Welcome to Old Elthamians RFC and our annual Foxbury Autumn Festival, here on the grounds of Eltham College.

The Foxbury Festival takes place early in the season, and we understand that it’s a rush for clubs to prepare their players as they step up into new age grade rules. Whether it’s a first festival with tag belts, first time tackling, moving into rucks and mauls or kicking like Owen Farrell, coaches have been busy lesson-planning, managers have been navigating GMS, and parents scratching their heads at how much our kids have grown over Summer, and suddenly a festival is upon us. At OEs Mini’s we believe fervently in helping young players to develop their rugby skills in an atmosphere of fun & friendship, to embrace competitiveness while respecting their fellow players. The RFU core values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and a Sporting conduct are central to our ethos, and we are proud to be hosting today’s event where all young players taking part are rugby champions. Today’s festival is run in the RFU Mixed Ability format and adhering to the Half Game rules, with its player- centred focus on enjoyment and development. We have a record number of teams today, with over 105 teams playing matches on a round-robin basis, so with fingers crossed for some sunshine it promises to be a fantastic day of rugby! There are many people to thank for making today’s festival what it is, without them we would not be able to put on this event. First and foremost a special mention to Mr. Leigh Cotterill, our Head of Festivals and Vice Chairman of Minis Rugby at Old Elthamians. Planning for today started 6 months ago and Leigh has been tireless in coordinating with clubs, suppliers, managers and more to make today the special event that it is. A special thank you also to Richard Wallbridge for providing the player photos in today’s programme and thanks to Jonathan Whymark for his wonderful match scheduling. Thanks to our team of Minis Managers who give up their time to liaise with parents and coaches, organise tours, and ensure that our teams run smoothly. To the coaches who instil their passion for rugby in our young players, always looking for new ways to mix up skills training and games and getting the players ready for today. Sincere thanks to the team at Eltham College for the continuously superb quality of pitches that we are fortunate enough to have access to today. To the army of volunteers who have given up their time to help with parking, pitch marshalling and managing stalls. But most of all to you, our future Maro Itoje, our potential Sarah Hunter, for dragging mum and dad out of bed every Sunday morning, for getting your boots on and your gumshield in, for stepping onto the pitch today, putting your arms around your team-mates and becoming champions. You’ve made us parents proud today and you deserve all the burgers and ice cream that you can get (by the way, mine’s a soft-serve with a flake!) We hope you all have a wonderful day today. Please make full use of the facilities and refreshments at your disposal, enjoy some quality rugby and cheer on all sides present. Warmest regards Paul Abbott, OERFC Chairman of Mini Rugby CODE OF CONDUCT THE GOOD PLAYER’S CODE

Young players should recognise that many people in Rugby Union are working to provide a safe and enjoyable game in which they can develop both as a player and as an individual. In Rugby Union young players are encouraged to: ·· Recognise and appreciate the efforts made by coaches, parents, match officials and administrators in providing them with the opportunity to play the game and enjoy the rugby environment ·· Understand the values of loyalty and commitment to adults and team-mates ·· Recognise that every young player has a right to expect their involvement in rugby to be safe and free from all types of abuse ·· Understand that if an individual or group of young players feel that they are not being treated in a manner that is acceptable, then they have a right to tell an adult either at the rugby club or outside the game In Rugby Union, as young players you should: ·· Play because you want to do so, not to please coaches or parents ·· Remember skills development, fun and enjoyment are the most important parts of the game ·· Be attentive at all training/coaching sessions ·· Work equally hard for yourself and your team and both will benefit ·· Recognise good play by ALL players on your team and by your opponents ·· Be a sportsman, win or lose ·· Play to the laws of the game and accept, without question, all the referee’s decisions ·· Control your emotions. Verbal or physical abuse of team-mates, opponents or match officials IS NOT ACCEPTABLE ·· Treat all players as you would like to be treated. Do not interfere with, bully or take unfair advantage of any player. Code of Conduct for Parents/Carers: ·· Encourage your child to learn the rules and play within them ·· Discourage unfair play and arguing with officials ·· Help your child to recognize good performance, not just results ·· Never force your child to take part in sport ·· Set a good example by recognizing fair play and applauding good performances by all ·· Publicly accept officals’ judgements ·· Use correct and proper language at all times Leigh Head of Festivals at Cotterill Old Elthamians RFC

From September 2015 the new Rules of Play were mandatory up to U11s in all clubs within Kent. This Festival is an all-inclusive mixed ability event based on those Directives.

The Rules of Play use a ‘building block’ This gradual introduction of new rules, approach and aim to equip players and coaches a simpler game, and a focus on growing with the skills they need as they build towards confidence and self-esteem will ensure that the XV-a-side game. They offer progression the development of each individual child goes and challenge for players season by season hand in hand with the development of the game and state the furthest players can travel through the age groups. This stepping stone towards the 15-a-side game at each age. This approach will equip players with the skills and ensures our game remains Player Centred and confidence they need to fully enjoy the XV-a- Development Driven. side game later in life.

The Principles of the rules are to:

1 Put the child first 2 Maintain rugby as a game for all shapes and sizes

3 Increase enjoyment for all

4 Increase involvement for all

5 Retain players in the game

The rules of the games have been simplified to support children’s development - they are deliberately uncomplicated and flexible. A free flowing and continuous game should be encouraged, and they offer core guidelines to the game, with enough flexibility for the coach to adapt to the needs and abilities of the players. The game has been developed to increase player involvement, increase the number of decisions a player has to make which in turn will improve their game understanding. More touches of the ball support their skill development, as they are involved more frequently during the game. All of which will increase their enjoyment of rugby and will assist with the long- term retention of players in the game. Good luck to all.
