Mercy Hospital Foundation 2018 Report to the Community 2019 Mercy Hospital Foundation Foundation Staff Board of Directors Margaret N. Reese, Foundation President Bernie Cremers Celia Eckermann, Development Assistant Doug Davenport, Treasurer Michelle Marks, Administrative Assistant Scott Fisher Pat Heiden Todd Jacobson, Secretary Karla Kamal, Chair Sarah Leonard Mark Nolte Ann Perino, MD Catherine Pugh, Chair-Elect Margaret N. Reese Steve Scheckel, MD Sean Williams, Mercy President and CEO Thank you for your gifts to the Mercy Hospital Foundation in the last year!

We had a very busy 2018 with so much positive momentum. The Mercy Foundation was at the center of much of it, providing support to help the hospital continue moving forward. Throughout this annual Report to the Community you will find photos and information about some of our projects during the year, many of which would not have happened without your support and that of others who have made permanent investments in Mercy over the years.

One big change is our look. You’ll notice the new green colors and logo that proudly shows our affiliation to the MercyOne system in . What was formerly known as Mercy Health Network became MercyOne on February 1 of this year. The only thing that has changed for us at Mercy Iowa City is the logo and colors, and the fact that anyone can now see we are part of the largest health system in Iowa with more than 20,000 colleagues caring for more than a third of the state’s population.

Your gifts will continue to support only the Mercy Hospital Foundation and Mercy Iowa City. Giving remains local, but we will continue to benefit from our relationship with the statewide system and the expertise of our colleagues. When you see or hear commercials and ads for MercyOne, know that includes us!

With your support last year, the Mercy Hospital Foundation was able to fund the new Mercy Infusion Center in the hospital and you can find a picture of this on page 4. It and the new Mercy Iowa City Cancer Center office in the Mercy Medical Plaza opened to patients on May 6 with expanded hours and the ability to serve more patients. This wouldn’t have been possible without your generosity and we look forward to sharing more information and photos in the future.

As we write this letter to you in 2019, we know there will be many announcements of new plans and successes, including the new Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital scheduled to open in spring 2020, and we look forward to sharing those. In the meantime, we want to sincerely thank you for your support of Mercy Iowa City and its mission of providing care to all in the spirit of Jesus Christ and the Catholic tradition of the Sisters of Mercy. Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Karla Kamal, Chair Margaret N. Reese, President Mercy Hospital Foundation Mercy Foundation and Board of Directors, 2019 Director of Communications Mercy Iowa City

Mercy hospital Foundation 2018 Report to the community 1 Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital

The new Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital will be a freestanding 54,000-square-foot facility featuring 40 patient beds along with gymnasiums outfitted for high-tech therapy devices and treatments, a dedicated traumatic brain injury unit complete with monitored rooms, specialized beds and patient lifting equipment, and separate therapy and dining spaces. The hospital will also have a unit exclusively for stroke patients, rooms specially equipped for bariatric patients, and private, family-friendly rooms with sleeper chairs. Patients will have access to an apartment setting where they can practice daily living tasks before they return home, and pet therapy and community re-entry programs will help ease the transition back to home.

2 Mercy hospital Foundation 2018 Report to the community At a ceremony on a cold and blustery December 4, the Most Reverend Thomas Zinkula, of the Diocese of Davenport, blessed the land where the new Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital will be built adjacent to the Mercy Coral West building in Coralville.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital took place on April 17, 2019. The Mercy Hospital Foundation will raise funds this year to support a permanent outdoor courtyard and serenity garden for patients, families and colleagues to enjoy.

Mercy hospital Foundation 2018 Report to the community 3 Central Sterilizing Remodel With your help the Mercy Hospital Foundation was able to give the hospital more than $600,000 in 2018 to remodel and add equipment to Central Sterilizing (pictured here) and purchase additional surgical instruments for General, Orthopedic, Gynecologic and Cardiovascular surgeries. When the hospital and medical staff decided to alter the process for scheduling surgical procedures to reduce both the wait time between, and add more surgeries to the schedule each day, they asked the Foundation for help. Adding more procedures and reducing time between them required the purchase of many new surgical instruments, which meant updates in Central Sterilizing to be able to process those additional instruments. With support from the Mercy Hospital Foundation the changes were made quickly, resulting in a more efficient process for the surgical teams and better access for patients.

Mercy Infusion Center Construction of the new Mercy Infusion Center began in 2018. It was made possible by gifts to the Mercy Hospital Foundation which funded the entire area. The Infusion Center will care for patients receiving medications through a port or intravenously who had previously been treated in Mercy Medical Oncology or other areas of the DAISY Awards hospital for non-cancer medical conditions. Mercy hospital Foundation 2018 Report to the community 5 Mercy Guest Lodging The Mercy Guild continued its refresh of Mercy Guest Lodging during the year by replacing the flooring throughout, adding more homelike furnishings to the common area and updating the 15 guest rooms. The Guest Lodging area was created by the Mercy Guild in 1995, offering rooms to patients and families for only $35 per night. Stays in the last year ranged from one night to two months. The Mercy Guild manages the space that is staffed by volunteers during the week, making it a convenient option for outpatients who receive ongoing daily treatment in areas like the Mercy Wound and Vein Center or who have a very early procedure scheduled and find it more convenient to stay the night before, and family members who cannot travel back and forth from home while a loved one is hospitalized.

Support for Cancer Patients Generous support from TEAM Breast Friends and others means that women who cannot afford mammograms or other diagnostic tests for early detection of breast cancer can receive them at Mercy. Gifts from TEAM Breast Friends, who raise funds through an annual 5K run/ walk, plant sale, golf outing and more, also help Mercy to provide education about early detection and cancer treatment.

6 Mercy hospital Foundation 2018 Report to the community Support for the Chapel Thanks to a gift from the family of a patient, a new crucifix, hand carved in Italy (left), was installed in the hospital chapel. Because of a bequest, large print bibles (below) were acquired by Pastoral Care and are available to patients who request them.

Scholarships Each year the Mercy Hospital Foundation selects ten outstanding students from high schools in Mercy’s ten county service area to receive Health Careers Scholarships to support them during their undergraduate years preparing for a career in a health care field.
