Teresa Beall Expeditions presents Asian Sampler Platter A 12-night Adventure to KOREA - JAPAN - HONG KONG

October 23-November 4, 2019 / $3279 pp

This expedition begins in South Korea's capital city, SEOUL, a living, breathing mash up of history and modernity. Centuries-old courtyards hug the roots of brand-new high-rises and traditional teashops vie with Starbucks for customers. You will find this contrast everywhere: from the glitz and glamour of the Gangnam district to the grand, tranquil palaces of the Jongno area. The dynamic capital burgeons with inventive restaurants, galleries and boutiques. Having rebuilt after the Korean War and hosted the world for the 1988 Summer Olympics, Seoul has emerged as one of eastern Asia's most vibrant cities.

Next stop (reached by bullet train): BUSAN. The second largest city located in this mountainous country boasts one of the longest bridges in Asia (the Gwangan Bridge) stretching for almost two kilometers. You can see it from our hotel. The city also has the largest department store in the world. Very little English is spoken here, but the Korean people are known to go out of their way to welcome visitors. From here, you have the option to jet over to the nearby Jeju Island where the Yellow Sea meets the East China Sea -- this subtropical volcanic island is a perfect escape from the mainland. Although the island is loaded with top-notch resorts, museums, restaurants, cafes and even Loveland Amusement Park, the real beauty lies in exploring its natural bounty -- jagged coastlines, scenic roads, hidden white sand beaches, fields of rape flowers, the ever- towering presence of Mount Hallasan, lava-tube hiking, tea-plantation tasting, fresher-than-fresh seafood and watching the legendary Haenyo women divers.

Then we are off to the Japanese YAEYAMA ISLANDS, an archipelago located in the Okinawa Prefecture, south of mainland Japan, where pineapples and sugarcane grow. The Yaeyama’s include almost two dozen islands in total, most uninhabited, this is one of Japan's best diving and snorkeling spots with underwater coral reefs, dolphins, sea turtles and manta rays. We will stay on the largest of the inhabited islands from where we can ferry hop to the other islands to explore, relax and enjoy Japan's most beautiful beaches.

Grand Finale: HONG KONG. The name means "fragrant harbor" in Cantonese and it is a dynamic city of unique sights, sounds and smells. Home to approximately 6.8 million people in a 426-square-mile radius, it bustles with a mix of new and old, classic Asian heritage and the remnants of British rule. Hong Kong is known for its cosmopolitan vibe and high concrete buildings, but outside the urban hive you will find abundant, lush and breathtaking scenery. You will have a free day to catch the ferry over to Macau, if you want. While Hong Kong was a British colony, Macau belonged to the Portuguese. The differences are worth exploring.

We cannot wait to sample these beautiful Asian destinations with you. Annyeong -- ohayō gozaimasu -- ni hao!

Expedition Highlights

SEOUL GOOD WALKING TOURS / Oct 24 (10 am to 2 pm) / choice of two experiences This dynamic megacity traces its roots back to the days when it was a royal center for the five-century-long Joseon dynasty. In the 20th century, Seoul emerged as a world capital, catapulted by the country's explosive economic growth following the Korean War. Seoul is now famous for its futuristic architecture, K-Pop and culinary traditions.  Beyond Bibimbap (Food): Outside of K-Pop, Korea’s best-known and most beloved cultural export is its food. The tour will include sampling bites of traditional Korean food in an eating extravaganza, beginning at the renowned Gwangjang Market (the largest meokja golmok food alley in Seoul). Guided by a local culinary writer, chef or expert in Korean cuisine. Sink your teeth into the distinct flavors of Korean delicacies and local raw favorites: Mayak Kimbap (Korean sushi rolls) to Mandoo dumplings to live squid bibimbap (for adventurous foodies only!)  Confucianism to Buddhism (Temples-Faith-Culture): In addition to being a center for tradition and folklore, Korea is also home to a variety of interconnected religious practices. The tour looks at years of Korean thought, from Confucianism to modern Buddhism and Catholicism. In the company of a Korean religious scholar, you will visit a few important religious sites (Confucian Supreme Shrine, Jogyesa Temple, and Myeongdong Catholic Cathedral) and learn how they have overlapped/diverged through history. Wear comfortable walking shoes.

WAR & PEACE / Oct 25 (9 am to 5 pm) or Oct 25-26 (noon to noon, 24 hours) / choice of two experiences  DMZ: The World’s Most Dangerous Border: Private bus/walking tour with visits to Imgingak Peace Park, Freedom Bridge, US War Memorial and the 3rd Infiltration Tunnel plus a rare visit to a real Korean military outpost camp inside the DMZ (exclusively authorized by the Korean Government). Our expert guide will escort us along the infiltration route of the 31 North Korean commandos who invaded the backyard of Blue House to assassinate the South Korean president. Korean BBQ lunch is included.  (Optional) Overnight Temple Stay: Experiential Program: Overnight at the Jogyesa Temple, a Korean Buddhist Monastery, with included activities: temple tour, a traditional tea ceremony, chanting, lotus flower making (origami), Zen meditation, and the 108 prostrations all under the guidance of Buddhist monks. Uniform (vest and trousers) will be provided, but pack simple toiletries: comfortable shoes (no flips flops), warm clothes (nothing sleeveless) and socks. The program is designed to introduce participants to monastic life and to put them on a path to inner peace. Meals at the monastery. Transportation to/back from the temple will be on your own via subway line 1 (Jonggak exit) or line 3 (Anguk exit).

THE BEST OF BUSAN / Oct 27 (3-8 pm) Private bus/walking tour (two groups) with visits to the longest Gwangan Bridge, Gamcheon Culture Village, Jagalchi Market and BIFF Square. Street food samples are included, and other dinner items can be purchased at the last stop. Around 7:30 to 8:00 pm, the bus returns back to the hotel, or you can stay longer and return on your own by private transportation.

