. Let’s hope that the summer is as “colorful” and exciting as was this spring.

From the Chef

Happy summer time to all at Hyde Park Golf and Country Club.

With the summer kicking off and the porch now open, we would like to offer on Wednesday nights, barbeque night. Each week will differ with the offerings from barbeque pulled pork, chicken, baby back spare ribs to slow cooked beef brisket.

On Thursday nights, we will be offering a lighter menu in the way of entrée size salads. They will also differ each week to include roasted vegetables, grilled marinated vegetables, seasonal seafood for additions and of course, seasonal berries and fruit.

On Saturdays, we will be featuring steak and seafood night. Each week we will be offering fresh seasonal seafood from Florida, Alaska and the gulf waters. Steaks will include cowboy ribeyes, porterhouse steaks, Delmonico cuts and T-bone to name a few.

With the pool now open, the snack shack is in full gear for the golf side. The beverage cart will now be offering sandwich wraps during the daytime.

Also starting in June, we will be offering a make-your-own deli buffet lunch in the grill room from 11:30am to 2:00pm. It will have deli meats, cheese, salads, soup, chips and cookies. We call it our “golf express lunch.”

For our summertime porch diners, we will be adding daily entrée salad features and having a list of add-ons so you can build the salad en- trée to your desire. We will be offering many different selections through-out the summer.

We hope that you have a great summer, and look forward to seeing you this season.

FITNESS 101

by Paul Bodenbach

Our new improved fitness facility has something for everyone! The additional space has allowed for a much greater range of equipment. There are three new leg machines, new multi-purpose benches and numerous types of gravita- tional enhancement devices. There are also additional aerobic conditioning machines and devices specifically for flexibility and range of motion. The variety of equipment assures that anyone can get a complete workout with a little imagination. If you haven’t had the opportunity to see the additions to the facility at least take a few minutes to see it. Hopefully it saves you some time and money by consolidating your activities at Hyde Park and dropping that other gym membership!

In order to help you initiate a program in our new facility I am available to orient you to all of the equipment and its proper use. I realize that a major factor in beginning a fitness routine is not knowing what to do, how much to do and how often to do it. No matter your current fitness level we can work together to develop a program that is good for you. Also, for those who are concerned about the pain involved with “getting in shape” a plan starting you at the proper level and gently progressing will eliminate that pain. In fact, you will actually feel much better. Additionally, for those who work out regularly and need a new routine or to be encouraged to reach the next level, I would be happy to provide those services to you.

No matter what your fitness level I encourage everyone to stop in a few minutes before golf or tennis, warm up and get into the stretch station. You will feel much better and be better prepared to play.

Around the Grounds

The golf season is in full-swing, signaling the increased maintenance practices around the grounds and golf course at Hyde Park. The grounds staff has many returning members this season along with some new faces. The Grounds staff has done fantastic job in providing an excellent product across the entire property and it will only get better as training and practical experience continues. Some of the current initiatives that the Ground’s Staff and I are involved with are:

 Mary and Diane are placing the final touches on the summer annual plantings  Development of capital project budgets  Tree Management –pruning and or removal of dead or dying trees  Irrigation system audits  Rough fertilization  Fairway fertilization  Leveling of low areas on fairways that hold water  Tee aerification  Deep-tine aeration on the fairways  Staff Training

We all look forward to the upcoming season, with the hope that Mother Nature will be somewhat forgiving on the turf with normal tempera- tures, whatever normal means! For the latest on course conditions and on-going projects, please follow us on twitter at pobrienhpgcc or the grounds department blog at www.hydeparkgolfandcountryclub.blogspot.com

Thank-you,

Guests welcome. 18 Holers News by Carole Albers

It’s May, and each week a few more ladies join us on Tuesday.

