This year Steve Podborski will be joining us for what has become a tremendously successful event both as a fundraiser for athletics, and an entertaining evening.” Dr. Tom Traves, President, Dalhousie University Master of Ceremonies, Mr. Paul Hollingsworth Paul Hollingsworth is an anchor/reporter at CTV Atlantic and is the Halifax correspondent for SportsCentre, TSN’s flagship news and information program. Born and raised in Halifax, Hollingsworth’s career highlights include covering the World Series for the last eight years, the 2006 FIFA World Cup of Soccer in Germany, the 2004 and 2006 Stanley Cup playoffs, the 2003 IIHF World Junior Hockey championship where he won a Gemini award, the 2003 and 2010 Briers and the 2010 Super Bowl. Guest of Honour, Mr. Steve Podborski Recently named Canada’s chef de mission for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, Podborski was a member of the world-renowned ‘Crazy Canucks’. The ‘Crazy Canucks’ were famous for their high-flying top-speed downhill performances on Europe’s most difficult and dangerous slopes. They dominated the World Cup circuit in the late 1970s and early ‘80s. The first North American male to win an Olympic medal in downhill skiing, Podborski claimed bronze in the 1980 Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, NY. In 1982, he became the first and only non-European male to win a downhill World Cup title. The Toronto, Ontario native had an impressive 11-year career as a member of Canada’s alpine ski team. He was first named to the team in 1973 and made his World Cup debut in 1974 at age 17. He raced 89 times collecting 44 top-ten finishes, 20 of them on the podium. Podborski held a number one world ranking for two years claiming eight individual World Cup victories. He competed in two Olympics, was twice named Canada’s athlete of the year and was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1982. Since retiring in 1984, he was inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 1985, the Canadian Sport Hall of Fame in 1987 and the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame in 1988. Steve has worked as a television sport announcer for NBC and CBS and as an Executive Director for the successful bid for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games (he was also an assistant chef de mission) in Vancouver, BC. Presently, Steve sits on the boards of the Canadian Olympic Committee, the Canadian Snowsports Association, the Whistler Sport Legacy Society, Canadian Sport Centre Pacific, and the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation.
