AMERICAN IDOL JUDGES RANKED! AMERICAN IDOL RANDY JACKSON COMES IN AT NUMBER 3 TAKES ITS FINAL BOW

Jackie Kennedy in her signature sunwear during her time as first lady.

#3 RANDY JACKSON (seasons 1-13)

The Dawg was one of the original three judges from the beginning of American Idol. He lasted so long that his catchphrases (“in it to win it”) and descriptions (“pitchy”) became something we all knew too well. The noted and producer generally knew his stuff and, unlike so many of the judges, rarely made the moment about himself.

MEMORABLE MOMENT When James Lewis delivered a truly terrible audition of “Go Down Moses” in Season 7, Jackson and Paula Abdul couldn’t stop laughing, but in true Jackson style, he asks for forgiveness from Lewis and tells him, “This is not your thing, dawg.” 6 As Seen In/January 2016

Randy Jackson looks back on 15 years of American Idol (and the elimination that still pains him) Plus, why the original judges’ panel reigned supreme

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: A lot of the success of the show over the past 15 years can be attributed to the fact that the original trio of judges was overflowing with chemistry. Did you know each other before the show started? RANDY JACKSON: I had known Paula [Abdul] for years and I had met [Simon] Cowell once or twice because we were both record company guys. Yeah, it was lightning in a bottle but I’ll tell you what, we really lucked out because none of us knew that we could have that chemistry. It was instant. But there What’s your favorite performance ever? were growing pains. The first day on set — So many. Kelly Clarkson, the finale of that the first hour — there was a dustup with all first season. Clay and Reuben, that finale, three of us because we couldn’t believe how Fantasia singing “Summertime.” But Jordin crazy Simon went on this once contestant. Sparks had a moment, for me, when she “You’re horrible, you’re terrible.” We were like, auditioned for us in Seattle. We looked at you can’t say this guy’s horrible! You can say each other — me, Simon, and Paula — and his voice is horrible, but you can’t say that he were like, “Where have you been?!” And she is! So we stopped for like, two hours, had this said, “I’ve auditioned three times but I never whole powwow. We had some growing pains made it in front of the judges.” And we were but Simon was who he was and we were who just like, “What?!” we were, you know. And that was the season that you guys You fell in the middle of Paula and Simon really hated the Seattle auditions, right? in terms of judging style. What were your Yeah! But Jordin was incredible and of course goals heading into that first season? went on to win the whole thing. You know, I just really wanted to be honest. I wanted there are just so many memories like that. I to be somewhat encouraging but if you’re think of the first time we saw Kelly Clarkson really delusional and have a terrible talent I’m in , the first time we saw Carrie gonna say you have a terrible talent. But too Underwood. I mean, my God. I think back to many times I’ve seen somebody, years later, when we saw in , you know! turn around with some encouragement and We were shocked and surprised. And then become really good. If you think somebody there are some wild moments with some of has an inkling of talent, you want to inspire the funnier contestants. them and give them some real sound advice. 7 As Seen In/January 2016

I don’t think America will ever forget You’ve sat through countless auditions — . have any songs been completely ruined for Oh my God, that dude! That’s what I’m you? saying — he and his father and whomever Every season we banned songs. People were was handling him at the time really made a just killing , they were killing , go of it, really built a business. And he was a they were killing Mariah. People love and very smart kid. He made it work. It just goes admire those songs, but sometimes they’re to show that you can make something out of just so terrible it’s like, my God, come on, save almost nothing. Because he certainly didn’t yourself and save us. But Alicia Keys’ “Fallin’.” have a voice. [Laughs] Alicia, God bless you, but man, I don’t know what was goin’ on with them and your song. Is there an elimination that still pains you? was my wow card that year, What are your thoughts on the various and I was gutted when she got eliminated iterations of the judges’ table? because with her and Fantasia and LaToya, I’m of course biased, but I think me, Paula, it was like we had our own version of the and Simon was still the best ever — best ever Supremes up there. And it gutted me because of any judges ever on any kind of show like I really thought she could go all them way. this. ‘Cause we discovered some great talent But she’s proven that she could and she has. that has gone on to do some great things. But I think a lot of them have been good. Jen[nifer Lopez] and Keith [Urban] and Harry are good, and if you take away some of the antics that happened between Mariah, Nicki [Minaj], me, and Keith, I thought it was good. People always look at that season as a little bit negative but I think it was still valuable.

