4. HOW MANY SIGNIFICANT TERRITORIES AND SPECIAL PROTECTION TERRITORIES (FOR BIRDS) IN ACCORDANCE WITH NATURA 2000 THERE ARE IN YOUR COUNTRY?

Currently in Latvia there are 336 ‘NATURA 2000’ objects; their total area is 11,9% of the territory of our coutry: •4 strict nature reserves, •4 national parks, •250 nature reserves, •37 open air parks, •9 protected landscape areas, • 9 nature monuments •23 microreserves.

4. HOW MANY SIGNIFICANT TERRITORIES AND SPECIAL PROTECTION TERRITORIES (FOR BIRDS) IN ACCORDANCE WITH NATURA 2000 THERE ARE IN YOUR COUNTRY? From the lists of protected species and habitats defined by the European Union ‘Birds or Biotopes Directives’ there are 20 plant, 20 invertebrate, 5 mammal, 3 reptile, 11 fish, 70 bird species and 60 different habitat types in Latvia. Their protection is obligatory in all European Union coutries.

In 2012 the building has got 1st place in the nomination Public Open Air Buildings in the competition organised by association of Latvian builders.

Several decades harmful substances have been polluting the surroundings of Olaine liquid hazardous waste dump, but finally remediation works have been done.

Getliņi ecological landfill is one of the largest and most modern producers of green energy and vegetables in the green houses heated by green energy used from recyclig the waste in Latvia.  Forests and rivers like the Daugava, the Gauja, the Venta form the most beautiful landscapes of Latvia.  Rocky landscapes by rivers are really attractive.

11. WHAT ECOSYSTEMS CAN YOU STUDY/WATCH IN YOUR SCHOOL GARDEN, NEARBY YOUR SCHOOL? WHICH WAY? Ufortunately our schol doesn’t have a garden, therefore we can observe only nearby nature. Mostly we observe forest, water, medow and swamp’s eco systems. We do it during project weeks, school trips, scientific research works and lessons.

Sometimes we study them in our science, biology, geography lessons or use the nearby environment in Art lessons for our paintings.