May 1st’s event was Team Low Putts. Everyone was putting well that day. There was a three-way tie and, after a score card play-off, the winners were; 1st Place M. Fehr, J. Dorger, M. Heekin, L. Little 24 2nd Place S. Donovan, E. Irwin, K. Herkamp, B. Bennie 24 3rd Place S. Dempsey, M. Cardone, L. Underhill, P. Grote 24

Our Twosome Tournament was a one day event this year because of rain. So, on May 15, the format was each two-person team counted one score on the front nine and two scores on the back nine and used the Stableford system. Does that make sense? The winners were: Front Nine: 1st P. Thomas and C. Matteucci 22 2nd E. Irwin and S. Donovan 21 Back Nine: 1st L. Little and G. Walker 30 2nd L. Lamacchia and M. Homan 29 Over-all: 1st C. Conners and K. Herkamp 58 2nd L. Groenke and L. Nurre 57 3rd R. Obial and Sue Arnold 53

Sue Arnold and Renee Obial were the Chairwomen of the day. They planned a delicious luncheon with an Asian flair which includ- ed lettuce wraps of chicken, tasty rice and ginger ice cream for dessert. The tables were decorated with lovely flowers arranged in various pink Chinese vases which they borrowed for a few hours from the cabinets in the dining room at Hyde Park Country Club.

Team Flags was the event for May 22 it was lots of fun, I heard, since I was unable to attend. As each team reached the greens, there were instructions on the flag telling what score or scores to count for that hole. For instance, use the score for the oldest player in the foursome or the scores for the two shortest women in the foursome. I am sorry I missed that day. The winners: 1st N. Derringer, K. Herkamp, J. Peck, S. Donovan 2nd B.J. Conrard, N. Shepardson, M. Fehr, L. Nurre 3rd G. Walker, M. Heekin, C. Matteucci, E. Cash

Nine Holers News May, 2012

May 2nd surprised everyone. After dangerous thunder and lightning storms and flash flood warnings the night before, playing golf seemed improbable. But play golf we did. No one likes “cart-path-only” golf but seeing the standing water and marsh-like conditions of the fairways, it was the proper decision. We all did some serious trekking! The Pros made the day somewhat less difficult by permitting lift-clean-and-place throughout the course. By the end of the round, most golfers were mud-splattered from the knees down.

The event was Three Blind Mice, in which 3 holes were randomly selected by the golf Pros to be thrown out. The remaining holes provid- ed a cluster of close scores. In a tie-breaker among three golfers at 27, Sandy Frey came in third place. In second with a 26 was Carolyn Bloomfield. Colleen Nardini placed first with a 24.

May 9, 2012 was another cart-path-only day after rain on Tuesday. Temps in the high 60’s, sunshine and cool breezes made for good golf weather. The conditions under our feet made the lift-clean-and-place policy in the fairways appreciated. Twenty-two golfers competed for prizes for fewest putts. In third place with 19 putts was Barb Bennie in a 3 way tie-breaker. Carla Matteucci placed second with 16 putts. Kathleen Wilkens won with 15 putts. Both Carla and Kathleen had attended the Putting Clinic conducted by the Golf Professionals. Imagine that!

May 16’s Pro’s Choice was a Progressive Best Ball event and it made for interesting scoring. A “blind” was needed for two twosomes. A random selection made Carolyn Bledsoe the blind. This is where it gets interesting. Carolyn’s “real” threesome would have placed third but…drum roll please… Carolyn’s score popped her “real” team out of third place and catapulted her blind threesome into third! Marshall said he had never seen that happen before. So, third place was won by Ellie Irwin, Nancy Shepardson and yes, Carolyn Bledsoe. In second place was the team of Carla Matteucci, Carolyn Bloomfield and Linda Spadaccini. The winners were Kathy Gamin, Jean Macejko and May Lou Motl.

The Foundation Cup was held May 23. This low net event was won by Colleen Nardini with a 32. She said she could thank her putter for her good round. Second place was taken by Linda Little in a tie score of 33 with Barb Bennie who was awarded third place. Colleen’s name will be engraved on the Foundation Cup at the end of the season.

Don’t forget the Member/ Guest on June 20th. Since the theme is The Olympics, each team should select a country to represent and dress accordingly. Celebrate your country’s flag colors, symbols or history and have fun with your wardrobe. A prize will be awarded to the team who best represents its country. Sign-up sheets are on the bulletin board in the Locker room. Don’t miss out on this fun day of golf.
