Welcome to the 17th annual Atlanta Celebrates Photography Festival! ]
I’d like to share a quote that I think describes our general feeling toward photography. It is by Francis Hodgson, professor in the Culture of Photog- raphy at England’s University of Brighton. Mr. Hodgson is also photography critic for the Financial Times and former head of the photographs depart- ment at Sotheby’s.
“I still believe that photography is by far the most important medium of the latter part of the twentieth century—more important than prose and more important than cinema. No exaggeration. Photography is transna- tional; it’s transcultural. It is available to five-year-olds; it is available to professors of photography. It’s amazing how it is not a limited medium. No other medium equals it in its efficient transmission of powerful messages—certainly not prose. People are less literate than they were, but they are more literate in photographs than they used to be, and that is pretty powerful.” Amy Miller Photography continues to grow and amaze us. So does ACP. Thanks to Executive Director, ACP your support, we now have a staff of four (unprecedented!), a new office, and an ambitious five-year business plan that aims to realize our potential to generate cultural tourism to metro Atlanta and raise awareness of this city’s photo-loving, experience-loving culture. More than ever, it seems, you are ready to receive photography’s “transmission of powerful messages,” and we are ready to deliver! t 5 ]
Lynsey Addario
FEATURED PHOTOJOURNALIST CAPTURES PAINFUL REALITY OF WAR-TORN REGIONS LYNSEY ADDARIO ADDARIO LYNSEY [ Lynsey Addario is undoubtedly one of the most notable photojournalists in the world. In 2009, she won a MacArthur Foundation “genius grant,” and in 2015, American Photo Maga- zine named her one of the five most influential photojournalists of the past 25 years. The Connecticut–born photographer has shot in conflict zones such as Darfur, Iraq, Afghani- stan, Libya, Lebanon, Congo, and most recently, on assignment in Syria. Her work has been featured in major national publications, including the New York Times, National Geo- graphic, and Time. She’s the author of an autobiography, It’s What I Do: A Photographer’s Life of Love and War. t And if Hollywood’s plans pan out, the

by Steven Spielberg and starring actress-of-the-moment Jennifer Lawrence, will soon make it to the silver screen. Addario is, by any mea- sure, an important photographer and ] journalist, but even so, as a female photojournalist working in war-torn regions, she’s a rarity among her peers. Yet, that distinction has lent her a critical perspective: She has been an unflagging chronicler of human rights issues, especially those affecting women. Addario calls her- self “a messenger of experiences,” and she has talked about a sense of mission in documenting the special horrors that befall women in war zones and in cultures where their lives aren’t val- ued, from rape © LYNSEY ADDARIO in the Congo to pressure to be successful in com- ing Muammar el-Qaddafi’s waning religious-based municating their trauma,” Addario days in Libya were kidnapped by oppression in told Time magazine. The Buck Stops Here
FOR NEW PHOTOGRAPHY COLLECTORS, TURK AND TOWNSEND TOWNSEND AND TURK
[ PASSION IS THE BEST INVESTMENT
You don’t need an art adviser or a bottomless bank account to buy photography. Atlanta collectors Gregor Turk and Murphy Townsend know a passion for the art form does the trick. The pair, a visual artist and a physician respectively, collect the work of regionally and interna- tionally known artists, often displaying their finds in their Ansley Park home. Local names such as Stephanie Dowda, Todd Murphy, Angela West, and Peter Bahouth mingle with those of Diane Arbus, Vik Muniz, and Sylvia Plachy. Some of the pieces are on permanent display, but others rotate in and out of view. Building a collection like this one isn’t easy—a truth to which both Turk and Townsend can attest. They’ve been collecting long enough to know the pitfalls beginning t collectors face, and they warn against their own early mis- 8 [ TURK AND TOWNSEND
takes: Don’t succumb to impulse buys or the lure of large-scale prints, which can be difficult to maintain, they say. “I wouldn’t start collecting for investment,” Townsend says. Instead, collect because you love a work or photographer, or as Turk puts ] it, because “you’re compelled by a particular image or series.” Turk and Townsend recommend new collec- tors find out what they really like by seeing as much work as they can: Visit local museums and photography galleries, talk to gallerists (“Let them educate you,” Townsend says), and attend auctions and artist lectures. Magazines, books, and reviews help, too, as well as visiting other people’s collections to gain insight into their approach. And of course, drink in as much as you can of the lectures, exhibitions, and events surrounding Atlanta Cel- ebrates Photography. The more you see, the more you will “get a sense of t what fires you up,” Townsend says. 9 ]

SCHOOL’S OUT SCHOOL’S HONE PHOTOGRAPHY SKILLS WITHOUT PURSUING A DEGREE [
You love photography and want to explore it in greater selections, like the mobile phone photography and video depth, but a bachelor’s or master’s degree is not in your class for students 16 and older. “Students say they cannot plans. Fortunately, the Atlanta area offers numerous believe how much they learn in a short period of time and classes and programs to help you broaden your photo skills without pursuing higher education. Better still, many area programs emphasize learning new techniques, skill building, and networking instead of grades, allowing aspiring photographers to focus on what they really want to do: perfect their craft. Jan Fields, director of the Showcase School of Photog- raphy, says her program does just that. An easy, afford- able community education resource, Showcase offers day, evening, and weekend photography classes and a “non-pressure way to explore the art and craft of pho- tography and video.” No degrees. No tests. Students can opt to take more traditional classes such as composition t and portraiture, or they can make more contemporary 10 [ SCHOOL’S OUT

The group offers both juried and non-juried for photographers.” exhibition opportunities, and its critiques, Lilly says, are a great chance to network with fellow photographers. The Roswell Photographic Society is a good option if you’re on a tight budget: The group meets twice a month, and its meetings are free and open to the public. Members enter monthly critiques, and a guest judge reviews their entries. Then, at the second meeting, they attend a lecture. President Gittel Price says speakers cover everything from shooting images with natural light to wedding photography. In addition, the group offers numerous exhibition opportunities and beginning-to- advanced classes for children and adults. For the full photo shop experience, try the Photog- raphers Studio in the TULA Art Center. Director John Mason says the studio “provides affordable studio and classroom space, as well as printing, film scanning, pho- t 11 ] DATE VENUE EVENT ACP # DATE VENUE EVENT ACP #
