Pope Francis’s recent social follows a long line of papal social , most notably: by Pope Benedict XVI, Sollecitudo rei socialis and by Pope St. John Paul II, by Pope St. Paul VI, by Pope St. John XXIII, by Pope Pius XI, by Pope Leo XIII and Charitas by Pope Pius VI. Not to mention the pastoral constitution on the Church in the Modern of the . In each of these magisterial documents of the , the Church speaks to the world and expresses itself in the public forum.

In the United States, since Thomas Jefferson’s Letter to the Danbury Baptist Church in 1802, there has been the notion of a separation of Church and State, which means that there is no official Church (or Religion) of the United States of America and that the State cannot get overly entangled in the affairs of the Church. Furthermore, in light of Article 6 of the United States Constitution, there is no religious test that can be administered in order for one to qualify for office or a public trust. The First Amendment never speaks of a “from” religion. So, does the Church have a right to express its voice in the public forum?

The word “politics” comes from the Greek polis meaning city and polites meaning citizens or people. Thus, politics means: “the activities and arrangement of the city and its people”. It is for this reason that politics is considered the highest form of moral , because it applies the good and the just to the structures and activities of the people. Hence, the Church certainly has an important, if not vital, role in the formation of the societal conscience that governs people. It is, indeed, the role of the Church as shepherd to teach and guide people to and this involves the public proclamation of the Gospel.

The Church is non-partisan. The Church grounds its teachings concerning humanity (anthropology) in our common, fundamental, intrinsic human dignity. Thus, in light of Gaudium et spes 22 – 27, the Church makes clear the dignity, value and preciousness of all human life and opposes anything that violates that dignity. This has direct implications concerning family and sexual ethics, medical ethics, crime and punishment, just theory, economic activity and business ethics, political and societal structures, and our common fundamental human and natural rights. In all these issues the point of reference is human dignity and justice. And, the Church legitimately has a great deal to say concerning the natural law, the dignity of human life, our preferential care for the poor and the sick, the and the structuralization and legal protections that provide for justice and human dignity which are moral issues concerning the polis and it’s polite.

The anthropological foundation of human dignity led Pope Leo XIII to address the issue of an authentically Christian economic structure for a society due to the burgeoning violence of the communist revolution which totally destroy the notion of individual human dignity, denies the existence of the transcendent and undermines the family as the foundation of a human society; a rise in socialism which undermines subsidiarity and diminishes individual human dignity and rights in favor of the collective; and the faulty placing of individual human worth upon one’s ability to produce for a society such as in capitalism which, when unfettered, such laissez-faire capitalism denigrates intrinsic individual human dignity and fails to provide the structures needed to address the plight of the poor. Thus, in light of Rerum Novarum and Quadragesimo Anno the Catholic Church developed its own economic system: .

Distributism teaches that property ownership is a fundamental right and the means of production need to be widely spread rather than centralized under the control of the State (socialism), controlled by a few of the wealthiest in society (plutocracy), or by mega-corporations and multi-national corporations which force countries to offer the lowest of standards in order to attract them and then leave the local population unemployed and “raped” of their raw materials once a better offer arises from another nation or city. Distributism has subsidiarity and as their fundamental tenants. It is only a distributist economic system that is fully in line with . And, if this system were in place, we would find our societies far better served.

The Church has a great deal to offer the public forum. The voice of the Church has every right to be heard in our pluralistic society and is necessary to the formation of the social conscience. So, does the Church have a right to participate in politics – Absolutely. The Garden Of Grace Children’s Group
