CHAPEL CLEANER

The College of St George is a community of and established in 1348 charged with the maintenance of the Collegiate Chapel of St George, there to offer worship to Almighty God, and to make daily intercession for the Royal Family, the members of the Order of the Garter [of which the College is their spiritual home] and for all the faithful living and departed.

The Virger of the College is responsible to through the Canon , for the day to day operation of the Chapel. He is assisted by 2 Senior Sacristans, 3 part-time Sacristans, 1 part-time Cleaner and Voluntary Stewards.

The following information related to the post is taken from the particulars of employment, which will be given to you on appointment and confirmed after the probationary period of 3 months:

You will be appointed as a Chapel Cleaner to St George’s Chapel, Windsor:

 There will be a probationary period of 13 weeks  The salary is £10,400 per annum paid monthly  Necessary protective clothing will be provided  Your hours of work are no more than 80 per four week period, currently allocated in accordance with the Rota which operates over a 5 day week, 8.30am-12.30pm (currently Monday to Friday, but is flexible)  Annual leave is 25 days a year, pro rata  The Chapel has a contributory stakeholder Pension Scheme.

This appointment is non-residential.

1 DUTIES OF CHAPEL CLEANER

1.1 The Chapel cleaner plays a vital part in preparing the Chapel and maintaining it in a proper state for worship, and the many other related activities which take place within it.

1.2 The Chapel cleaner reports to the Virger, or in his absence, the duty Senior Sacristan. The Precentor has oversight responsibility for the Department and is directly responsible for liturgical matters. The Virger reports to the Chapter Clerk for some administrative matters.

2 CARE OF THE CHAPEL

2.1 Under the direction of the Virger or Senior Sacristan, working on a rota system, to be responsible for the cleaning of the Chapel. Duties will include, but are not limited to:

 vacuum cleaning all main areas of the Chapel;  care of cleaning equipment and monitoring of supplies.

3 LITURGICAL SERVICES, CONCERTS AND OTHER EVENTS

3.1 To assist in preparing the Chapel and Cloisters for worship and other events, and in restoring to normal afterwards. This includes lifting some heavy furniture. Duties will include, but are not limited to:

 arrangement of sanctuary furniture;  setting out seating areas according to agreed seating plans;  erection, dismantling and storage of staging;  erection, dismantling and storage of exhibitions.

4 SECURITY

At all times during your working hours keep a vigilant eye on the Chapel and its surrounds.

5 HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK

5.1 To be familiar with the and Canons Safety Policy. 5.2 To know the positions of all fire fighting apparatus and what to do in an emergency. 5.3 To be familiar with the evacuation procedures laid down by the Dean and Canons. 5.4 To see that the conditions of work and areas accessible to staff and public are kept in safe order and condition, and report any hazards to the Duty person.

6 GOOD ORDER

6.1 To assist in the maintenance of good public relations, particularly with visitors, and to ensure that decorum is maintained within the Chapel at all times.

6.2 To treat visitors and helpers in a friendly, tactful and helpful manner. When it is necessary to be firm it should be done with courtesy.

6.3 To communicate all messages and report all defects to the Virger or Duty person so that appropriate advice or action can be taken.

7 OTHER

7.1 Although primarily working as a Chapel cleaner, you may be called upon from time to time to assist the Virger in their ceremonial and liturgical duties or help in other ways to achieve the satisfactory operation of the Chapel.

7.2 To attend such training sessions and courses as may be required which may include:  Manual Handling;  First Aid;  Fire & Evacuation.

Performing such other reasonable duties as required by the Virger or Senior Sacristans.

7.3 To attend regular departmental meetings.
