Anchor Books

Children’s tastes differ and their reading development may progress quickly from one stage to another, or they may spend more time at different stages than others. For these reasons we cannot tell you which books to use each day in your reading sessions. We can, however, give you some general guidelines to use when choosing books for your child’s current developmental level. In addition to these guidelines we have listed some books we like to call “anchor” books. These books can be found in libraries but also have been used in reading programs in classrooms. They have proven to be helpful for addressing the emerging literacy needs of young students. These anchor books also have been found to be among children’s all-time favorites and have “stood the test of time.” Even so, these certainly do not represent the only books you can use with your child at home. You can determine the approximate levels of the books available to you by comparing their distinguishing characteristics to those of the anchor books below.

Here are some important things to keep in mind when selecting books for your reading program:

• All children progress through the same levels of reading development, but do so at different rates. Your child will need to develop phonemic awareness, build pre-reading skills, and then progress to books that she can read as an emergent reader. • You should start at the first level and work up. With that being said, some children will quickly move from one level to another or linger at one stage longer than another. You will need to be sensitive to these steps in reading development and provide appropriate reading material at each level. • Interest and choice is a powerful motivator for readers. With your guidance, allow your child to give some input into the books you use at each level. Keep interest high by choosing stories or topics that significantly motivate your reader.

• Books may overlap levels. Use the levels as a guide, not as a hard and fast rule. • What may seem to be a difficult book for one child may be easier for another. Background knowledge about the subject and exposure to the unique vocabulary in the book all contribute to a child’s success with a book. • It is always important that the books you choose are within the child’s ability to read and yet provide some challenge. Books that are too easy will not help develop and sharpen reading skills (although the child should be reading easy books independently to help develop fluency), and books that are too difficult will create frustration and a dislike for reading. • The lists below represent only a fraction of the possibilities for books to use at each level. Talk to your librarian, teachers of young children, or your friends to discover other good options. • Check back often at teachachildtoread.net for updated lists. Emergent Readers (pre-k level) contain:

• minimal text • very large font • repetitive structure • familiar language • pictures dominate and tell the story

© New Learning Concepts, Inc. 199 Suggested Read-Aloud Books

Any book can be an enjoyable read-aloud for you and your child, but some books have proven to be classics and enjoyable for both the child and the reader. A good read-aloud should be a book in which your child can use his imagination and revel in the story. Some books are valuable to read aloud because they are funny, some because they tell a story that is worth hearing again and again, and some because they offer opportunities to talk with your child about themes or morals that are meaningful. Read- alouds can be picture books, predictable pattern books, alphabet books, series books, or chapter books. When you read predictable books or stories with rhyme and pattern, your child can begin to follow the patterns and join in the reading. When you read series books, your child can follow favorite characters in adventures. When you read novels your child is acquiring a rich vocabulary, learning to use his imagination, and building his ability to sustain attention. Below are some suggested books for read-aloud time to get you started. Pattern Books, Picture Books, and Poetry
