GULF TIMES www. gulf-times.com 2 Riyals Residents reiterate support to Emir

In brief

ARAB WORLD | Confl ict Two Russian soldiers killed in east Syria Two Russian soldiers have been killed by artillery fire from the Islamic State group in Syria’s eastern province of Deir Ezzor, where the army is battling militants, Russia’s defence ministry said yesterday. One serviceman was killed instantly and a second died from his wounds in hospital, according to a ministry statement quoted by Russian news agencies. The soldiers were travelling with a convoy that was hit by “mortar fire from IS terrorists”, according to the ministry. Moscow announced earlier yesterday that it was providing support to Syrian government forces in their push to take Deir Ezzor, one of the last remaining cities controlled by the militants. Russia intervened in Syria’s six-year- old civil war in September 2015 on the side of President Bashar al-Assad’s government, and has conducted thousands of air strikes against targets it labels as “terrorists”. A new giant billboard with portraits of His Highness the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was installed beside Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim al-Thani Majlis at Gharrafa yesterday. The site was visited among others by prominent Qatari entrepreneur Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim al-Thani and Dr Sheikh Mohamed bin Hamad al-Thani, director of Public Health at the Ministry of Public Health. Libyan Prime Minister Fayez al-Seraj and the divided na- tion’s eastern commander Kha- lifa Haftar in July committed to a conditional ceasefi re and to work towards elections, but the agreement did not include other key factions. Western govern- ments, worried about militants and smugglers thriving in Libya’s chaos, are pushing a broader UN-backed deal to unify Libya and end the instability that has weakened the country since the 2011 fall of Muammar Gaddafi . Brazil breaks up cocaine ring: police

Brazilian police fanned out across five states and the capital early yesterday to smash an international drugs traff icking ring that allegedly shipped six tonnes of cocaine to Europe in the last year alone. More than 800 off icers deployed to serve 127 arrest warrants and 190 search warrants in the operation centred on Latin America’s biggest city, Sao Paulo, police said in a statement. According to police, Sao Paulo served as the warehouse for cocaine from producing countries before the drug was sent by ship from the city’s port, Santos, to markets in Europe. Arrests were also being made in Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina, Parana, Rio Grande do Sul and the Federal District where the capital Brasilia is located. The investigation began in August 2016 after Brazilian law enforcement and the US Drug Enforcement Agency began looking into five drug seizures made over the previous year in Santos and at a shipment from Santos to a Russian port, police said. That probe led to the uncovering of a criminal web in Brazil and Europe that used Sao Paulo as its main hub. In the course of the next 12 months, Brazilian police say they made 14 cocaine seizures and were able to tip off A view of Moai statues at “Tongariki” bay at Easter Island, Chile.