Once the show is off the air, what do you hope people remember about it in the years to come? Dude, that people had a good time. It’s like, one thing we’d always say is, nobody— including us—should take themselves too seriously. It’s only music. Songs and lyrics, lyrics and melodies. You know what I mean?

NATIONAL GLAUCOMA AWARENESS MONTH

January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month, an important time to spread the word about this sight stealing disease.

Currently, more than 3 million people in the have glaucoma. The National Eye Institute projects this number will reach 4.2 million by 2030, a 58 percent increase.

Glaucoma is called “the sneak thief of sight” since there are no symptoms and once vision is lost, it’s permanent. As much as 40% of vision can be lost without a person noticing. Glaucoma is the leading cause of preventable blindness. Moreover, among African American and populations, glaucoma is more prevalent. Glaucoma is 6 to 8 times more common in African Americans than Caucasians.

Over 3 million Americans, and over 60 million people worldwide, have glaucoma. Experts estimate that half of them don’t know they have it. Combined with our aging population, we can see an epidemic of blindness looming if we don’t raise awareness about the importance of regular eye examinations to preserve vision. The World Health Organization estimates that 4.5 million people worldwide are blind due to glaucoma. In the United States, approximately 120,000 are blind from glaucoma, accounting for 9% to 12% of all cases of blindness.

Here are three ways you can help raise awareness:

1. Talk to friends and family about glaucoma. If you have glaucoma, don’t keep it a secret. Let your family members know.

2. Refer a friend to our web site, www.glaucoma.org.

3. Request to have a free educational booklet sent to you or a friend.

Connect with us on Facebook or follow us on for regular updates on glaucoma research, treatments, news and information. Share information about glaucoma with your friends and family. 8 As Seen In/January 2016 9 As Seen In/January 2016

ANDERSON COOPER HELPS TELL STORY OF HIS ICONIC MOTHER, GLORIA VANDERBILT IN UPCOMING HBO FILM

Since he’s always asking people about their lives in his role as a CNN reporter, said it felt only natural that he do the same with his own life and that of his famous mother, Gloria Vanderbilt.

He also believes the upcoming HBO film, “Nothing Left Unsaid: Gloria Vanderbilt & Anderson Cooper,” can be a lesson to viewers not to miss an opportunity to learn as much as possible about their parents when they still have the opportunity.

There was much for Mr. Cooper to find out. His mother, born into one of the richest families in America and now 91, was the subject of a high-profile custody battle when she was a child. She dated stars like , famously launched a brand of designer jeans under her name and saw her son — Mr. Cooper’s older brother — commit suicide at age 23 by leaping from their penthouse in 1988.

“My mom has been in the public eye probably longer than anybody else alive,” Cooper said on Thursday. The film debuts April 9 on HBO. Cooper, 48, was the instigator of the project. He has been spending a lot of time over the past decade going through boxes of memorabilia, filled with art and letters, in her home. Cooper interviews his mother throughout the documentary, and he gives to filmmaker his own tapes of conversations with his mother though the years, when she was renown as a socialite, fashion designer and author. As an outsider, Ms. Garbus was able to make connections and observations that he would never have thought of, Cooper said. “I know my mom in a way I didn’t know her a year and a half ago when we started this process,” he said.

There is plenty of sadness in their lives, particularly the death of Anderson Cooper’s father at age 50, and Carter Cooper’s suicide in 1988. In a lengthy scene at the end of the movie, Cooper and his mother visit his grave on a winter day. To this day, the family doesn’t understand why he jumped, although he had begun treatment for depression in the weeks before his death. Despite the evident pain and her regrets, Ms. Vanderbilt said talking about her late son is a way to keep him alive to her. “If one is telling the truth, there is nothing to fear and it is very freeing,” she said. 16 As Seen In/January 2016