IRIOMOTE YOUR WAY (island adventures with lunch) / Oct 30 (7:30 am to 4-6 pm) / choice of three experiences Iriomote Island is largely undeveloped with nearly 90% of its land covered by dense jungles, mangrove forests, rivers and waterfalls. Wide areas of the island are part of the Iriomote Ishigaki National Park. All tours begin/end at the Ishigaki Port & Ferry Terminal (a 30-minute, 1-mile, sloped walk from our hotel). It is easily walkable, but you can hail a taxi if you plan ahead. Check-in begins at the terminal starting at 8:00 am, and ferry boat leaves at 8:30 am for Iriomote to begin your adventure.  Iriomote & Yuba Island Adventure (8 am to 6 pm): Cruise up the Urauchi River through the vast unspoiled jungle and mangrove plantations. Along the way, disembark for a forest walk to Mariyudu Falls (and an optional walk further to Kanpire Falls), plus a visit to Star Sand Beach and Yubu Island by way of carriage drawn by water buffalo. Lunch included.  Snorkeling on Barasu & Hatama Islands (8 am to 6 pm): Three different and unique snorkeling spots on Barasu Island (a small island off of Iriomote formed entirely of dead coral) and Hatoma Island. BBQ lunch included. Please wear your swimsuit under your clothes, and bring a towel, sunscreen and dry clothes. Snorkel and fins provided.  Heavy: Kayaking Nishida River & Trekking to Sangara Waterfall (8 am to 6 pm): Kayak through unspoiled mangrove forests on the Nishida River with a trek up to the Sangara Waterfall. Picnic lunch included. Wear your swimsuit under your clothes, and bring a towel, sunscreen and dry clothes.

STARGAZING / Oct 31 (5-8 pm or 8-11 pm) / choice of two experiences The Yaeyama islands are renowned for the quality of star and planetary observation because the islands sit close to the equator and Tropic of Cancer. The area also has favorable atmospheric conditions (free of jet streams) which provides an opportunity to view the Southern Cross as well as some 84 of the known 88 constellations, weather permitting.  Sunset Canoe Safari with Stargazing (5-8 pm): This sunset to dark kayaking trip takes place on the Miyara River (the longest on Ishigaki) which passes through dense mangrove forests filled with wildlife and a variety of plants. Gently self-paddle along the river watching the sunset and viewing nocturnal wildlife come to life as the skies turn to dark for stargazing. Wear appropriate clothing/footwear, and bring a towel and dry clothes just in case.  Stargazing After Dark (8-11 pm): The tour commences by boarding the bus at the ferry terminal for the drive out to Hoshizora Farm near Miyara Bay, which affords a very dark sky. Although the guide will speak about the various stars and planets in Japanese, we have hired an English interpreter. Telescope provided. After an hour of stargazing, the bus will return to the Ferry Terminal.

CHINESE JUNK SUNSET CRUISE (cocktails/dry snacks) / Nov 2 (5:30-7:30 pm) Much like the iconic skyline of Hong Kong and neon-lit streets, the Chinese junk boats have become recognizable symbols of the city. The Hong Kong Victoria Harbor was once filled with these glorious junk boats used throughout Asia for extensive ocean voyages. However, over the years, the number of junk boats in Chinese waters started to dwindle, one by one. Under the supervision of elder shipbuilders, local craftsmen have constructed a few replicas with traditional methods. In the local Cantonese language, the ships are known as Cheung Po Tsai, and were named after a Hong Kong pirate from the 19th century. We have privately chartered the Aqua Luna II, a modern junk ship based on these ancient Chinese sailing ships first used as seagoing vessels during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). The ship is mainly constructed from wood and bamboo and lacks even one single nail. Its construction was overseen by master craftsman Sifu Au, an 86-year-old shipwright who has built more wooden boats than anyone else in Hong Kong. It is 92 feet long with three trademark sails, but the sails are purely for decoration, as the boat is motorized. With two decks (an open-air deck with loungers upstairs, and a covered space with glass windows downstairs), it can accommodate up to 80 passengers in addition to the crew. Tonight, we have it all to ourselves (just the 35 of us and the crew) for a 45- minute private cruise. Relax in style in a comfy chair or on a lounge bed while you enjoy a cocktail or two and soak up the sights and sounds of Hong Kong's fantastic sunset scene as the skies turn to dark and the city lights begin to glimmer across the water. Our ship sets sail at 6:30 pm from Tsim Sha Tsui Public Pier. It is about a 30 minute walk from our hotel to the ship, so we will depart around 5:30 pm for a leisurely stroll and to time to take in the harbor and find the ship. Before retracing our steps back to the hotel, you can stick around for the harbor light show and/or grab a bite to eat, or not.

TBE SURPRISE: HONG KONG HUSTLE / Nov 3 (3-8 pm) No hints. No exceptions. Just roll with it.

Notes for Your Independent Plans

 In these countries, English is rarely spoken and most road signage will only be in Korean-Japanese-Chinese languages. When you leave the hotels, take the hotel’s business card (with name, address and phone printed in the local language). If you get lost, show the card to a taxi driver to be returned back to the hotel.  Install the app MAPS.ME for access to detailed offline maps of the world that work with iPhone, iPad, and Android. Be sure to download maps of the regions we are visiting before you leave home: Seoul, Busan, Ishigaki, Hong Kong. You can then use these free maps just like the GPS feature on your device when you are out and about in the streets - but you don't need WiFi or data. Just plug in the address of that cool bar you want to walk to, and BOOM: turn-by- turn directions that also show your current location!
