We recognise that all students have different strengths, aptitudes, interests, areas for development and preferred ways of learning. Our curriculum caters for all, providing opportunities for students to show off their talents, experience success and achieve in all areas of learning.

Years 7 and 8 All our students follow the National Curriculum and study a range of subjects. Both academic knowledge and practical experience are key priorities. English, Maths and ICT proficiency underpins the delivery of our curriculum and through our broad and challenging range of subjects, we also develop and nurture social, moral and cultural interests.

Towards the end of Year 8 students are supported in making decisions about their GCSE pathways. This enables them to develop a more specialised programme of study; tailored to their individual interests, career aims and aspirations.

Able, gifted and talented Able, gifted and talented students are given plenty of opportunity to be stretched and challenged to ensure they reach or exceed their potential. This includes studying Further Maths, triple Science and the full suite of subjects for the English Baccalaureate qualification.

They can also become part of our Pendle Elite programme – a unique training programme set up by Nelson and Colne College, to develop students over three years to help them prepare for college, progress to top universities in the country and, ultimately, reach their career aspirations.

Throughout their GCSE studies, which begin in Year 9, all students continue to follow a broad and balanced curriculum. This comprises of the core subjects English, Maths, Science, ICT, Ethics, PSHE and PE which are complemented by a personal pathway of options, catering for all interests and abilities and providing students with new and exciting learning opportunities. The options available are currently Art, Business Studies, Computing, Drama, Ethics and Philosophy, French, Polish, Geography, History, Music, PE and Psychology. We also offer Triple Science and Additional Maths – for students who excel in Science or Mathematics, as a strong foundation for A Levels and university.

At Colne Primet Academy, we are proud to have a team of staff who are 100% dedicated to our students, providing vast amounts of experience, enthusiasm and new ideas to continually improve our Academy.

Lessons at Colne Primet Academy are lively and engaging and we work hard to make sure that each child is given the chance to shine. We value each student’s individual achievements, which builds their confidence and encourages a love of learning which we hope will stay with them for a lifetime. Students are formally assessed throughout the year on a 1-8 attitudes to learning scale. Part of student success is due to developing skills, values, and work ethic.

The curriculum in our school is driven by a career focus which leads to secure, sustainable and valuable lifelong professions. Our students enjoy academic experiences which enable them to understand the impact of learning and how their efforts and hard work will be reflected in their future.

We encourage our students to think about their career aspirations and understand the benefits of planning early in order to guarantee the best possible success. With strong links to local employers and a focus on careers, we ensure that our students’ ambitions are linked to careers which they will find both fulfilling, profitable and rewarding.

Employer involvement in our curriculum adds that ‘extra’ value to our students’ educational experience. Students benefit from trips, visits and mentoring, in addition to enterprise projects, work experience and employability skills.

Those students wishing to move straight into the world of work will be guided through the transition from school into employment and receive help with CV writing and interview techniques; while those aiming at and even university study will gain the skills and qualifications needed to progress; plus an understanding of the world of employment and how to successfully secure the next step.

Employability Awards As part of our commitment to preparing our students for the world of work, all students in Year 10, complete their Employability Award. To achieve this award, students must have excellent attendance and punctuality throughout their time at the Academy, complete two week’s work experience with good reports from their employer, have a C.V. and have successfully had a mock interview with a local employer. Students can achieve Bronze, Silver and Gold awards.

Proud students celebrate GCSE success

Our students celebrated high achievement after receiving fantastic GCSE results. They particularly excelled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects this year, with 70% of students achieving a 4 or more in two or more Science subjects. There was a 22% increase in the number of students achieving a grade 9 – 5 in Trilogy Science. 64% of students achieved a 4 or more in Maths, an increase of 11% from 2018 and both English and Maths 9-5 grades improved by 14.5%. 100% of Level 2 Performing Arts students achieved a Pass and 58% of students achieved the equivalent of a 7-9 in PE. High achievers included Solphia Zhou who achieved a 9 in Chemistry and grade 8s in Maths, Geography, Biology and Physics, former Head Boy Jing Ta Zheng who received grade 8s in Geography, Biology and Chemistry and former Head Girl Ishaa Hussain who achieved grade 7s in English Language, English Literature and Chemistry.

Hat-trick of education award wins

Colne Primet Academy staff and students celebrated a hat-trick of award wins at the East Lancashire Newspapers Education Awards. Executive Principal Lynne Blomley was named the Headteacher of the Year at the annual awards and Teaching Assistant Cath Myers won the Education Support Award. Head Girl Ishaa Hussain was the winner of the Secondary School Pupil of the Year Award. The hat-trick of awards comes 12 months after the Academy was named Secondary School of the Year at the same event.

Students and staff at Colne Primet Academy are celebrating, after the school was awarded the Silver Artsmark status. Artsmark is the creative quality standard for schools; accredited by Arts Council and awarded to schools which actively champion high quality art and cultural education within their curriculum. Commenting on receiving Artsmark status, Executive Principal, Lynne Blomley, said: “I am delighted that the hard work and dedication of staff in providing high quality arts related experiences and opportunities within and beyond the core curriculum, has been recognised, and that students have responded so well to these opportunities as a key part of their self-development.”

Breakfast on the house at Primet

Students at Colne Primet Academy are enjoying the most impor- tant meal of the day with their friends thanks to the Academy being part of the National School Breakfast Programme which runs in partnership with Magic Breakfast and is funded by the Department for Education. All students are invited to have a free toasted bagel and drink of fruit juice before the start of the school day, to ensure they aren’t starting the day feeling hungry. Executive Principal, Lynne Blomley, said: “There is a well-known link between having a good breakfast and an improvement in learning which is why we think this programme is so important.”

Wellbeing mentor joins Primet

Colne Primet Academy has become one of the first two schools in Pendle to benefit from a new Burnley FC in the Community initiative. Sarah Roberts is working with the academy as a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (PWP) to encourage young people to talk about their mental health and open up the conversation in everyday life. She is part of a three year project led by Burnley FC in the Community which has been implemented in response to the increasing number of cases arising in schools of pupils suffering from mental health issues.

We are proud of the positive atmosphere that exists within the Academy. Visitors very often comment on the calm and orderly surroundings and the friendly and supportive environment we have created. We believe that high achievement comes as a result of a positive atmosphere, high expectations and mutual respect.

The House System Becoming a Student Ambassador Every student who attends Colne Primet Academy is a member Students will be given chances to represent the Academy of a ‘house’. Students at Colne Primet Academy have the opportunity to apply to take place in Nelson and Colne College’s Boat Race challenge for gifted and talented students. Students take part in a wide range of activities, including a visit to the University of Oxford.

At Colne Primet Academy we see ourselves as a learning community at the heart of the wider community and as such we encourage our students to be active citizens in their local community. We have a ‘Community Action Group’ consisting of student volunteers from across the year groups who volunteer their time and talents to serve their local community. For example, some students visit a local care home for the elderly to talk to the residents and join in activities with them as well as invite them to events at our Academy as V.I.Ps.

Building Bridges Local Charities All our students in Years 7 and 9 experience working on a ‘building bridges’ programme that explores the important issues around identity, culture and community and provides them with the opportunity to work as a team on a potentially winning community project. If selected as the winning project it is funded by the Building Bridges programme to run as an actual event with our students leading with their own design. Recently, Colne Primet Academy students won with a project designed to celebrate different cultures by bringing together people from different faiths and backgrounds to celebrate their traditional foods. This was a huge success and well received by the local community.

Students work hard to raise funds to support local charities such as Open Door, Pendle Hospice and Petal Cancer Fund.
