THE TO ACCOMPANY "POWAQOATSI," A SILENT FILM

Composer Philip Glass, the renowned originator of such musical scores as "," and "," for ; "," and "The Thin Blue Line," for film, and "A Descent into the Maelstrom," for dance, will conduct the Philip Glass Ensemble at 8 p.m. Friday, March 26, in the Mandeville Auditorium at the University of California, San Diego. Glass' group will accompany the silent film, "Powaqqatsi."

Tickets for this event are $20/23 for general admission and $17/19 for students, and may be purchased at the UCSD Price Center Box Office or from TicketMaster outlets.

The film, "Powaqqatsi," is the second one in the Reggio "Qatsi" trilogy --"Qatsi" being the Hopi word for "life." The film bears some similarities to "Koyaanisqatsi," as both films are without plot or dialogue, and scored by Glass. The films show a time-lapse photography technique focusing on various lifestyles, world scenes and situations.

"Powaqqatsi" focuses on the transitions of societies from agriculture to techo-urban cultures, and what has been lost in the transition.

Composer Glass' project, "Powaqqatsi Live!" was premiered in 1990 at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, for the "Serious Fun!" festival, in .

Glass' most recent work was a chamber opera based on the film, "," by Jean Cocteau, commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera for its 1992 season.

This event is brought to San Diego by the UCSD University Events Office. For more information call 534-4090.
