Louis Hirschel’s List of Unique and Rare Items from the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana

F.J. Hoogewoud ‘One evening’, wrote Herman de la Fontaine Verwey, librarian of the Am- sterdam University Library since November 1941, he and Louis Hirschel, since late November 1940 offi cially dismissed as curator of the Bibliothe- ca Rosenthaliana, sat down together to agree ‘which manuscripts, incunables and books would be secreted away’.1 The lists of items that were hid- den in the municipal shelter have survived, one stating call numbers and titles in Hirschel’s handwriting and another containing a shelf list of the items selected in the handwriting of his assistant, M.S. Hillesum, his pre- decessor’s son.2 At fi rst, the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana collection was confi ned, as stip- ulated in 1880, to the reading room and an annex in the attic. A major reno- vation of the library building in 1925, while improving fi re prevention fa- cilities, nevertheless left the Rosenthaliana with a smaller reading room, so that stacks were subsequently used, both of which were therefore included in the lists.3 Hirschel divided the rare and costly items for storage into three crates. The fi rst group consisted of mainly Hebrew, Yiddish and other manuscripts (c. 1300-nineteenth century); the second comprised mainly printed books, all Hebrew incunabula, post-incunabula, seventeenth-nineteenth century Judaica and Hebraica printed in the Low Countries (es pecially Menasseh ben Israel); the third contained supplements to the fi rst two, mainly Dutch Judaica and Hebraica, and items relating to Rosenthal himself. Most of the manuscripts were indicated only by call number, while Hirschel added a brief title beside printed works and in some cases pro- vided the reason for their inclusion (e.g. silk or parchment print). The methodical way Hirschel prepared his selection is evident from the list, as can be seen in the way the original categories have been re- tained.4 It is clear how the criterion of the uniqueness of manuscripts and rarity of printed works was applied. In deciding which items to choose Hirschel may also have been guided by the selections made for the ex- hibitions in 1919, which included a section of parchment prints,5 in 1927

The manuscript section therefore included highlights of the collection that had already attracted public interest, such as Or Zaru‘a (c. 1300),8 a seventeenth-century drawing of Spinoza,9 an unpublished halakhic work by the chief rabbi of Groningen,10 and from the reading room showcase, the well-known Leipnik Haggadah11 (presumably the ‘Haggadah from the showcase’) and R. Moses Isserles’ Responsa in a special binding showing the Aqedah at the front of the binding and Jacob’s Dream at the back.12 Hirschel may also have been guided by the priorities of his predeces- sor Hillesum, such as an eighteenth-century manuscript about the arrival of the ﬁ rst Marranos in Amsterdam by Uri Halevi13 or the old Yiddish al- manacs14 and what he himself considered important, such as the Hebrew translation of Dionysius Cato’s Disticha, with commentary, by Jacob ben Michael Weyl (Nijmegen 1792).15 And of course, the items Hirschel himself had purchased, such as the collection of ﬁ fteenth-century Hebrew responsa,16 a sixteenth-century Venetian print17 and an eighteenth-century festival prayerbook for Sukkoth, according to the Avignon rite.18 Care was also taken to include the items relating to Leeser Rosenthal himself (his own manuscripts and a handwritten biography of Rosenthal by David Freund). Hillesum’s shelf list includes four items not listed by Hirschel: Ros. 4 A 26, Ros. 19 D 7, Ros. 19 F 1 and Ros. 20 D 12. These are indicated with an asterisk.19
