Tour Summary Today was the first full day of the tour after meeting everyone the night before. We left our cosy lodge in the early hours of the morning and made the ninety-minute drive to the birding hotspot known as Zaagkuilsdrift Road. Nevertheless, we still saw Western Cattle Egrets, Blue Waxbills, a male Cardinal Woodpecker, Pearl-breasted Swallow, Black-winged Stilts, Pin-tailed Whydah, Red-billed Queleas, and a vocal White-throated Robin-Chat. As we continued along the road, we stopped for some Arrow-marked Babblers and then Southern Pied Babblers appeared, the stunning Crimson-breasted Shrike appeared too! Impala, Greater Kudu, Vervet Monkeys, a pair of Steenbok and a Black-backed Jackal. By midday, the temperature was around thirty-five degrees centigrade and did not look like it was going to get cool any time soon. We drove back along the Zaagkuilsdrift road, but there was minimal activity due to the high temperatures. On our way back to Johannesburg, we stopped at a fuel station where there was a small pond with green grass around the edges and we saw Southern Masked Weavers, Cape Wagtail, White-throated Swallows, and a Groundscraper . Once we arrived back at our lodge in Johannesburg, we got good looks at Karoo Thrush and Red-headed Finches. Today, we would make our way to the Kruger National Park. Finally, Michael spotted the male Taita Falcon sitting in a tree at the top of the cliff face and we had a brief scope view before it took off. We did manage to see the bird in flight and then after disappearing for a while, the bird did re-appear at the same tree for better longer looks. On the way back to the vehicle, we got a decent scope view of a Cinnamon-breasted Bunting too! We took a drive along the Zandvlei (Sand Estuary) in the hope of locating a Spotted Thick-knee and we eventually found one bird right next to the side of the road. After driving around False Bay, we finally arrived in Rooiels. It was quite windy too, but we were still optimistic about finding this special bird. During our search for the Cape Rockjumper, we came across a few birds such as Familiar Chat, Orange- breasted Sunbird, Cape Rock Thrush, Neddicky and Cape Buntings. As we arrived in a more sheltered spot, we could hear the Rockjumpers calling and after some searching, we finally spotted a male Cape Rockjumper! Further along, we got great looks at Karoo Lark and brief views of a Bokmakierie. We had a look at the estuary and saw that the tide was perfect so, we visited the Geelbek Hide and saw a good number of shorebirds ranging from Ruddy Turnstone to Bar-tailed Godwit, Curlew Sandpipers, Whimbrel, Sanderling, Common Greenshank, Little Stints, Pied Avocet, Black-winged Stilts and plenty of Greater and Lesser Flamingos. We continued our drive towards the Langebaan Gate managing to get great views of male and female Southern Black Korhaans, Black Harrier and Rock Kestrel. We visited one more hide and en route, we got a good look at Cape Penduline Tits busy completing the finals stages of their penduline-shaped Black-bellied Storm Petrel by Gareth Robbins nests with seeds from the Wild Rosemary bush growing along the path. From the hide, we saw a good number of White-fronted Plovers and a Caspian Tern. We headed back to the Geelbek Restaurant for lunch and along the way we watched a Black Harrier having a confrontation with a Yellow-billed Kite which was very interesting to see! The reptiles were also out in full force today as we saw Cape Angulated Tortoise, Cape Girdled and Cape Crag Lizards and a beautiful Puffadder right next to the side of the road! After lunch, we took the long journey to Ceres and picked up a couple of sightings of colourful male Southern Red Bishops, Blue Cranes, Capped Wheatear, Namaqua Doves, Pied Starlings, and a European Bee-eater. After some road works and heavy vehicles slowing us down, we finally arrived at our beautiful lodge in Ceres and had a relaxing afternoon and wonderful dinner! Our last full day took us into the Tankwa Karoo and thankfully it was not going to be a hot day, in fact, it was going to be a perfect day for birding! We started in Karoopoort where we got some decent looks at Namaqua Warbler. The temperature crept up slowly and as we drove through the Tankwa Karoo, we started to pick up a few new species such as the cute Rufous-eared Warbler, Yellow- bellied, and Karoo Eremomelas, Karoo Chats, Booted Eagle and two Ludwig’s Bustards! Our next was at a small wetland where we managed to see a Red-chested Flufftail and successfully track down a Cinnamon-breasted Warbler. Our next target was the Pririt Batis and a young male showed very well as it sat and sang from a tall Acacia Karoo Tree! We made a stop at the Tankwa Padstal (Farmstall) for Greater Flamingos by Gareth Robbins some Moer Koffie (nut coffee) and home-made ginger beer and then took a short drive and got a good look at a Tractrac Chat. We stopped for lunch in a nearby pass and here we, fortunately, got some

excellent views of a Canary. With some time on our side we took a quick break at the lodge and visited another pass and this time the weather was perfect and now we got fantastic close views of a Victorin’s Warbler. Our final evening of the tour ended with a delicious traditional oxtail stew dinner. We had one final bout of birding before we made our way to the airport, so at sunrise, we took a short, slow and relaxed drive on a farm road just outside the town of Ceres. We saw Bokmakieries singing Cape Penduline Tit and nest by Gareth Robbins in the sunshine and we watched Large- billed Larks performing a courtship right in the road and we also picked up one more new bird or the trip which was a displaying Cape Clapper Lark. After breakfast, we loaded up the tour vehicle for one last time and took a stress-free drive to the Cape Town International Airport where we said our goodbyes, hoping to meet again on another eventful tour!
