Carbery Beara GAA Games Development News 06/02/12

Physical Development Workshops

On Monday night last, the Physical Development series continued at Castletownbere CS, where a sizeable attendance was present for a coaching workshop hosted by development squads’ tutor, Liam O’Reilly (above). A number of Beara youth players ran through a series of exercises from the U14 programme, on a night which began and ended with discussion on appropriate physical coaching for 13-18 year- olds. However, there was also clear reference to the importance of fundamental movements for child players, as well as the windows of opportunity for speed development etc.

This series concludes on tonight, Monday night at Goleen, where the 40 participants at the West Carbery Award 1 Youth football course will attend. Indeed, this will be the fifth of six nights for the course which concludes in Bantry on Thursday night. Meanwhile, a second series of physical development workshops is scheduled for next month

Club Coaching Sessions

On Friday night last, an enthusiastic collection of U10 and U12 hurlers from Pedlars underage club assembled at the astroturf in Ahamilla for a coaching session. Here the focus was on a series of warm-ups, both with and without the ball, striking on the dominant side (running) and non-dominant side (walking), as well as games, where the emphasis was on bursting into space and striking on the run. This group will continue this programme for a further six weeks under the capable hands of coaching officer Stephen O’Leary and various club coaches. A similar programme is also running at various age levels at Ballinacarriga Community Centre and on the previous Friday night, we visited to observe a magnificent scene with all age levels being catered for in football and hurling.

Munster Club Nursery Programme

On the following morning, it was off to Bandon, where the Munster Council Club Nursery programme continued with a workshop for U12 mentors, players and parents. Here, we were joined by County Urban Coordinator John Neville (pictured above) and the two-hour session incorporated a SWOT analysis of club coaching structures, an indoor practical session on the grip and swing and finally a fundamental movement / hurling skills session at the magnificent wall ball facilities at the same venue. At the request of those present, a Foundation level coaching course will now follow for incoming club coaches, later this month and John will return at a future date for further club nursery sessions.

Meanwhile, on tonight Monday, he switches his attentions to Clonakilty where the first night of the host club’s nursery programme commences with a discussion forum for U8, U10 and U12 coaches.

Beara Foundation Courses

On today, Monday, a one-day Foundation course runs at Castletownbere CS for transition year students from 9-4pm, while on tonight a Foundation course for club coaches will run at Eyeries for Urhan GAA club This course concludes on the following Monday night. Thanks to local contacts, Kathleen Dwyer (TY coordinator) and Ciaran O’Sullivan (Urhan Juvenile Chairman) for their help in organising both courses.

Upcoming Foundation Courses On Saturday, February 18th a one-day Foundation Course will run at Kilbrittain and further courses will soon follow, throughout the latter half-of this month.
