2020-21 ATHLETIC REPORT

Board of Trustees Discussion Item May 25, 2021

Introduction

The TUHSD 2020-21 education-based athletic program consisted of up to 44 teams at each of our comprehensive schools for a total of 2,478 athletes (duplicated) participating on 119 teams. We also had 221 paid and volunteer coaches (22 on campus coaches).

Tamalpais Union High School District teams are members of the Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) in the North Coast Section (NCS) of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF). The CIF governs all high school interscholastic athletics in California.

Athletic administration and coaches continue to uphold the purpose of our Athletic Code of Conduct (AR6145.21) which is to promote the idea of healthy competition and to set standards of good sportsmanship for everyone involved. District schools, along with all other MCAL schools, subscribe to the tenets of Pursuing Victory with Honor.

Athletics is a learning situation where growth and maturity are expected to flourish and it is an experience that is intended to help our students develop poise and self-confidence, healthy and fair competition and many hours of hard work and enjoyment.

For the twelfth year, District athletics operated under the TUHSD Athletic Manual, most of which is available at the www.tamdistrict.org/athletics website. The Parent-Student Guide to Athletics and the Coaches’ Handbook are updated annually and reviewed by the Board whenever significant changes are made. In 2015-16, the handbooks were upgraded to NIAAA standards and approved by the Board in July, 2015. Only slight changes have been made since then.

The attached information is an overview of this year’s athletic program.

2020 - 21 ATHLETIC HIGHLIGHTS:

Off Season Training – In July 2020, we opened up the facilities for the TUHSD High School programs to begin summer conditioning camps. We set up systems to follow the Marin County Public Health Guidelines. These conditioning camps would continue until NCS/MCAL started the first season in January. Throughout the process we followed Marin County Public Health guidelines, worked with Marin Health Athletic Trainers, and adjusted as the guidelines changed.

MCAL Season – When the MCAL season officially opened we continued to follow Marin County Public Health guidelines for practices and games. The Athletic Directors were able to create practice and games schedules with facility constraints due to number of teams. We created guidelines for games and practices, communication systems to help keep families, athletes and coaches informed and safe.

Marin Health – Year two of the partnership with Marin Health. It has been a great relationship that has grown during the pandemic. They have been able to provide TUHSD with great resources and assistance. Throughout the pandemic we met weekly to discuss updates in guidelines and protocols.

Home Campus – All three schools transitioned to Home Campus for Scheduling and Coaches Clearance. This has been a great experience. Home campus has been helpful in training and providing assistance when needed. Having all three school on the same system has help with our goal of being unified. Year two we are adding the athlete registration portion of the web site. We will be switching from Register My Athlete. This will have all three aspects of athletics under one program.

Streaming Games – With the guidelines limiting the numbers of fans at many of the game locations we were able to set up streaming systems to allow parents and family members to watch games at home either live or recorded. This is an area that we will continue to work on and grow for the future. 2
